Bayeux is not exactly a seaside resort but the little town where the famous Tapestry describing the Battle of Hastings can be seen. Proust was born at Auteuil (1871) and died in Paris (1922).

Answer: Michel Eyquem de Montaigne

Mauriac (1885-1970),born at Bordeaux, is the author of such works as 'The Frontenac Mystery'(1933), 'Vipers' Tangle'(1932), 'Therese' (1927 ), 'The Kiss to the Leper' (1922). In 1952 he won the Nobel Prize. Rostand(1868-1918) wrote 'Cyrano de Bergerac'.

He lived for a while at Cambo les Bains south of Bordeaux. Montesquieu wrote the 'Persian Letters' (1721) and the treatise 'The Spirit of Laws'. He was born at the Labrede Castle near Bordeaux (1689) and died in Paris (1755). He became Counsellor at the Parliament of Bordeaux and later its president. Montaigne was appointed mayor of Bordeaux by Henry III on 25th of November 1581.

By then he had already written the first series of his essays. In 1588 he wrote a second series. Three years after his death in 1592, a final series was published.

A quotation of his became the title of a popular French paperback series: 'Que Sais-Je?'(What do I actually know?)

Francoise Sagan published her first and most successful novel at the age of nineteen years in 1954, 'Bonjour Tristesse'.

She also wrote some plays one of which is entitled 'A Castle in Sweden'(1960).
