Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bumbling and nervous this striking looking droid was never seen far from his bleeping little sidekick. Appearing in "Star Wars" who was this robot?

Answer: C-3PO

Anthony Daniels holds a special place in our hearts as the hapless Threepio. He appears in a brief on screen cameo during "Episode II: Clone Wars" as Lt. Faytonni.
Originally Daniels declined the role of Threepio as he believed robots were just talking boxes on legs. Oh how wrong he was.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
I'd certainly say so.
2. It's 1979 now and another robot, this time an android slides onto our screens with charm, sophistication and intelligence. Building a rapport with the crew ensures his true identity and purpose isn't revealed...not until he is decapitated with a fire extinguisher anyway! Appearing in "Alien" and setting a running theme throughout the series, who is he?

Answer: Ash, Science Officer of the Nostromo

Ash, charming at first, is a rather nasty little android. Hardly his fault, the company programmed him that way.
Although HAL was indeed a bad cookie, he wasn't technically a robot. More of a super computer.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
On balance...I'd have to say no.
3. It has often been said that man's desire to build robots comes from his need to have slaves or servants to do all the work. This is apparent in many films and we have seen countless robot 'butlers' through the years. In "Bicentennial Man" we see one servant robot fulfil his desire to become human through many generations. A moving and heartwarming film, who plays Andrew the robot?

Answer: Robin Williams

Andrew is governed by the three laws of robotics prevalent in many of Asimov's stories. As this film is about a robot becoming human there are several poignant subtle references to this. When Andrew is first listening to the record player the Aria is from "Rusalka" in which a water nymph wants to become human for love.
Similarly the female robot Galatea is named after the statue the Greek gods brought to life.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
Undeniably, with more than just a hint of humanity.
4. First broadcast in a televised film in 1938, which play by Josef and Karel Kapek first introduced the world to the term 'robot?'

Answer: Rossum's Universal Robots

The Czech play debuted in 1921 and is the first instance of the word Robot ever appearing. A terribly influential play full of terribly unfriendly Robots, "R.U.R" remains one of the most influential pieces of science fiction and was the first piece of science fiction to be broadcast on television.

In 2008 it was announced that a film version would be produced for theatrical release, directed by James Kerwin.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
No, but perhaps a little misunderstood.
5. The media is full of robots gone bad, so when it comes to Blue Sky Productions, you know you're in safe hands. Which of their films features Rodney Copperbottom and Fender?

Answer: Robots

This whacky and wildly entertaining film brags a host of big name cameos from the likes of John Mahoney ("Frasier"), Jim Carrey ("Ace Ventura"), Will Ferrell ("Elf") and even James Earl Jones ("Star Wars").

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
Yes, and darn funny too might I add!
6. Which of these actors voiced Marvin the Paranoid Android in the remake (2005) of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?"

Answer: Alan Rickman

This terribly depressed yet terribly friendly robot was played by Warrick Davis and ably voiced by Alan Rickman. His entire psyche can be summed up in his 'lullabye'

Now the world has gone to bed
Darkness won't engulf my head
I can see by infra-red
How I hate the night

Now I lay me down to sleep
Try to count electric sheep
Sweet dream wishes you can keep
How I hate the night

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
Yes, just rather pessimistic.
7. Back to "Star Wars" again, and in "Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back" we see a surgical robot droid operating on Luke Skywalker. What procedure was it performing?

Answer: Replacing Luke's severed hand

Robots have been used for medicine since the early 1980s. Sounds pretty gruesome but the first robot used was to precisely place a needle for a brain biopsy. Now, in as recently as 2009, kidney transplants are being done robot assisted.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
Oh yes!
8. Isaac Asimov is one of the most prolific writers of his time and widely regarded as one of the fathers of Science Fiction. Asimov introduced us to the Three Laws of Robotics designed to govern all Robots and keep them generally "friendly" in nature. Appearing in many films, particularly "I, Robot", which of the following is NOT one of Asimov's three laws which we see at the start of the film in the form of title cards?

Answer: A Robot must never attempt to alter its programming

These three laws were prevalent in all of Asimov's works regarding robots. They have been subjected to various modifications and alterations throughout his writing career, and a common theme is Robots generally trying to overcome the laws and subvert their meaning.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
Only as the laws govern...
9. In 1986 we were delighted with a caterpillar-tracked, heartwarming little robot in search of input. Voiced by Tim Blaney, and appearing in "Short Circuit", who was this robot?

Answer: Johnny 5

"Short Circuit" was never originally intended to be a comedy film. In the original draft of the script Johnny 5 was the villain of the piece, an out of control military weapon on a rampage. Thankfully after several script revisions the film's darker side was toned down and it transformed into this family comedy.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
About as friendly as they come...but this bot has attitude! Just ask 'Lazerlips!' Did you know his momma was a snowblower?
10. Robots can be friendly, and robots can be unfriendly. For years children and even young teens were delighted with an all out battle of both factions. On one side the Autobots...on the other, The Decepticons. These 'robots in disguise' have exploded back onto our screens in a high budget film by Michael Bay. (2007) But what actor voices their leader, Optimus Prime?

Answer: Peter Cullen

All good voice actors in themselves, but Peter Cullen is the voice of Optimus Prime. Providing the original voice in the TV series he reprised the role for the film. Cullen has leant his voice to some unlikely characters over the years including that of Eeyore in Winnie-the-Pooh.

"Are you a friendly Robot?"
Not only friendly, but guardians too.
