Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boys from all over the country enter a race where if you win you get anything in the world you want. The losers get a bullet in the head.

Answer: The Long Walk

"The Long Walk" was published under the nom-de-plum Richard Bachman in 1979. One of his best ever, in my opinion.
2. Power Ranger-like action figures come to life and toast a small town.

Answer: The Regulators

The most recent of the books written as Bachman, this one was published in 1996.
3. Men compete on a gameshow where the winner gets rich, the loser gets dead.

Answer: The Running Man

Also by Bachman... this one was made into an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie with Richard Dawson as the gameshow host.
4. A lawyer who runs over a gypsy woman fights to get a curse lifted from him.

Answer: Thinner

This was made into a movie in 1996; it was also written as Bachman.
5. A youngster brings a gun to school, shoots several people.

Answer: Rage

Almost too prophetic, this book was originally published in 1977. He published it as Richard Bachman.
6. A man barricades himself in his house after he learns of impending highway construction.

Answer: Roadwork

The other book by Bachman (the others are the first five questions). Published in 1981.
7. A girl's beloved pet comes back to life, prompting a distraught husband to try and resurrect his dead child.

Answer: Pet Sematary

Kinda creepy... one of the many King stories turned into fodder for the silver screen. And, yes... Stephen King spells Cemetery that way.
8. A young lad's car takes care of the local bullies troubling him.

Answer: Christine

Yep... Christine is the name of the car. One of King's early classics.
9. A sleepy New England town is terrorized by vampires.

Answer: 'Salem's Lot

This book, one of Kings first made into a movie, is actually a follow-up (a prequel) to one of his short stories, "Jerusalem's Lot". Hence the apostrophe in front of the title.
10. The patriarch of a family goes quite mad while serving as caretaker of a hotel with an unpleasant history.

Answer: The Shining

This is one of the more famous books. Made into the movie starring Jack Nicholson (which, by the way, King said he never liked the adaptation of).
11. A writer with a tumor on the brain runs afoul of a nemesis who was closer to himself than he could have ever imagined.

Answer: The Dark Half

The nemesis mentioned in the question was actually the writer himself. A wild ride, this book.
12. After a virus wipes out most of the world, those immune begin rebuilding and separate into 'good' and 'evil' factions.

Answer: The Stand

One of King's longest books, it was later released as an even longer unabridged version. Yikes! References to this book have shown up in many of King's subsequent novels and short stories. Not recommended reading for those with a short attention span.
13. Vacationers wind up in a dusty western town where the sheriff proves to be quite a menacing problem.

Answer: Desperation

This one was released simultaneously with "The Regulators", the most recent of the Bachman tales.
14. A band of boys race against another, older band to 'see the dead kid'.

Answer: The Body

From the collection, "Different Seasons", this tale was later made into the hugely successful movie, "Stand by Me." What a great ride.
15. A Gun-slinging hero and his band of misfits continue to pursue 'The Man in Black', finally taking a trip on a 'crazy train'.

Answer: The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands

The third part of King's "Gunslinger" series. Part IV picks up on the 'train' where Part III leaves off.
16. An innocent man is sent to prison and eventually makes his escape.

Answer: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption

This one was published in the collection of novellas called "Different Seasons". Everyone may know this as just "The Shawshank Redemption" because of the excellent (but slightly different) movie starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
17. Old man sees strange ribbons of light coming from everyone's head. He also sees strange bald men in white lab coats.

Answer: Insomnia

This was one of Steve's weirder ones. I never finished this one.
18. A creepy clown lives in the sewer and terrorizes youngsters in the town of Derry.

Answer: It

Yep.. the one made into a T.V. mini-series starring 'John-boy' from "The Waltons".
19. Writer has a bad day on the road, ends up in the care of a crazy woman who is his 'number one fan'.

Answer: Misery

This is the one made into the creepy movie starring James Caan and Kathy Bates. It took director Rob Reiner to FINALLY do a King story right on the big screen.
20. And one last plot, just to see if you've been paying attention. A woman struggles to survive after being handcuffed to the bedposts during some sexual hijinks.

Answer: Gerald's Game

Bet you were wondering if I was ever gonna make this the actual answer... (Did you notice it was a choice in EVERY question?)
