There were three expeditions. The first one consisted of two men who were killed by a Martian. The second expedition were thought to be mad natives and killed. The third expedition was killed by the Martians who took the form of dead relatives of the crew. Only the fourth expedition found all the Martians dead and started to colonize the planet.

The time span throughout the book is 27 years. The first expedition arrives in 1999, and the last people of the Earth come in 2026.

Oxygen contained in atmosphere on Mars was lower and some people had problems with breathing at first. This is why one of the settlers decided that his mission was to plant trees, which were absent on Mars.
