Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Anne of the Thousand Days" was released in December of 1969. Which of the following pairs produced and directed the movie?

Answer: Hal B. Wallis and Charles Jarrott

Hal B. Wallis also produced such great films as "Casablanca", "The Maltese Falcon" and "Barefoot in the Park".
Along with "Anne of the Thousand Days", Charles Jarrott directed "Mary Queen of Scots", "Lost Horizon" and "The Other Side of Midnight".
Saul Chaplin and Robert Wise produced and directed "The Sound of Music".
Hal B. Wallis and Henry Hathaway produced and directed "True Grit".
"To Kill a Mockingbird" was produced and directed by Alan J. Pakula and Robert Mulligan.
2. What was the tagline for "Anne of the Thousand Days"?

Answer: He was King. She was barely 18. And in their thousand days they played out the most passionate and shocking love story in history!

The tagline says it well. Henry VIII became obsessed with the beautiful Anne Boleyn and bored with his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She was six years his senior and had been married to his elder brother Arthur, who had died shortly after the marriage. Catherine had failed to give Henry a son, and he convinced himself that because he had wed his dead brother's wife, his marriage to Catherine was cursed.

In Anne, he saw new hope for an heir to the throne of England, as well as youth and beauty, but she was in love and engaged to Harry Lord Percy and did not want to become a mistress of the King.

The movie told the story of Henry's struggle to win Anne, her long resistance, her eventual surrender and finally her execution. The other three taglines were from the movies, "Mary Queen of Scots", "Cleopatra" and "Henry VIII".
3. King Henry VIII was portrayed by an actor who was once the highest paid actor in Hollywood. Which one of the following actors was he?

Answer: Richard Burton

Richard Burton portrayed King Henry VIII of England from his discovery of Anne Boleyn and his determination in divorcing his first Queen to marry Anne, to his failure in producing an heir with Anne and finally ridding himself of her with her execution.
In his career, Richard Burton never won an Academy Award, but was nominated for seven, including Best Actor for his role in this movie. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in August of 1984, at the age of 58. He was passionate and convincing in his role of Henry VIII, but lost the Best Actor award to John Wayne in "True Grit".
4. Which actress had the first important role of her career playing the second and most famous wife of Henry VIII's, Anne Boleyn?

Answer: Genevieve Bujold

Genevieve Bujold played the role of Anne Boleyn, who became the second wife of Henry VIII, after he divorced his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. The movie detailed Henry's obsession with Anne and her resistance to him, until she finally agreed to marry him if he made her Queen of England. Ms. Bujold is a French Canadian actress who has also starred in such movies as "The Trojan Women" with Katherine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave, "Coma" with Michael Douglas and "Tightrope" with Clint Eastwood. She won a Golden Globe award for her performance in "Anne of the Thousand Days" and was nominated for Best Actress at the 1970 Academy Awards.

She lost the award to Maggie Smith in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie", but in my opinion, should have won. I've never seen an actress play the role of Anne Boleyn quite the way Genevieve Bujold did.
5. Which actress portrayed Henry VIII's first wife and daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, Catherine of Aragon?

Answer: Irene Pappas

Irene Pappas was born in Greece in 1926. In this movie she played the long suffering, devoted first wife of Henry VIII. She also starred as "Maria Pappadimos" in "The Guns of Navarone" in 1961 with Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn, as well as "Drosoula" in the 2001 movie, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" alongside Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz.
6. Which of the following actors played the powerful and persuasive statesman and advisor to the King, Cardinal Wolsey?

Answer: Anthony Quayle

Anthony Quayle was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this movie, playing the ageing, but cunning Cardinal Wolsey, who virtually ruled England, while King Henry was more interested in "personal" matters. He eventually fell from the King's grace, however, due to the wrath and revenge of Anne Boleyn. Anthony Quayle also appeared in "The Guns of Navarone" and "Lawrence of Arabia". He was knighted in 1985 and died in 1989 at the age of 76.
7. Which of the following actors played the part of Thomas Cromwell, Henry's unscrupulous advisor?

Answer: John Colicos

John Colicos played the lawyer, Thomas Cromwell, who learned his trade under Cardinal Wolsey and took over as main advisor to King Henry after Wolsey's downfall. It was Cromwell who convinced King Henry to accuse Anne of high treason and adultery and he who gathered all of the "evidence" used to convict her and condemn her to death. John was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1928.

He was a noted stage actor in Canada, the U.S. and UK, but is probably best remembered for his role as Klingon Kor in the TV series "Star Trek".

He also had a role in the daytime soap opera "General Hospital" as well as in movies such as "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "The Wrath of God". John Colicos died in 1970 after several heart attacks.
8. In the scene where Anne gave birth to Elizabeth, she was at first hysterical and horrified that she had given birth to a daughter, knowing Henry was desperate for a male heir. She pulled herself together before he arrived and was holding Elizabeth and smiling as he entered the bedchamber. He was angry when he discovered that Anne had borne him a daughter. Anne said to Henry, as he was leaving the room; "Won't you kiss your daughter?" What was his reply?

Answer: "My daughter; no; when she's older- and when she has a brother!"

Henry then walked out and slammed the door behind him. At this point in the movie, Henry was already beginning to tire of Anne and told her he no longer loved her. Less than a year later, however, Anne delivered a stillborn boy. Her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk commented; "She has miscarried of her savior."
9. When Henry decided that he wanted to marry Jane Seymour, he and his lawyer, Thomas Cromwell, were trying to figure out a way to get rid of Anne. Henry insisted that his marriage to Anne was incestuous because he had a child with her sister Mary. Cromwell's answer to this was what?

Answer: "We used the incest excuse last time. We can't make a habit of it."

Cromwell then told Henry that there were rumors that Anne had been unfaithful and that she should be tried for adultery and treason. Henry ordered Cromwell to gather the evidence. Cromwell gathered false evidence accusing Anne of adultery with at least four men, including her brother George Boleyn and her personal musician, Mark Smeaton.
The people of England hated Anne, because they believed that Catherine was the true Queen.
Mary and Anne Boleyn were true sisters.
10. In the Tower Scene, while Anne was awaiting her execution, King Henry paid her a visit. What was the last thing she said to him?

Answer: "Elizabeth shall be a greater queen than any king of yours! She shall rule a greater England than you could ever have built! Yes - MY Elizabeth SHALL BE QUEEN! And my blood will have been well spent! "

Although it was historically incorrect, Henry and Anne exchanged passionate words in the Tower as he tried to convince her to grant him a divorce and to take Elizabeth and leave the Royal Court. This would have meant disinheritance for Elizabeth and shame for both mother and daughter. Anne refused and was executed for high treason and adultery. She said "I have a little neck" to Master Kingston just before she was beheaded.

Henry and Anne's daughter, Elizabeth became Queen of England in 1558 and ruled until her death in 1603.
