Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Any quiz on Ladd should start with "Shane" - his best movie (and one of the best Westerns ever made). Who played the young boy?

Answer: Brandon De Wilde

A nice job by the kid - who died at 30 in a traffic accident. Great supporting job by Ladd's good friend, Van Heflin. Jean Arthur was also quite good as Heflin's wife; Jack Palance turned in a memorable role as a villain. A classic.
2. Ladd's "breakthrough" came with "This Gun for Hire"; the movie teamed him with a leading lady who would appear in other Ladd movies. Who was she?

Answer: Veronica Lake

Lake was perhaps more known for her hairdo than for anything else; her life was tough and her career was short. Ladd is fine as "Raven", a killer on the loose.
3. "The Blue Dahlia" was another well-known Ladd movie. To what does the movie title refer?

Answer: It's the name of a club

This is a good vehicle for Ladd. William Bendix - a good friend of Ladd's - goes along for the ride.
4. "The Iron Mistress" featured Ladd as what famous Westerner?

Answer: Jim Bowie

It's an enjoyable western - but don't pay any attention to the "history". Virginia Mayo plays the girl.

Answer: Richard Henry Dana

Brian Donlevy played the author in this tale of men at sea.

Answer: Dashiell Hammett

This was early in Ladd's career. (It was well-received, but I could never get into it.)Brian Donlevy also starred in this one.
7. Ladd starred in the title role of "Whispering Smith". Who co-starred as Smith's friend gone bad?

Answer: Robert Preston

Ladd starred in the title role. Preston turns in his usual fine performance.

Answer: Sophia Loren

For whatever reason, the movie didn't work. (Script? Chemistry?)

Ladd played Nevada Smith. (Steve McQueen later played the character.)
George Peppard starred in this Harold Robbins soaper, which included Carroll Baker and Martha Hyer.
