Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Billy (Robert Downey Jr.) doing at the beginning of the movie that got him into trouble, causing his flying license to be revoked?

Answer: Giving traffic reports on a radio station

He flew down by a semi and made some not-too-nice remarks about the driver who was blocking both lanes of traffic when there was an ambulance trying to get through to an accident. Unfortunately, the truck driver happened to be listening to that station and was a little irked. He gave Billy the finger and said a few choice swear words to him as he flew off.
2. Billy knew exactly what he was getting into when he signed up for the mission in Laos.

Answer: false

Billy signed up for Air America, a secret operation in Laos that carried and dropped cargo down to the Laoasian people. Piece of cake, right? Unfortunately, the North Vietnamese soldiers were moving into the country and trying to cut off supplies, making it a dangerous job for the American civilian pilots. Billy didn't get told that part of the deal.
3. Which toe did Gene get shot off while flying a run?

Answer: Left big toe

He got it shot off right through the floor of the cockpit and had it cremated. He kept the ashes from it around his neck. Billy asked him why he didn't have it sewn back on and he responded, "Well, I figure once a piece of me gets shot off, I really don't want it back anymore." Babo (another pilot that was flying with them) told him that the toe was still with them in spirit.
4. Gene took Billy up on his first flight. When he thought that Billy had the hang of it, he left the front of the plane. What was it that he went and did?

Answer: Colored in a coloring book

He and Babo were each coloring a picture in the book and fighting over the crayons because Babo told Gene that "the last time you colored the sky all purple it looked stupid." Meanwhile, Billy nearly flew into a mountain and was trying to ask them if there are any higher peaks than that. Gene told him, "Don't bother me while I'm coloring."
5. Billy admited that flying wasn't a problem for him, it was the landing part of it. Throughout the movie, he crashed two planes. When he crashed the large cargo plane the first time, General Soong came to rescue him.

Answer: false

General Soong came to the crash site and loaded up the illegal cargo that was on the plane, then took off, leaving Billy, Jack and Kwan behind. "We no go home now." - "Opium go home now."
6. When Gene and Billy were shot down (Gene was flying this time), the helicopter they were flying in landed upside down high up in a tree. Who was the first one who unbuckled his seatbelt and crashed through the cockpit?

Answer: Gene

Gene crashed out of it then rolled down an embankment. As he laid there groaning and in pain, he told Billy the landing was pretty soft!
7. How did Jack die?

Answer: His plane got shot down.

Jack was always saying that the "golden B.B." would someday kill him. That "B.B" hit his plane while he was on a recovery mission looking for Gene and Billy. For those of you that chose he went crazy, that was a good guess - anybody that built a mini-golf course in his backyard, got drunk and then went out and shot lizards on it all night long had to be a little off! (He always used a silencer on his gun though because he was a respectful man.)
8. When Billy found out that they were hauling opium around on their planes for General Soong, what did he do to try and stop it?

Answer: Blew up the illegal drug factory

The factory was in an old Pepsi Cola bottling plant. He used a make-shift bomb to blow it up - 3 grenades on top of a lit Bunson burner with a can of gasoline set next to it. Billy was feeling pretty good about the whole thing until Gene informed him that the bomb only shut the factory down for a whole three hours.

He also said, "There was a cloud of opium smoke over the town last night."
9. One day while in flight, Billy and Babo found out that they were being set up for carting around opium. In order to avoid getting caught, Billy crashed another smaller plane on the same abandoned airstrip where he crashed the first time. How did Billy hide the new wreckage so that the people that were setting them up wouldn't see it?

Answer: He landed the plane inside another plane.

Two of the head people at Air America were trying to keep it from an American senator that they were knowingly letting General Soong use their planes to transport his opium, so they set Billy up to take the fall. Fortunately, thanks to Billy's quick thinking, the plan failed and the senator saw through the set-up.
10. Gene dumped out his cargo in order to save the villagers from General Soong and his army.

Answer: True

General Soong wanted the village because it was right next to the poppy fields (a.k.a. his source of opium), so the village had to be evacuated. Gene received a call for help from an aid saying that the village was under heavy fire and they needed help evacuating the people. Meanwhile, he was carrying the "nest egg" for his retirement (all the guns he had collected throughout the movie) to a potential buyer, so when the call came in he had to make a choice.

He chose to fly the villagers out of there and ended up blowing up his entire cargo of guns so they wouldn't fall into enemy hands.
