Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start by watching this movie. When it first came out in 1981, I thought it was just about some old people making their last trip to their summer camp but it had a thoughtful story to tell. And the state of New Hampshire got to show its scenery on the big screen. Do you know which movie I mean?

Answer: On Golden Pond

"On Golden Pond" was about Norman and Ethel Thayer (Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn), a retired couple spending a summer at their camp on Golden Pond, New Hampshire. The story was not only about two people comfortable with each other after many years together but about the strained relationship between Norman and his adult daughter, Chelsea (Jane Fonda), and by extension, the real-life relationship between Henry and Jane Fonda. The other movies were shot in Vermont.
2. Would you recognize the movie from this quote? "We got two honkies out there, dressed like Hasidic diamond merchants." Tell me which film has come to mind.

Answer: The Blues Brothers

If you looked at the script for "The Blues Brothers" before it was filmed you might have thought it was too lame and silly to ever amount to anything, yet it has maintained a large popularity through the years. The story of two brothers, blues musicians, and their "mission from God" to raise money for the Catholic orphanage where they grew up in Chicago, Illinois, follows a predictable path but the interplay between John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd is deadpan-hilarious. Cab Calloway, Carrie Fisher, Aretha Franklin and Twiggy each added something to the mix.

The quote in the question was from lunch bar owner Aretha Franklin to her husband (and cook) Matt "Guitar" Murphy.
3. Here's a movie about two drug dealers and their motorcycle trip across America. Doesn't sound like much, does it? but it's now considered a landmark American counterculture film. In which film do "Captain America" and Billy take their motorcycles to New Orleans?

Answer: Easy Rider

In "Easy Rider", after selling cocaine they smuggled from Mexico to Los Angeles, California, Wyatt (aka Captain America) and friend Billy (Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper) decide to take the money, go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana and then head on to an early retirement in Florida.

Their trip across the American Southwest and South reflected societal issues and tensions current in America at the time. Along the way they picked up small-town lawyer - and alcoholic - George Hanson (Jack Nicholson) who, commenting on the easygoing lifestyle of Wyatt and Billy, said that Americans talked a lot about the value of freedom but were wary of anyone who didn't live a regimented life. Wyatt and Billy came to a sad, if predictable, ending.
4. As a war in Europe and Africa began to turn into World War II, an American in Africa tried to keep his nightclub on an even keel. It didn't help that he was surrounded by scoundrels, corrupt officials and Nazis. What was the name of that movie?

Answer: Casablanca

In "Casablanca", American expatriate Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) owned a restaurant and nightclub in Casablanca, Morocco. The movie concerned the dealings of people trying to escape the continent ahead of the war, the local characters trying to profit from them, the attempts of German officers to stop them, and a former lover of Rick's who showed up with her husband. Bogart was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the movie.
5. A small-time carnival arrived in a small town; when it left, a bored young girl left with it. What movie, starring Gary Busey and Jodie Foster dealt with a couple of hustlers trying to make a living by fleecing customers while the young girl tried to find some point to her life?

Answer: Carny

The film "Carny" followed the troupe around as the Bozo (Gary Busey) taunted customers to pay to throw baseballs at a target to drop him into a dunk tank, owner Patch (Robbie Robertson) tried to make some money despite criminal elements wanting a cut of the profits and Donna (Jodie Foster) tried to learn how the carnival works and how it might mean something to her.
6. Could someone make a science fiction crime comedy movie? Yes, and someone did. It dealt with a certain risky occupation, a fast life style, drug use and stolen aliens. Which 1984 film was this?

Answer: Repo Man

The name of that wacky, cult movie was "Repo Man". Starring Emilio Estevez as Otto, and Harry Dean Stanton as Bud, it dealt with repossessing automobiles, living the high life and trying to get a big reward by finding a car with alien bodies stolen from Los Alamos National Laboratory and turning it in to authorities. As Bud reminded Otto: "A repo man's always intense".
7. Would you recognize the movie from this quote? "No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space." What movie is this?

Answer: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise found himself, and the ship's crew, in San Francisco, California, in the 1980s. They purposely went back in time but found themselves in an "alien culture". Kirk (William Shatner), in trying to get information from Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks), a cetacean biologist, decided to be honest with her and found that, from Iowa or not, people of the period didn't readily trust someone who said he was captain of a spaceship.
8. A musical movie about the writing and signing of America's Declaration of Independence may be another film that sounds kind of boring, but this one played on the strengths and weaknesses of the principals and was much acclaimed. Which movie might it have been?

Answer: 1776

"1776" was originally a Broadway musical later made into a movie. It had a high degree of historical accuracy, many entertaining songs and featured the members of Congress often telling John Adams: "You're obnoxious and disliked, you know that". Despite Adams's burning desire for liberty his acerbic manner made the criticism close to the truth.
9. An oddball film that mixed humor and violence, had a non-linear storyline and an often head-scratching dialogue ended up being nominated for seven Academy Awards and restarted John Travolta's career? Which of these movies was it?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

"Pulp Fiction", which starred Travolta along with Uma Thurman and Samuel L. Jackson has come to be regarded as a great film. Directed and co-written by Quentin Tatantino, the movie is about big-time mobsters, small-time hoods and a mysterious briefcase.

It has had a large effect on independent films and despite its sometimes confusing developments, resulted in Academy Award nominations for the three actors listed.
10. It cost over 28-million U.S. dollars in 2005 for Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon to tell the story of an American country music artist and the woman who would become his wife. The man transcended the bounds of country music so often that he might have had his own music category. What was the name of the movie about Johnny and June Carter Cash?

Answer: Walk the Line

"Walk the Line" was the name of one of Johnny Cash's early rockabilly hit records and also the name of the movie. Cash was one of a few music artists who could cross boundaries from one musical genre to another and be welcomed in both. He had his problems - with stardom and drugs - but becoming involved with, and eventually marrying, June Carter probably saved his life. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were both nominated for Academy Awards for their work in the movie; she won her nomination.

It took much work for the real June Carter to get Johnny Cash off drugs; it became a Carter family effort. One scene from the movie (possibly true) shows her mother, Maybelle (Sandra Ellis Lafferty) on the front walk of Cash's house with a double-barreled shotgun in her hands, telling an approaching drug dealer: "You better get on out of here".
