Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the chapter entitled "Things That Make No Sense", who walks up to Marcus and Miranda and attempts to explain the concept of time travel to her?

Answer: Julia

The following text is taken from shortly after Julia butts her way into the conversation:

'"Think of it like this," Marcus said, oblivious to the look she was giving us. "Time isn't a line stretching out in front of us, going in one direction. It's--well--time is just a construct actually--" "Look," Julia said, cutting him off... She pulled off one of her gloves--they were these beautiful, fuzzy, pale yellow gloves--and she yanked a ring from her finger. "I think of it like this," she said, holding up the ring.'

More specifically, a diamond ring. Julia compares time to each "chip," telling Miranda to "pretend the ring is really big, with diamonds all around, and each diamond is one moment." But she still doesn't get it.
2. In the chapter entitled "The First Proof", Miranda searches Colin's knapsack around 3 P.M.

Answer: True

The lunchtime hour finds her counting bread rolls and discovering there are two missing. Her boss, Jimmy, thinks the company that delivers them shortchanged him, when in actuality Colin swiped the rolls and hid them in his knapsack.

"The First Proof" alludes to the note that Miranda has found in her coat pocket, which tells her that she should look in Colin's knapsack. This is supposedly where she will find her "first proof" that the writer of the notes she's getting is telling the truth. These messages are warning her that she has to help save someone's life *before* there's any indication of danger!
3. In "Things You Give Away", when Miranda goes to Annemarie's house after school, what does Annemarie's father prepare for the girls to snack on?

Answer: Almonds

He heats up the container in some way.

He also offers Miranda some noodles with sesame sauce, but she politely declines. She does, however, accept a glass of lemonade. Annemarie, on the other hand, drinks a bottle of water, given her special diet.
4. Miranda's upset that Richard wants to marry her mother.

Answer: False

For a split second, she's surprised by the news--but then "I got this feeling of ... lightness."

Miranda's mother admits that she's afraid of making another mistake. She loves Richard, but isn't sure whether marrying him is the right choice. She doesn't want to do anything that might end up hurting her daughter.

This is in the chapter entitled "Things That Get Stuck."
5. In "Tied-Up Things", who sleeps over at Miranda's house?

Answer: Annemarie

Her father drops her off, and packs a box full of snacks, which he ties shut "with purple and green curly ribbon, like Christmas presents."

Sal used to sleep over at Miranda's when they were younger, but he never stayed the whole time.
6. In "Things That Turn Pink", Annemarie, Colin and Miranda are fired from work. Why?

Answer: Jimmy thinks they stole from him

When the three young people reach Jimmy's, he tells them gruffly to go away, and closes the door in their face. Only Colin thinks he's playing a prank or joking around.

At first, Jimmy won't even tell them why he's fired them. But he eventually relents and states his opinion that one of them stole his Fred Flintstone bank.

Annemarie suggests sending a card to their former boss, explaining that they didn't do it, and asking politely for their jobs back.
7. Which of the following does *not* happen in the chapter titled "Things That Fall Apart"?

Answer: Miranda gets a bad grade on an assignment

No particular class is mentioned in this chapter.

At the time they normally work, Annemarie, Colin and Miranda walk over to Jimmy's. Their former boss is loath at first to let them in, but eventually he relents because "you're good kids". However, he does have one condition to giving them their jobs back: that thieving little girl, Julia, is henceforth banned from his shop.

After a tense conversation, Annemarie storms out of the store, followed by her fellow schoolmates. Colin doesn't understand, so Annemarie explains that "he thinks Julia did it because she's black."

Unfortunately, Miranda gets to feel some of Annemarie's wrath because the name Jimmy called Julia was one that Miranda came up with. In her case, though, she wasn't talking about race - instead, she was alluding to the fact that Julia talks nonstop about vacations that she's been on (including Switzerland) and the expensive gifts her father buys her (including a watch).

That's why, in the end of the chapter, Miranda and Colin go for pizza without Annemarie.
8. Which of the following Christmas gifts did Miranda receive?

Answer: Bracelet

She also got a journal, a sweater, a tin of cookies, a radio, and a book.

The earrings and nail polish were gifts Miranda bought her mother, along with a pair of tights.

The pen, for Richard, is also from Miranda.

All these gifts are discussed in the chapter entitled "The Second Proof".
9. In "Things in an Elevator", Miranda finds that she and Annemarie are still friends.

Answer: True

It's New Year's Day, and the two girls haven't spoken for about ten days. Miranda decides to call Annemarie from a pay phone, and winds up being invited over by her father. When she gets there, Miranda's both surprised and pleased to learn that the other girl still considers her a friend, and realizes the whole blow-up was just a big misunderstanding.

Their visit is cut short by Miranda's Mom, who overreacts when she wakes up and finds her daughter gone from the apartment.
10. In "Things You Realize", Miranda finally figures out who left the Rose for Annemarie in an earlier chapter. Who was it?

Answer: Julia

On the first day back at school after the New Year, Miranda finds herself completely bored by an assembly, so she starts watching her classmates. While Annemarie concentrates on the assembly, Julia--who's clearly just as bored as Miranda--keeps looking over at Annemarie. That led to the following revelation: "Julia cared about Annemarie, but Annemarie didn't see it. Because I was standing in the way."

In an earlier chapter, Annemarie told Miranda that she thought the rose had come from Colin. Miranda, who likes him and desires him for herself, suggested to Annemarie that maybe her dad left the rose to cheer her up.

Alice is a classmate who's "too shy to admit when she had to go to the bathroom."

The other answer choice, Jay, is the name of the class genius.
