Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three months after Dominion War's end, Jake Sisko finds himself working at the ruins of B'Hala on Bajor, attempting to cope with the loss of his father. There, a prylar named Istani Reyla presents him with an ancient prophecy. Who is the prophecy's title "Avatar"?

Answer: Kasidy's unborn child

The prophecy says that the First Son, Jake, would enter the wormhole and return with a "lost Herald," presumed by Jake to be his father, Benjamin Sisko. Then, the Avatar, Jake's unborn sibling, would arrive. After reading the prophecy, Jake purchases a ship from Quark and, unbeknownst to his friends and family, heads into the wormhole in the hopes of returning with his father. Meanwhile, Jake's stepmother, Kasidy Yates, awaits her husband's return and the birth of their baby, busying herself with the building of Ben's dream home in Bajor's Kendra Valley.

The "Avatar" duology was written by S.D. Perry and published in 2001, beginning the relaunch of the television series, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
2. When three rogue Jem'Hadar ships attack a virtually disabled DS9, the Defiant is the station's last defense. Crisis strikes the small ship's bridge, but Ezri, beginning to realize her potential as a Dax host, steps forward. What career decision does this prompt?

Answer: She transfers to command

After the Jem'Hadar destroy their protector ship, the USS Aldebaran, the crew of DS9 can only watch; the station is defenseless on its own, having been disabled for heavy maintenance. The semi-refitted Defiant's captain, Commander Tiris Jast, is killed during the attack; Ezri, drawing on Jadzia's experiences, takes command.

The Defiant finds a surprise ally in a battered Jem'Hadar ship emerging through the wormhole. This distraction and the Defiant's warhead module, a weapon designed for use in desperation only, saves the ship and the station.

It would be discovered later, however, that several visitors were able to beam onto the station.
3. While searching the Badlands for Breen along with the USS Enterprise, Commander Elias Vaughn makes a surprise discovery aboard an old Cardassian freighter that changes the course of his life. Which Orb of the Prophets does he here experience?

Answer: Orb of Memory

Commander Vaughn, most of his 100-plus years spent in service to Starfleet Intelligence, leads the away team to the derelict Cardassian freighter Kamal. There, they begin to experience flashbacks that leave them unable to concentrate. Vaughn discovers the cause, the Orb of Memory, and the experience leaves him profoundly affected.

The Enterprise returns the Orb to the Bajoran people; a grateful Colonel Kira Nerys, now commander of DS9, accepts it. Vaughn takes the position of executive officer of DS9, wanting to explore the youthful feelings and yens the Orb experience evoked.

He soon learns that he will be serving alongside his estranged daughter, Prynn Tenmei.
4. After giving the prophecy fragment to Jake, Istani brings the rest of the texts to DS9, where she hides them. However, the Vedek Assembly has deemed the prophecies heretical and she is killed for her efforts to preserve them. Who wrote these texts?

Answer: Ohalu

Security Chief Ro Laren finds the book and is stunned by what she reads in it, despite her agnosticism. Written millennia ago in an unusual style, the Ohalu prophecies are far more accurate than most of the accepted prophecies. The Vedek Assembly considers them dangerous because of the "heretical" view they present of the Prophets as teachers, not gods.

The Ohalu text also contains a shocking statement about the future: before the Avatar's birth and the dawn of a new era of peace, ten thousand Bajorans would have to be sacrificed. An Orb experience allows Kira to understand that the ten thousand were those who gave their life to protect the Ohalu writings throughout the centuries; Istani Reyla was the final one.
5. Kira, though uncertain as to her own feelings about the controversial prophecies, believes in the Bajoran people's strength of faith and ability to decide for themselves. Defying Vedek Yevir's orders, she uploads them for all to see; in retaliation, Kira is Attainted. What does this mean?

Answer: She cannot share in the Bajoran faith

The favorite for becoming Kai, Vedek Yevir Linjarin is a very spiritual, albeit narrow-minded man who was in the Bajoran militia until he was Touched by the Emissary, leading him to a life in religious service. He and some like-minded Vedeks were determined to keep the so-called heresy from reaching the population at any cost, including Istani's life. Kira's decision to upload the book and the subsequent Attainder imposed on her by Yevir costs her freedom of worship: she can no longer wear her earring, read prophecy, or set foot in the Bajoran temples.

The revealing of Ohalu's prophecies, the new religion based upon them (the Ohalavaru - Ohalu truthseekers), and Kira's undeserved Attainder cause religious schisms across Bajor.
6. After helping to save DS9 from a fellow Jem'Hadar, Taran'atar is welcomed aboard DS9. Odo has tasked him with observing life in the Alpha Quadrant, hoping to show that Jem'Hadar can be more than just soldiers. Why was Taran'atar chosen for this mission?

Answer: He is free from dependency on ketracel white

When Ensign ch'Thane senses a Jem'Hadar on the station and forces him to unshroud, the soldier claims Odo's mission for himself. Named Kitana'klan, he is one of several enemy Jem'Hadar attempting to destroy the station. Kitana'klan nearly completes his mission, but thanks to Taran'atar, who had previously remained shrouded, DS9's fusion core is ejected in time. Taran'atar had beamed aboard from the ship that aided DS9, and carries a message from Odo to prove his story. Odo explains in the message that Taran'atar, an Honored Elder of 22 years, was chosen due to his natural freedom from addiction to the white. Odo also relays a message from the Founders promising noninterference to explorers in the Gamma Quadrant, as long as Dominion territory is avoided.
7. Dr. Julian Bashir is again recruited by the agency known as Section 31, in "Abyss." A genetically enhanced doctor on planet Sindorin has grown his own army of Jem'Hadar soldiers, who are intended for release on the weakened quadrant. Who is this enhanced villain?

Answer: Ethan Locken

Dr. Ethan Locken believes himself to be another Khan Noonien Singh, destined to rebuild humanity in his own enhanced image. Initially an agent of the mysterious, unprincipled Section 31 himself, he had been sent to Sindorin to devise a way to use an abandoned Jem'Hadar hatchery in the Federation's favor. Locken, however, decided to use the inferior Jem'Hadar created here in his own, horrific service. Bashir, along with Ezri Dax, Ro, Taran'atar, and the local Ingavi, succeed in preventing the reign of terror planned by Locken, who is killed by his own soldiers.

"Section 31: Abyss" was authored by Jeffery Lang and David Weddle. It is followed by Keith R.A. DeCandido's "Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness," in which the ancient Iconian gateways resurface and wreak havoc on the galaxy.
8. Before leaving for the Gamma Quadrant, Ensign Thirishar ch'Thane (Shar) of Andor has to face a difficult obligation when his mother, Councillor zh'Thane, brings his betrothed to DS9. Which of the following is NOT true of Andorians in the "Mission Gamma" series?

Answer: Andorians are an entirely androgynous species

The four-gender, blue-skinned Andorian species faces extinction because of the difficulty involved in procreation, especially since a recent "biological holocaust." Shar was chosen to bond with Anichent, Dizhei, and Thriss in childhood; the quad has an obligation to produce a child, something that can only happen for five years of their lives. Shar, however, hopes to find a lasting solution instead of just prolonging the inevitable. By bringing his bondmates to DS9, his mother hopes to convince him to return to Andor for their shelthreth (marriage). Shar chooses his career and the Defiant's three-month voyage of exploration in the Gamma Quadrant instead, but promises to go to Andor when he returns - hopefully, before it's too late.

"Mission Gamma, Book One: Twilight" was written by David R. George III and begins the four-part "Mission Gamma" miniseries.
9. Quark's Bar is in a downward spiral financially, but the proprietor hopes his new dabo girl, an Orion named Treir, will boost business. Considering herself a partner in the establishment, she presumes to hire someone to fill what newly created position?

Answer: Dabo boy

Quark is thoroughly disgusted when the lovely, green, scantily clad Treir introduces her similarly dressed discovery, a Bajoran dabo boy named Hetik. In light of the recent downturn - and Treir's reluctant assurance that the paltry salary she promised Hetik will come out of her own check if things don't work out - Quark agrees to try out the "dabo boy" for a week. Sure enough, Hetik's presence brings in a new crowd of dabo players and female leerers. Meanwhile, Quark finds himself attracted to another of DS9's newcomers, Lieutenant Ro Laren, the replacement of his old friend Odo in the security department; the two forge a most unlikely friendship.
10. The Defiant's first stop in the Gamma Quadrant brings them to a world with a unique inhabitant that is causing destruction to other planets. The now-dead residents of the planet, not realizing the being's sentience, once used its "thoughtscape" to create virtual realities. What is it called?

Answer: Inamuri

On the beautiful world of the Vahni Vahltupali, disaster strikes when a devastating pulse destroys their moon. The pulse is traced to an eerily dead world, whose cities are filled with evidence of the citizens who abruptly perished centuries ago, the result of their virtual realities.

The Inamuri thoughtscape resides in another dimension, and its endeavors to emerge into the physical universe now produce the deadly pulse; Vaughn frees the creature, ending the pulse. Their experiences on the planet prove to be powerful for Commander Vaughn and his daughter, Prynn, who has never forgiven her father for the death of her mother; the two begin the difficult process of healing their relationship.
