Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the ones who framed Edmond Dantes by writing and sending a letter filled with lies about him to the public prosecutor?

Answer: Danglars, Fernand and Caderousse

Ferdinand and Danglars sit at an inn and write the incriminating letter, while Caderousse, half-drunk, sits with them. He does nothing to stop them and therefore is also part of the conspiracy. The next day, at his own betrothal feast, Edmond is arrested...

Villefort, the public prosecutor, is just as guilty as the three who framed Dantes. He throws Dantes in prison simply because the letter from Napoleon was supposed to have been delivered to M. Nortier, Villefort's own father.
2. On what isle does Edmond land after finally fleeing the Chateau d'If?

Answer: Tiboulen

The closest isle to the Chateau d'If is Tiboulen, which Dantes barely reaches even though he's in excellent shape. The Chateau d'If was where Edmond was incarcerated after being tried by Villefort. Because of the charges against him, he is considered a political prisoner, and quite mad, and is quickly thrown into the dungeons.

There he meets the other 'crazed' prisoner and they become firm friends.
3. What is Danglars' position aboard the Pharaon?

Answer: Purser

Danglars is the purser, and not a very successful one, as Dantes has already noted irregularities in his entries. Edmond had planned on letting him go when he would be captain of the Pharaon, a dream that is sadly cut short. Later on in life, Danglars would become a banker, and his honesty would not improve despite the change in profession.
4. Which alias does Dantes use after he returns from his imprisonment?

Answer: all of these

Edmond becomes a master of disguise and uses each identity to get his revenge on the people who wronged him. He is sure that the divinity of his innocence will right all the wrongs, but his enemies fear him as though he's the devil himself.
5. To which family does the Monte Cristo fortune belong?

Answer: Spada

The Abbe Faria was a part of the Spada household when he found the parchment on which the location of the fortune was revealed. Because all of the meager belongings of the Spada household were bequeathed to Abbe Faria, the treasure was really rightfully his. Abbe Faria is eager to split the fortune with Edmond, after the long dark years that they spend together in the dungeons.
6. Who attempted to appeal to Napoleon to free Dantes?

Answer: Monsieur Morrel

When the Emperor returned to power, Monsieur Morrel tried to plead Edmond's case. Edmond, if you'll recall, had been thrown in prison for attempting to aid Napoleon's return to power, a lever that Monsieur Morrel thought would sway the emperor. Unfortunately, Napoleon fell from power quickly, and Dantes remained forgotten.
7. What is Edmond's father's first name?

Answer: Louis

Louis Dantes starves himself to death because of his broken heart while Edmond is imprisoned. Mercedes can do nothing but watch him waste away, a broken and bitter old man. He never gets to see his son again, and Edmond is broken to find out of the method of his father's demise.
8. Where do Albert and Monte Cristo first meet?

Answer: Rome

Albert and Franz were in town for the festival, and had trouble finding a carriage. Monte Cristo magically appeared and offered them places in his carriage. A coincidence? I think not! They had a jolly time at the festival, after which Albert was taken by Italian bandits and then rescued by Monte Cristo. After this show of friendship, Albert extends Monte Cristo an invitation to Paris.
9. Franz is about to marry whose daughter?

Answer: Villefort

Franz and Valentine's marriage is canceled because it turns out that Nortier was the one who assassinated Franz's father. It is a matter of honour, and Franz breaks off the wedding. This is to Valentine's delight, as her heart is promised to Maxmillien Morrel, a coupling that Monte Cristo cannot comprehend, but aids anyway.
10. What is the "mad priest's" real name?

Answer: Faria

He dreamt up the plan to unite Italy, and was imprisoned for it. In his cell he has treasures of all kinds, including a book that he has written in secret, part of which is in his own blood. The book was found years later by a jailer and sold to the Count.
11. How many years (to the day) is Edmond imprisoned in the Chateau d'If?

Answer: 14

When Jacopo pulls him out of the sea, he asks for the date, and learns that its been exactly 14 years since he got locked up.
12. What are the pills that Monte Cristo uses to induce sleep?

Answer: Hashish and opium

Its his fail-safe way to travel with minimum physical needs. He carried the pills in a hollowed out giant emerald, which he nonchalantly pulls out of his pocket when he is introduced into the Parisian society by Albert.
13. What book was Luigi Vampa reading when Franz and Monte Cristo came to free Albert?

Answer: Caesar's Commentaries

He says it's his favorite book. Luigi Vampa is very well learned, shattering the Frenchmen's opinions on Italian bandits. Luigi Vampa owes a debt to the Count, as do many of his bandits, a debt that Monte Cristo exacts in full.
14. How many large emeralds did Monte Cristo originally own?

Answer: 3

"One I traded for a woman's freedom, one I gave for a man's life, the third I had hollowed out..." - Monte Cristo's account on his three emeralds.

The hollowed out emerald houses his pills used for sleeping. The woman's freedom is Haydee's. The man's life is Peppino's, a bandit in Luigi Vampa's gang.
15. Fernand Mondego is the Count de _____?

Answer: Morcef

Fernand made himself a count after the Ali Pasha affair, where he made his fortune. It is a tainted fortune, as the Count de Morcef sold out Ali Pasha's household who he had vowed to defend. Although Albert is the Viscount, he renounces any connection to his father's name once he learns of his disgraceful actions.
16. Who does Monte Cristo duel with?

Answer: Nobody

He is challenged to a duel by Albert, but Albert comes to the battle field and apologises, and the duel is not fought. In some of the movie versions, Monte Cristo is depicted as fighting a duel with Fernand Mondego, but this is not true to the book.
17. What becomes of Albert?

Answer: he enlists in the army

After learning of his father's dishonour, and because he is of noble heart, he decided that the only way he can regain his honor is to join the army. He rides off to make his family name one he can live up to once again. This saddens Mercedes, as she is the last to see him go.
18. How much money does Danglars make off from Paris with?

Answer: 5 million francs

It's the money he owes to the hospitals that will make him bankrupt if he pays. He is later deprived of the money by the notorious Roman bandit, Luigi Vampa.
19. In the end, what becomes of Villefort?

Answer: goes insane

He goes insane and digs up the garden looking for the body of his supposedly dead illegitimate son.
20. Which couple remain in the end with the Monte Cristo fortune?

Answer: Valentine and Maxmillien

As Monte Cristo and Haydee sail off into the sunset, Valentine and Maxmillien read the letter bequeathing them the Monte Cristo fortune.
