Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the story, who did Stephanie help to capture a man named Emilio Gardi?

Answer: Ranger

Gardi had skipped out on his court date in Dade County, down in Florida. He was facing racketeering charges, but decided to attend a dinner party in New Jersey. Stephanie and Ranger also attended this event, and Ranger nabbed Gardi. He tried to be civilized about it, but Gardi forced Ranger into a more brutal response.
2. Who was the high money FTA (failure to appear) that Stephanie had to collect in this book?

Answer: Jimmy Poletti

Jimmy was another notorious "business man" from the neighborhood. Jimmy owned car dealerships and apparently had been involved in some illegal activities with young girls down in Mexico. Steph and Lula visited Jimmy's wife Trudy, his daughter-in-law, his son Oswald and his mother. They had no luck. Speed Weed, McG and David Greenwalt are all TV producers, writers and directors.
3. How did Stephanie come to acquire the company of Randy Briggs?

Answer: He came to her door looking for a place to stay

Randy and Steph had encounters in the past, and she was none too fond of him. No one was too fond of him. He'd been Poletti's bookkeeper and was scared out of his mind after a rocket had been launched into his apartment. Steph was not thrilled to see him, but thought she might be able to use him as bait to lure Jimmy out of hiding. Unfortunately, she ended up having her own apartment rocket bombed while he was alone inside it. He lived and managed to save Rex as well. I believe Randy first appeared as a failure to appear in the novel "High Five".

Lula did go on a date with one of Vinnie's clients in this book, after which she helped Stephanie capture him.
4. Silvio Pepper owned a trucking company.

Answer: True

Pepper Trucking was a small long haul trucking company owned by a Poletti associate named Silvio Pepper. Pepper, age 63, told Steph he was convinced Jimmy was killing off associates of theirs "in the know" about his dirty dealings. Steph found it all too convenient and did not accept that Jimmy was necessarily whacking people.

She went off to try and talk to Silvio's wife Miriam. Miriam said all Silvio cared about was the company and that he had a contract with a salsa plant in Mexico and a container factory in Newark. That could possibly tie Jimmy and Silvio to a joint Mexico connection.

It turned out that Jimmy was not behind the murders of his associates.
5. A lower level skip Stephanie needed to bring in was Stanley Kulicky. How had she known him in her past?

Answer: From school

As far as I can recall back through the previous twenty books, Steph had never dated online or had a gym membership. She told Connie they'd gone to school together. He had skipped on his court date after being arrested for breaking into a diner and stealing rice pudding, then setting the diner on fire accidentally, and lastly ramming into a cop car in a getaway attempt.

When Steph and Lula located Stanley, he'd changed. No longer a skinny kid from school, they found a very overweight Stanley sitting nude on top of his mom's house.

He eventually fell off the roof and was taken away by ambulance. Lula later went on a date with him to see a movie that was alluded to be one of the "Transformer" films.
6. The Rangeman building was destroyed by an IED (improvised explosive device).

Answer: False

It was quarantined due to radiation exposure. The radiation was meant both as a hit on Ranger and a trial run for a bigger assassination. Gardi had been hired by an ancient enemy of Ranger's, and the container accidentally broke open ahead of schedule. Ranger was not in the building at the time of contamination, but one of his men was poisoned. Gardi was also exposed and later died. But, not before Stephanie was able to get information out of him. Gardi explained about being hired by a mysterious man with a skull and flower tattoo and a scar above his eye. Ranger immediately realized it was a Russian enemy from long ago.
7. Who took an investigative trip to New York?

Answer: Ranger and Stephanie

Before he died, Gardi told Stephanie that the mystery assassin had left the container of radiation for him inside a hotel room in New York. He'd delivered a cash payment to Gardi's creditors as well. The hotel, the Gatewell, was Ranger's only real lead back to Vlatko, his suspected enemy. So, he took Steph with him to New York to check it out.

While there, she had an encounter with the man, which would not be her last.
8. Was Grandma Mazur stalking Joe's Grandma Bella?

Answer: Yes

Bella was always trying to scare Stephanie away from her precious grandson. She'd been dealing with Bella for ages, but Bella's attempts at cursing Stephanie never seemed to pan out. So, when Joe asked Steph if her grandma was stalking his, Steph confirmed that "getting" Bella was on Grandma Mazur's bucket list. Grandma Mazur later confirmed that she was stalking Bella and freaking her out.

She even pied Bella in the face!
9. What body part did Stephanie find on the counter in Morelli's kitchen?

Answer: Heart

She was alone in his house and went upstairs. When she came back down, she found what was later ascertained to be a human heart. While she, Morelli and Ranger discussed the situation about the dangerous Russian, Bob the dog took the opportunity to devour the evidence. Bob was always eating everything. Ranger and Stephanie later discovered the owner of the heart inside a bag in the Russian's hotel room.
10. Who did Stephanie and Briggs discover to be behind the rocket bombings of both of their apartments?

Answer: Oswald Poletti

Oswald, son of Jimmy Poletti, told Briggs and Steph that he bombed both of their apartments and Ranger's Porsche all in an attempt to kill Briggs. He was doing it for Miriam Pepper, who said that Briggs knew all about the business in Mexico and would ruin their fun. Briggs assured Oswald he had no intention of bothering Miriam and that was the end of it.

Cosima and Sarah are characters from the TV series "Orphan Black", and both played by actress Tatiana Maslany. She's actually played many clones with unique personalities on that series.
