Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Hercule Poirot's secretary?

Answer: Felicity Lemon

Felicity Lemon is the ideal secretary to Hercule Poirot. She is efficient, tidy, and understanding, fitting in perfectly with Poirot's lifestyle. (Of course, because Poirot is obsessed with keeping things in order!)
2. Which Scotland Yard inspector frequently comes to Poirot for help?

Answer: Inspector Japp

Hastings describes Japp as "a little, sharp, dark, ferret-faced man" when he first meets him in 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles'. Poirot sometimes believes Japp to be a fool, but that isn't always so. It's just Poirot being arrogant and trash-talking other smarties to make himself look even smarter. Still, despite Poirot's banter, he and Japp have a good relationship throughout the books.
3. Which of these does NOT feature Hercule Poirot?

Answer: 'The Body in the Library'

'The Body in the Library' is also by Agatha Christie and features one of her other famous fictional detectives, Miss Jane Marple. Miss Jane Marple's friends, Mrs. and Colonel Bantry found a dead girl in their library, and asked sharp Miss Marple to find the murderer and clear their names.

In 'Halloween Party', a young girl named Joyce Reynolds is drowned at an "Eleven Plus" party that some local woman were hosting. Joyce claimed to have witnessed a murder and thus needed to be silenced before naming anyone. Ariadne Oliver was there at the party, and asked Hercule Poirot to investigate.

In 'The A.B.C. Murders', a homicidal maniac terrorizes the whole of London. But this murderer may not be so much of a maniac. He cleverly murders in alphabetical order, starting with Alice Ascher in Andover; then moving on to Betty Barnard in Bexhill; and last, Carmichael Clark in Churston. This murderer was clever, but he made one fatal mistake. He sent taunting letters to Hercule Poirot, thus instigating Poirot to take up the case.

In 'The Clocks', a dead man is found in the home of blind Millicent Pebmarsh by Sheila Webb. Colin Lamb had fallen in love with Sheila at first sight, so he agreed to get one of his Scotland Yard friends, Inspector Hardcastle, to investigate. Later, he also called in the help of Hercule Poirot.
4. Which is the last Hercule Poirot novel published by Agatha Christie?

Answer: 'Curtain'

In 'Curtain', Hercule Poirot dies of a heart attack after committing a murder he said was justified. He murdered a certain Mr. Norcom. Norcom was a murderer, and Poirot knew this, but he didn't have proof of it. So Poirot killed Norcom and then died himself the same night.

'Curtain' was first published in 1975, a year before Agatha Christie's own death in 1976.
5. Which of these novels features Ariadne Oliver, a friend of Hercule Poirot's?

Answer: 'Mrs. McGinty's Dead'

Ariadne Oliver is an author friend of Poirot's, and she has an addiction to apples. Mrs. Oliver is quite untidy in her personal habits. However, she is pure kindness and full of admiration for Poirot, and he feels the same way about her (please let it be clear that there are not, nor ever were, romantic feelings between them!). Ariadne often has bad luck when it comes to who the murderer is. For instance, she is often very good friends with the murderer, and it's always a blow to her when they are denounced criminal.

In 'Mrs. McGinty's Dead', this was the case. Robin Upward was to make one of her books into a play, and right in the middle of their preparation, Poirot named Robin the murderer. There is no need to say how disappointed Ariadne was.
6. In 'The Big Four', Hercule Poirot faked a twin brother. What was the name of this "twin brother"?

Answer: Achille

In order to defeat the enemies, Hercule shaved off his mustache and put belladonna in his eyes to slightly alter his appearance. He then lied to everyone that he was Achille Poirot, the twin of Hercule Poirot.
7. Which of Poirot's sidekicks, in which book, says, "I, the humble Watson, am going to hazard a deduction"?

Answer: Arthur Hastings in 'Dumb Witness'

Miss Emily Arundell had written a letter to Hercule Poirot stating that she thought one of her family members was trying to kill her. The letter had interested Poirot very much, and he made that fact obvious through his actions. Hastings said the quote above and then deduced that the letter greatly captivated Poirot's attention.
8. In which Hercule Poirot mystery does Linnet Doyle get murdered?

Answer: 'Death on the Nile'

Linnet Ridgeway was a society beauty and one of the richest girls in the world. She turned down a proposal of marriage from one of the most sought-after peers in England so that she could marry Simon Doyle. On their honeymoon (a cruise ship in Egypt), Linnet is mysteriously murdered, shot in the head. Colonel Race and Hercule Poirot, who happened to be on the cruise, take up the investigation.
9. Hercule Poirot married Countess Vera Rossakoff.

Answer: False

While Poirot certainly admired Vera Rossakoff, they never had romantic intercourse. In a few of the Poirot stories, Poirot mentions his respect (maybe more than respect!) and admiration (maybe stronger than admiration!) for Vera. In 'Curtain', Arthur Hastings says "Poirot likes women big, Russian, and flamboyant." Also, in 'The Big Four', Poirot and Hastings prepared to go on with life after wrapping up the case, and Poirot said maybe sometime he would like to get married.

In a short story 'The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding', Poirot gets the 'Bachelor's Button' in his pudding. A guest made a remark about Poirot being a bachelor forever, and Poirot answered that it was very likely he would never get married.

Nope, Hercule Poirot was born, lived, and died as a bachelor. Never married.
10. In 'The Murder on the Links', Arthur Hastings, Hercule Poirot's sidekick, meets his future wife.

Answer: True

Hastings meets Dulcie Duveen on a train, and they are attracted to each other at once. Dulcie's twin sister, Bella, turns out to be involved in the murder of Paul Renauld, which Hastings and Poirot are currently solving. Dulcie and Hastings do get married when the case is cleared up and Bella is proven innocent.
