Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If primogeniture was the only consideration when selecting the next Emperor at the beginning of the play, which of the following candidates would be the winning candidate?

Answer: Saturninus

The concept of primogeniture means the eldest born son would inherit the Emperorship. That would be Saturninus. Titus himself names Saturninus Emperor because of his primogeniture, even when his brother Marcus had obtained agreement from all factions that Titus should become Emperor.
2. In the first act, Marcus defends Bassianus' abduction of Lavinia by calling it a situation of 'suum cuique'. What does Marcus mean by that?

Answer: To each his own.

A basic translation of suum cuique is 'to each his own'. Marcus implies that since Bassianus and Lavinia were previously betrothed, Bassianus' abduction of Lavinia is a justifiable act to protect the wife betrothed to him. In fact, Marcus knows it is a weak defense, because Titus as head of the Andronici is acting within Roman custom. Titus can marry Lavinia to whomever he pleases.
3. Which of the following phrases does Saturninus use to describe Lavinia when he announces that he shall marry her?

Answer: Rome's royal mistress

The other three options are what Saturninus uses when describing Tamora later on in the first act.
4. Approximately how much time passes from the marriages at the end of Act One to Marcus' discovery of Lavinia in Act Two?

Answer: About 24 hours

Titus makes the offer the hunt at the end of Act One, and Act II Scene ii, the brief scene begins with Saturninus joking how Titus began the hunt too early for the newlyweds.
5. What object allows Martius to 'see' that the corpse he has discovered is that of Bassianus?

Answer: A ring

Martius falls into the pit and the reflection of the ring is how he claims to know that Bassianus is the slain victim.
6. Which of the following actions earns Chiron and Demetrius the descriptive phrase 'a craftier Tereus'?

Answer: Cutting off Lavinia's hands

Tereus in mythology deflowered Philomel and cut out her tongue so she couldn't tell anyone. Philomel, however, was able to knit a cloth which exposed Tereus' crime. By cutting of Lavinia's hands, Chiron and Demetrius becomes 'a craftier Tereus'. They do not kill Lavinia, even though Tamora expicitly tells them to do so.
7. Which of the following does Titus refer to as being 'more hard than stones'?

Answer: The Tribunes

He utters this about the tribunes as they escort Martius and Quintus to the place of execution.
8. When Lucius sees Lavinia the first time in Act Three, what does he refer to her as?

Answer: This object

Lucius can not face the fact that the Lavinia he is looking at his actually his sister, so objectifies her. He does better in his next line, which is 'Gentle Sister'.
9. Which of the following geographic features does Marcus refer to when he breaks down in grief in Act Three?

Answer: Mt. Etna

Now let hot Aetna cool in Sicily, And be my heart an ever-burning hell! (III.i.241-2)
10. What is the name of the midwife who helped delivered Aaron and Tamora's child?

Answer: Cornelia

The Nurse states this in IV.ii.141. Based on what happens to the Nurse five lines later, Cornelia has not much longer to live.
11. What goddess does Titus believe has fled the earth, thereby causing him to send letters to the gods?

Answer: Astraea

Astraea is the goddess of justice.
12. In Act IV, Titus instructs his kinsmen to shoot arrows into the heavens with messages to the gods. Which deity does Titus personally shoot his arrow to?

Answer: Mars

The God of War is a fitting choice for Titus' personal deity given his life has been spent as a warrior.
13. How was the Goth (2nd Goth in the script) able to discover Aaron and his child as he reports in Act V?

Answer: The Goth hears the baby crying.

He wasn't patrolling the monastery because he says he had strayed from the troops. Aaron did not attempt to steal the weapon. It was the baby's cry first that alerted the Goth. Only when he got closer to investigate does he hear Aaron.
14. Which character protrays 'Rapine' in the Act V visitation to Titus?

Answer: Chiron

I thought it was time for an easy question. Demetrius plays 'Murder', Tamora protrays 'Revenge'. Titus does not have a name during this section.
15. Which of the following crimes has Aaron NOT committed, according to his famous Act V speech?

Answer: Kill his own child

Aaron does not kill his first born child. Ironically, it is possibly the only good action Aaron does in his life, and it is the one that gets him captured and ultimately will lead to his death.
16. The full title of the play is 'The Most ___ Roman Tragedy of Titus Andronicus'. What word fills in the blank?

Answer: Lamentable

Famous and Honorable, though found in several of the full history and tragedy titles, does not appear in this play. Though some people may find the play revolting, it isn't in the title.
17. Which of the following characters can be most accurately described as being the eldest child of his parents?

Answer: Alarbus

The other three indeed have older brothers.
18. When describing Tamora, Queen of the Goths, which animal is often associated with her?

Answer: Tiger

The Wolf is a major symbol of Rome (think of Romulus and Remus). The Doe is associated with Lavinia. The Lion is often used to describe a king. Tamora is the 'ravenous tiger'.
19. Which of the following characters has no familial relationship to the Andronici?

Answer: Aemilus

Aemilius brings the news that the Goths plans to attack and is dispatched by Rome to Lucius in order to set up the dinner in Titus' house later. The other three names appear in Act IV and V.
20. Which of the following nondramatized events would occur latest in the play?

Answer: Lucius meets the Goths.

Lucius would have to have met the Goths after Act Three, Scene One. The marriages must occur before II.ii. The letter must be written before II.iii. and since we see Quintus and Martius in dumbshow being led to execution at the start of III.i., that leaves us with Lucius meeting the Goths being the latest event of the four.
