Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's an ohm? Koala mixes up some words, Curly.

Answer: Oklahoma!

The words "mixes up" indicate an anagram, in this case of the words "ohm koala". Curly is a reference to a character in the movie.

"Oklahoma!" (1955) was a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical about cowboys and farmers and their lives and loves in Oklahoma just before it achieved statehood. Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones starred as Curly and Laurey and Rod Steiger played the heavy. Songs included "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'", "Kansas City", "People Will Say We're In Love" and the title tune.
2. So, never attack ten Canadian hunters first, Jason.

Answer: snatch.

The word "first" tells us to use the first letters of the preceding words to find the title. Jason is an allusion to one of the cast members of the movie.

"Snatch" (2000), sometimes known as "snatch.", was a crime caper directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Jason Statham, Brad Pitt, Vinnie Jones and a number of others. Essentially what happened was that a diamond went missing and a number of different groups bumbled around trying to find it before the others did. It's really quite funny.
3. O! Viler child, twist yourself.

Answer: Oliver!

"Twist" indicates an anagram, in this case of the words "o viler". It is also a pointer to the child in question, i.e. Oliver Twist.

"Oliver!" (1968) was a musical version of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist", starring Mark Lester (as Oliver), Oliver Reed, Ron Moody and Jack Wild. In a nutshell, orphan Oliver became too greedy for the workhouse and was farmed out, eventually falling in with Fagin (Moody) and his band of youthful pickpockets. He endured some hard times before his eventual rescue from poverty. Songs included "Consider Yourself", "Food, Glorious Food" and "As Long As He Needs Me".
4. Ultimately, half a lei, Will, was a half message to the president.

Answer: Fail-Safe

"Ultimately" tells us to use the last letters of the following words to find the answer, thus:

...halF A leI wilL waS A halF messagE

The reference to the president (Henry Fonda) was because that character was important to the plot of "Fail-Safe" (1964), in which a crisis was created when nuclear weapons were accidentally deployed against Moscow. The struggle he and his advisers had to devise a way of averting an all out nuclear war and the solution they reached make up the bulk of the movie. Others in the cast were Dan O'Herlihy, Larry Hagman, Walter Matthau and Fritz Weaver.
5. This mad pen, sir, confuses Peter's work.

Answer: Spider-Man

"Confuses" is the indication that "mad pen sir" should be anagrammed. Peter is a reference to Spider-Man's alter ego, Peter Parker.

"Spider-Man" (2002) starred Tobey Maguire in the title role, and told us how an unhappy teenager (Peter Parker) became a superhero after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Willem Dafoe and Kirsten Dunst were also in the cast. Maguire appeared in sequels in 2004 and 2007, before passing the costume on to Andrew Garfield, who was the "amazing" Spider-man in 2012 and 2014.
6. Did you see the asp lash out at Tom?

Answer: Splash

"Did you see" hints that you should look for a hidden title... "the aSP LASH out at...". Tom is a reference to Tom Hanks, who starred in the movie.

Ron Howard directed "Splash" (1984), which was a fantasy about a young man (Hanks) who fell in love with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah). To be fair, the mermaid was posing as a regular human being with legs instead of a tail when this happened, though they had met underwater as children when she saved him from drowning. Eugene Levy and John Candy also appeared.
7. Visit the Red Mill in Paris with Ewan.

Answer: Moulin Rouge!

"Red Mill" is the English translation of "Moulin Rouge!". Ewan is a reference to the star of the movie.

Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge!" (2001) was essentially a love story about Christian (Ewan McGregor) who fell in love with Satine (Nicole Kidman), a performer at the title club. She was also being courted by a richer man, and dealing with health issues as well. The soundtrack included such diverse numbers as "Your Song", "The Sound of Music" and "Nature Boy".
8. Jim's a repetitive prevaricator.

Answer: Liar Liar

Jim refers to the star of the movie, the title of which is a synonym for prevaricator, repeated.

In "Liar, Liar" (1997) Jim Carrey played a lawyer given to stretching the truth (to be polite), whose son's birthday wish was for his father not to be able to lie for a day. The wish was granted and hilarity ensued, at least for viewers of the film, if not for poor Jim, who found being completely truthful a detriment to his job.
9. Wash cut pod and stir, Barbra.

Answer: What's Up Doc?

"And stir" indicates an anagram of the preceding words. Barbra is a clue to the star of the movie.

"What's Up Doc?" (1972) was a comedy directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. It was an homage to screwball comedies of the past, involving the mixing up of identical luggage, stolen jewels, stolen papers, mismatched couples and a lot of laughter. Madeline Kahn made her feature film debut.
10. Jessica's match belongs to addictive fish.

Answer: Molly's Game

Jessica refers to the star of the movie. The rest of the clue involves double (and triple) definitions: match = game
addictive fish = refers to the drug known as Molly and a type of fish found in aquariums, also called a molly
The game belongs to molly, hence "Molly's Game".

"Molly's Game" (2017) was based on the true story of Molly Bloom, who after an injury ended her skiing career, became the operator of a high stakes poker game. The movie traced her career from its beginnings, through success to ultimate trouble with both the law and the Russian mob. Jessica Chastain played Molly and Idris Elba, Kevin Costner and Michael Cera were other members of the cast.
