Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Shadowdancers" is partly set in the land of Rargon, where acrobatic dancers known as 'Valourns' compete for prizes and glory. Pirimba, the heroine, becomes a Valourn and joins two boys named ShuMar and Fraeman to compete at the Cloudmount Valours. In which category do they compete?

Answer: The triad

There were three Valourns, and the word 'triad' is formed from 'triangle', meaning three. Fraeman and ShuMar act as the bases, or anchors of the triad, with Pirimba dancing the apex.
2. In "Kayak", twins named Luke and Mark Winwood are involved in a time travel adventure when Mark and his kayak disappear from the Bandinangi River. Mark is the noisier, more assertive twin, and he gives his kayak a name to match. What does Mark call his kayak?

Answer: Red Devil

Mark chooses 'Red Devil' as the name of his kayak and he has some frightening experiences in the future before he is able to rejoin his family. "Kayak" was published in the early 1990s, but it remains a favourite book with people who like a dash of conservation mixed with exciting adventure.
3. In the book "Trinity Street", the boy known as 'Gerhardt Watchman' uses several names. He is often called 'Daichcue Forn', which is a blurring of his real name, by his peers. What is his real name?

Answer: DHQ #49

Poor Gerhardt's real name looks more like a serial number than a name, and that's more or less what it is. It denotes the fact that he was genetically engineered from Donor Hi-Q (DNA taken from a person of higher than usual IQ) and that he is from Batch 49. No wonder he wanted something more interesting and called himself 'Gerhardt Watchman' when given an assignment seven centuries in his past.
4. Allyso Tormblood, the young heroine of "Candle Iron", must escape through the well-way when her home, the Castle Torm, is besieged. This escape is just one step in the terrifying adventure Allyso must undertake to save her home and her friends. What is the well-way?

Answer: A tunnel that leads down through the castle well.

The well-way is a tunnel supposedly made by Allyso's ancestor, Small Lord Torm. It plunges down through the well, and comes up again quite a distance from the castle, in a grove of stonewood trees. Allyso is the only person at the castle small enough to escape via this route.
5. In "Translations in Celadon", five teenagers are transported to another world where they 'become' characters based on their names. One of them becomes a wise-woman named White Lily Wisdom. What was this person's original name?

Answer: Suzanne Wise

Suzanne Wise's name 'translates' to White Lily Wisdom. The names 'Susannah', 'Susan' and 'Suzanne' mean 'white lily' and the surname 'Wise' means exactly what it says.
6. In "Knightfall" and "Knight Protector" there is a character who bops Simon on the head whenever she encounters him. Her name really suits her! Who is she?

Answer: She is Selina Sansclemency. 'Sans clemency' means 'without mercy'.

Selina Sansclemency doesn't really approve of Simon, the reluctant knight. Peggy the dragon does approve of him - as a snack. Humphrey Bookerstaff does rap Simon on the helmet now and again, but he is male, and the question specified female. As for Becca, she's more inclined to click than to bop. And that's really scary.
7. In "Wolfmaster", Dane Chancery was at a holiday camp when he was carried back through the centuries to Bronze Age England to befriend a character named Ulf. At first Dane was terrified of Ulf, but in the end they became inseparable. Who was Ulf?

Answer: Ulf was an outcast wolf.

Ulf the outcast wolf helped Dane to survive in the Bronze Age. When Dane returned home, Ulf was able to take on a new form and follow him. There were no tigers or robots in Bronze Age England, and 'Ulf' is an unlikely name for a girl.
8. In "Aurora", the heroine is an alien who was rescued from a crashed UFO. What caused the UFO to crash?

Answer: The Aurora Australis interfered with the navigation controls.

The Aurora Australis interfered with the UFO's controls and brought it down in the Australian bush. Luckily, young couple Polly and Keith happened to be passing, and they rescued the baby alien inside. They named her 'Aurora'. Why couldn't the other answers be equally true? The Borg belong to the Star Trek universe, and cannot be used by other authors without permission. UFOs are unlikely to run on petrol. And if the UFO had exploded, there wouldn't have been anyone left to rescue.
9. In "Amy Amaryllis", protagonist Amy Day invents a character who lives in a castle and who has a fancier version of her own name. She calls this character 'Amaryllis Loveday'. Meanwhile, Amaryllis Loveday invents a character who lives in a house and who has a simpler version of her own name. Who does Amaryllis invent?

Answer: Amy Day.

Yes, that's right; the girls invent one another. And because they do this at the same time, they are able to swap worlds. Modern day Aussie girl Amy finds herself caught up in a kidnapping plot in the strange land of Ankoor while castle girl Amaryllis has to deal with a nasty shoplifting gang in modern Australia. Ouch. And why did the answer have to be Amy Day? Well, the other three names all have something in common with Amaryllis's name, but they're not very simple.
10. Which genres does Sally Odgers usually write?

Answer: fantasy and science fiction.

Since most of the stories in the other questions were either fantasy or science fiction (no, make that *all* of them!) this one was a real no-brainer. I hope you enjoyed my quiz.
