Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An emotionally disturbed woman gives "birth" to a bunch of blond haired terrors that act out her fits of rage. Oliver Reed played her doctor in this weirdly terrifying movie.

Answer: The Brood

This 1979 movie by David Cronenberg is filled with his usual grotesque special effects. I saw this movie when I was nine and it still makes me squeamish.
2. This next movie is classified as horror, but it is more strange than scary. William Hurt plays a researcher on a mission to find his inner man through the use of hallucinogenic drugs and a submersion tank. He almost loses his family in the process. This movie is filled with some pretty bizarre special effects.

Answer: Altered States

This 1980 movie was William Hurt's first starring role. The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards that year: Best Art Direction/Set Decoration and Best Original Score.
3. This movie is about a mausoleum, two brothers, a very tall and ghastly man, hooded midgets and a flying chrome sphere that slices and dices. I still get chills when I see Angus Scrimm's (The Tall Man) face.

Answer: Phantasm

The ads called this movie "a truly bizarre science-fiction horror fantasy." That basically sums it up right there. Scenes were cut out of this movie to avoid an "X" rating.
4. This movie is based on a Dean Koontz novel and is about a computer that gets angry with its programmer and gets its revenge by taking over his household and trapping his wife. Julie Christie and Fritz Weaver star in this futuristic thriller.

Answer: Demon Seed

The movie is a bit far-fetched, but it still has an element of terror. It is terrifying to think that a computer can be smarter than its programmer.
5. This movie was about a hospital that purposely induced young and healthy patients into an unconscious state. It was based on the Robin Cook novel and starred Michael Douglas and Genevieve Bujold.

Answer: Coma

After watching this movie it should make you feel even more uncomfortable about going to the hospital. The suspense continued right up to the very end; you didn't know who to trust.
6. This movie is supposedly based on an actual event. It involves a family and the "haunted" house they just moved into. The father starts acting weird, the little girl sees imaginary "friends", the walls ooze, and the flies buzz. This movie stars James Brolin, Rod Steiger, and Margot Kidder.

Answer: The Amityville Horror

Rod Steiger is great as the exorcist and James Brolin gives a creepy performance as the father. This movie was followed by a slew of poorly done sequels.
7. This is one of the cheesiest horrors of all time. Ernest Borgnine plays Satan's head minister and goes to battle with a young and fit William Shatner and his brother played by Tom Skerritt.

Answer: Devil's Rain

The technical advisor for this movie was Anton Szandor Lavey, High Priest of the Church of Satan. The movie has a twist ending that shows that evil never dies.
8. This is one of my favorites. It features the number 666 and a little boy who is considered to be the devil. Need I say more? It stars the late Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

Answer: The Omen

This is one of the most terrifying movies I've ever seen. It's too bad the sequels aren't as good.
9. This movie is about a group of tourists that happen upon a roadside museum and the crazy man that owns it. Little do they know that the mannequins in his museum were once human. It stars Chuck Connors and Tanya Roberts.

Answer: Tourist Trap

This movie is corny to watch now, but as a child it really freaked me out. Chuck Connors is fabulous as Mr. Slausen.
10. Which is NOT the title of an actual movie?

Answer: The Devil's Handbag

"The Devil's Handbag" is not a real title. "Basket Case" is about a pair of Siamese twins, separated at birth - one normal, the other deformed (and carried around in a basket by his brother). "Motel Hell" is a cheesy movie about a farmer who makes smoked sausages using humans. "God Told Me To" is about a mass murderer, born of a virgin mother, and the cop trying to stop him.
