Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are 60 stories in the canon. How many of the titles REFER to an animal of one type or another (NOT human)?

Answer: 4

"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" - it was a Swamp Adder.
"Silver Blaze" - the name of the horse.
"The Hound of the Baskervilles".
"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" - it was a sea creature.
2. "The curious incident of the dog in the night". A famous, and much loved quote from "Silver Blaze". But what animal was Holmes talking about, immediately BEFORE making it?

Answer: Sheep

"A long shot, Watson, a very long shot", Holmes said after he had asked the stable-lad about the sheep, but three sheep going lame underlined Holmes' theory that Straker would have practised making a slight nick on the tendons, before attempting it on Silver Blaze.
3. In "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger", what type of of animal ruined Mrs Ronder's features?

Answer: North African Lion

"Tell him I am the wife of Ronder's wild beast show. Say that, and give him the name Abbas Parva....That will bring him if he's the man I think he is."

"And it will, too," remarked Holmes.

And thus we found out about the very fine North African lion, called Sahara King.
4. Did Watson ever have a pet?

Answer: Yes, a bull pup

When Stamford introduces Watson to Holmes in "A Study in Scarlet", Watson says "I keep a bull pup". It is never mentioned again anywhere in the canon. "The half terrier, half lurcher" is how Watson describes Toby in "The Sign of Four".
5. From "The Adventure of The Speckled Band", complete this quote, "It is a nice household," he [Holmes] murmured. "That is the ...".

Answer: Baboon

Dr Grimseby Roylott kept a Cheetah as well as the baboon. Also, of course, he kept a snake, but this was not allowed to roam the grounds.
6. "Silver Blaze" is many people's favourite story, so here is another question from it. What was the name of the second favourite for the Wessex Cup?

Answer: Desborough

Lord Backwater's Desborough was kept at the Mapleton Stables and trained by Mr Silas Brown. Lord Singleford's Rasper is also from this story. Shoscombe Prince was another likely winner, but from a different story, "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place".
7. What was the first animal (NOT human) mentioned in the canon (earliest by date of publication)?

Answer: Pack horse

At the beginning of "A Study in Scarlet", we learn of Watson's Army career, during which he was wounded, and thrown across a pack horse by Murray, his orderly.
8. What was the first type of dog mentioned in "The Hound of The Baskervilles"?

Answer: Terrier

At the beginning of the book, Holmes and Watson are discussing a stick left by Dr James Mortimer. Holmes deduces that he has a dog, and says that it is "larger than a terrier and smaller than a mastiff". It turns out to be a curly haired spaniel - but Holmes mentions a terrier first.
9. In "The Crooked Man", what was Henry Wood's companion?

Answer: Mongoose

Watson suggests both a dog and a monkey. Holmes prefers "some creature of the weasel and stoat tribe". When they finally see it, it is Watson who exclaims "It's a mongoose". Mr Henry Wood says that "some call them ichneumon", but he called his Teddy.
10. It's a dog's life. Which of these animals did NOT meet their end at the hands of Holmes or Watson?

Answer: Fitzroy McPherson's Airedale Terrier

The pet of Fitzroy McPherson met the same end as his master in "The Adventure of The Lion's Mane". The "Hound" was shot first by Holmes and Watson, and a further 5 times by Holmes. Holmes also killed Mrs Hudson's terrier, with poison. Watson blew the brains out of the mastiff in "The Copper Beeches". Shooting dogs may seem a strange pasttime of such very English heroes!
