When the infant Princess Aurora is cursed to die before her sixteenth birthday by an angry fairy named Maleficent, one of the three good fairies then uses her blessing to alter the spell placed on Aurora so that she would only fall into a deep sleep, to be awoken by a true love's kiss. To further protect Aurora, the three good fairies take her away from the castle until Aurora turns 16.

Unfortunately, Maleficent's curse strikes Aurora, placing her in a deep sleep. Since the curse on Aurora can only be broken by a kiss of true love, the three good fairies also put the kingdom into a deep sleep. The fairies then set about trying to free Aurora's true love, Prince Phillip, who is being held by Maleficent.
