Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First child of Demelza and Ross; died aged two

Answer: Julia

Julia was taken ill with an illness described as putrid throat, which is assumed by many to be diphtheria. Demelza was also seriously afflicted, but managed to recover. Julia died aged only two.
2. Doctor and friend to Ross

Answer: Dwight

Dwight Enys served with Ross Poldark during the Napoleonic Wars and came to Cornwall to study diseases suffered by the local miners. He eventually married local heiress Caroline Penvenen.
3. First love of Ross Poldark

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth Chynoweth had an 'understanding', but not a formal engagement, with Ross Poldark but agreed to marry Francis Poldark when Ross was assumed to have died while in the army. After Francis died, Elizabeth agreed to marry George Warleggan since Ross was now married to Demelza. This decision set in motion a chain of events which would eventually lead to Elizabeth's untimely death.
4. Ross's cousin, who drowned in a copper mine

Answer: Francis

Francis Poldark married Elizabeth Chynoweth while Ross was missing for a two year period and believed to have died in the war. Ross returned during their engagement party, but Elizabeth was committed to Francis and went ahead with the wedding. Francis was a gambler and under financial pressure, and died while searching for a new source of copper in his mine.
5. Great aunt to Ross Poldark

Answer: Agatha

Great aunt Agatha lived at the Poldark ancestral home, Trenwith House, originally owned by her brother Claude, grandfather of both Francis and Ross. She remained living there, a thorn in the side of George Warleggan, until her death at the age of ninety-eight.
6. Cousin to Elizabeth and eventually married a member of the Carne family

Answer: Morwenna

Morwenna Chynoweth was brought to Trenwith to be the governess to Geoffrey-Charles. While there, she met and fell in love with Drake Carne, brother to Demelza. Not only was Drake beneath her socially, he was connected to the Poldarks, thus making him an enemy to George Warleggan.

After an horrendous first marriage, engineered by George, Morwenna was eventually reunited with Drake and married him.
7. Sworn enemy of the Poldarks and local bank owner

Answer: George

George Warleggan had a deep rooted hatred for Ross Poldark, in particular, having suffered what would now be termed bullying for his ancestry - his grandfather being a blacksmith. George became a wealthy and successful banker and eventually a Member of Parliament, but spent his life plagued with (justified) doubts over the true parentage of his son, Valentine.
8. Servant to Ross and Demelza

Answer: Prudie

Prudie Paynter and her husband, Jud, provide much of the comic relief in the Poldark series. The paid had been servants to Ross's father, Joshua, and continued living at Nampara, the house owned by Joshua, after his death. Ross's return brought an end to what had become an easy way of life, and Demelza's elevation from kitchen maid to lady of the house just added to the Paynters' problems.
9. Oldest child of Elizabeth

Answer: Geoffrey-Charles

Geoffrey-Charles Poldark is the only child of the marriage between Francis Poldark and Elizabeth Chynoweth. Geoffrey-Charles does not get on well with his stepfather, George Warleggan, and relies on Ross for fatherly advice, much to George's annoyance.
10. Fourth child of Ross and Demelza, who became a singer

Answer: Isabella-Rose

Known as Bella, she is a central figure in the twelfth, and final book, of the Poldark novels, which is titled 'Bella Poldark'. It covers the story of Bella, her older sister, Clowance, and Valentine Warleggan. Valentine is, as readers of the series will know, Ross's son, not George's, and goes off the rails completely during the period covered by the novel.
