Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the title of the first story in this collection?

Answer: The Adventure of "The Western Star"

Miss Mary Marvell, a film star, visits our Belgian friend after receving letters suggesting that her diamond was going to be stolen.
2. What was the nationality of the man whom Miss Marvell said had delivered the notes warning of the theft of the diamond?

Answer: Chinese

There was, of course, no such person. Lady Yardly staged the robbery to hide the fact that she had given the original diamond to Gregory Rolf, a fact she feared would come to light when her husband wanted to sell the jewel.
3. What was "The Tradgedy at Marsdon Manor"?

Answer: The death of Mr Maltravers

Mr Maltravers was the victim, shot by his wife, Mrs Maltravers. Dr Ralph Bernard was the doctor attending the death who failed to notice that Mr Maltravers had been shot. Captain Black was a dinner guest of Mr and Mrs Maltravers whose story had given Mrs Maltravers the idea.
4. How cheap is the flat in "The Adventure of the Cheap Flat"?

Answer: Eighty pounds a year.

Hastings happens to mention this to Poirot, who decides to research the matter as he has no other crimes to work on at the time. And surprise, surprise, there is indeed criminal activity behind the price.
5. Why doesn't Poirot attend the murder scene in "The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge"?

Answer: He has 'flu.

He sends Hastings to investigate, insisting that Hastings report back to him fully each day and carry out any instructions he should have.
6. Another of Poirot's friends turns up in this story. Who?

Answer: Inspector Japp

Despite Poirot never attending the murder scene, it is he that realises the housekeeper and Mrs Havering are the same person.
7. Who was in charge of the bonds which disappear in "The Million Dollar Bond Robbery"?

Answer: Phillip Ridgeway

Poirot discovers Mr Ridgeway never actually had the bonds but was carrying a dummy packet. The real bonds had been sent on a different ship.
8. At the beginning of "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb", how many people associated with the tomb excavation are dead?

Answer: 3

As the story starts, we are told that Sir John Willard died of heart failure, Mr Bleibner died of acute blood poisoning, and Mr Bleibner's nephew has shot himself.
9. Where did "The Jewel Robbery" take place?

Answer: Grand Metropolitan

Poirot manages to retrieve Mrs Opalsen's pearls through using "the little grey cells".
10. Who is "The Kidnapped Prime Minister"?

Answer: David MacAdam

Refusing to go along with everyone else, Poirot chooses to hunt for the Prime Minister in England and he's right, naturally.
11. What was the profession of Mr Davenheim from "The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim"?

Answer: Banker

He's a senior partner of Davenheim and Salmon, Bankers and Financiers.
12. How many classes of disappearances are there according to Poirot (as stated in "The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim")?

Answer: 3

They are voluntary disappearance, "loss of memory" cases, and murder with successful body disposal. Davenheim turns out to belong to the first of these - he had disguised himself as a vagrant called Billy Kellet.
13. Which of the following foods was NOT ordered to Count Foscatini's apartment on the night of his death in "The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman"?

Answer: Borscht Soup

The actual soup ordered was Soup Julienne. The food was not ordered by Count Foscatini as he was already dead!
14. Who employs Poirot's services in "The Case of the Missing Will"?

Answer: Violet Marsh

Mr and Mrs Baker are the housekeepers, and Andrew Marsh is the deceased who has hidden his true will somewhere. If Violet can find the will, she will inherit everything.
15. Where is the will hidden?

Answer: On an envelope

Poirot holds the envelope near the fire and the writing appears.
