Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1960 saw "Psycho" hit the screens and it had most of us on the edge of our seats. Surely you remember the peep hole that Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) used to view the attractive Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), as well as the shower scene? What was the prophetic sounding name that Marion Crane used when she booked into the Bates Motel?

Answer: Marie Samuels

Samuel was the name of the Hebrew prophet that was to become their leader, which was the clue to this quiz. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) misappropriated a large sum of money from her employee by not banking it as she was supposed to, and in the process of fleeing with the money, was intercepted by a police officer regarding a driving matter. Although he allowed Marion to continue after the interception, the officer decided to follow her, sensing something was not right. Even after trading in her car with another vehicle, he was still on the scent. Knowing that it was only a matter of time before her ex boss found out she had not deposited the money, as well as that the police officer had sighted her license with her correct name, Marion Crane chose to book into the Bates Motel under the alias of Marie Samuels.

First showing in 1960 and grossing $11.2 million, "Psycho" saw the start to a brilliant decade of memorable movies. At the 1961 Academy Awards, it won four times, and achieved a further six other awards in the same year.

2. Now to 1961. Let's change direction and see if you can remember which movie version of a 1957 Broadway production was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. We need the name of the movie as well as the number of Academy Awards it won in 1961.

Answer: "West Side Story" - 10 Academy Awards

Four of the greatest movies to choose from, but sadly there can only be one winner. If you picked up that the clue was the word "direction", you are doing great. Starring Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Richard Beymer, as well as many others, "West Side Story" (the movie), scooped an incredible 10 out of 11 nominated awards, including the much cherished Best Picture award. The movie was an adaptation of the Broadway production, which ran for 732 nights and was also hugely successful. Based on the romantic tragedy of "Romeo and Juliet", the scene was New York City, and gang warfare existed. This classic saw The White Jets, who had Riff as their leader, fighting for the same turf as the Bernardo-led Puerto Rican Sharks. This movie detailed what happened when an ex-member of the Jets, who was also a best friend of Riff, fell in love with Bernado's younger sister. Did love prevail, or did this romance go the same way as the lovers that the movie was based on?

3. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke both played starring roles in this classic 1962 tear jerker that won each actress an Oscar. Surprisingly, 17 years later, Patty Duke went on to portray the role that Anne Bancroft played originally. Name the film.

Answer: The Miracle Worker

After all the cruel jokes that went around when we were kids about Helen Keller, played by Patty Duke, I found it hard to give a clue to this fact-based story. The clue was actually the fact that Patty Duke played Helen Keller (Who became deaf and blind at 19 months after contracting a virus that doctors at the time described as "acute congestion of the stomach and the brain") in the original version, and later went on to play Annie Sullivan who was Helen Keller's carer and tutor in the 1979 version, which Anne Bancroft played originally.

In '62, Anne won the Best Actress Oscar, whilst Patty won the Best Supporting Actress award. On a final note, "The Miracle Worker", honored Annie Sullivan for the amazing work, time, and effort that she put in towards helping Helen Keller lead something of a life.

4. The largest grossing movie of 1963 achieved $26 million but still fell $18 million short of covering the exorbitant cost of its production. Goes to show that love does not always run smooth. Name the film.

Answer: Cleopatra

Yes, even with Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, Richard Burton portraying Marc Antony, and Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar, this movie just never seemed to please everyone, hence its ratings and reviews. The clue was "love does not always run smooth", referring to the loving relationship that both Marc Antony and Julius Caesar held for the enchanting Cleopatra.

5. "Becket" was released in 1964. Both Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton were nominated for Best Actor Oscars. Burton played the title character, but which great-grandson of William the Conqueror Royal did O'Toole play?

Answer: King Henry II

The movie "Becket", an adaptation of the play "Becket" by Jean Anouilh, received 12 Oscar nominations, winning one, as well as six Bafta (comparable to British Oscars) nominations, winning four. Peter O'Toole was nominated for Best Actor Oscars for "Becket" and "The Lion In Winter", playing Henry II in both films, an Oscar first. This film was one of the greatest historical dramas of all time with three of our generation's best actors - Burton, O'Toole and John Gielgud, who received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his efforts as King Louis VII of France. The clue was that King Henry II was the great-grandson of William the Conqueror. In this movie, King Henry ll realised that due to his age, he would soon have to announce who, out of his three sons, would be his successor on his passing. He decided on an elaborate ploy to make his decision by way of staging a reunion. He invited his imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitane, Princess Alais, who was his mistress, his three sons, as well as King Philip of France, who was Princess Alais's brother, to announce his decision.

Unbeknown to Henry II, his wife and sons have come up with their own individual devilish ploy to make sure that the decision goes their way. This is a movie full of twists and turns that will intrigue you to the very end.

6. What type of high stakes poker was played throughout the movie "The Cincinnati Kid" (1965), starring Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson? To some folk it can be an odd game.

Answer: 5 card stud

"The Cincinnati Kid" was originally filmed in black and white by Sam Peckinpah, but he was replaced by Norman Jewison, who used muted colors throughout. The story was a classic tale of old veteran versus young gunslinger, but on a poker table. The action built to one climactic game. The players included Cab Calloway, Jack Weston, Rip Torn, and Karl Malden. The film also starred Joan Blondell, Ann-Margaret and Tuesday Weld. Great movie for anybody who's ever watched any of the TV poker that is so popular today. And of course the clue word was "odd", of which the number '5' definitely is.

7. Hey there, here is a tricky one for you. Which two siblings, who appeared in separate 1966 movies, both received Best Actor/Actress Oscar nominations for their efforts in these roles at the '67 Oscars?

Answer: Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave

In 1966, Vanessa co-starred with David Warner in the brilliant dark comedy, "Morgan! A Suitable Case for Treatment", one of three movies she appeared in that year. Her sister, Lynn, who was an early prodigy of Laurence Olivier, shone as the iconic Georgy in the movie "Georgy Girl". "Hey there" was the clue as a major hit for The Seekers was "(Hey There) Georgy Girl", the title song to this movie. Elizabeth Taylor won the Best Actress Oscar Award, however, for her scenery chewing performance as Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff".

Vanessa went on to earn five more Oscar nominations, finally winning a coveted Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1977 for her role in "Julia". Lynn received a further Oscar nomination in 1999 for her part in "Gods and Monsters".

A great question by mrsniceguy.
8. "The Dirty Dozen", "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", "You only Live Twice", as well as "The Jungle Book" were all movie hits in 1967. All made it into the top 10 grossing films worldwide for that year. So too did three of the following four choices. In fact, all four choices won an Academy Award, but the same three won in 1968, whereas the fourth won its Academy Award in 1969. It should be child's play to pick the odd one out.

Answer: Rosemary's Baby

"Rosemary's Baby" saw Ruth Gordon win the Best Supporting Actress at the 1969 Academy Awards. At the 1968 Academy Awards, Mike Nichols was presented with the Best Director Academy Award for "The Graduate", whilst "Bonnie and Clyde" opened the doors for Estelle Parsons, who won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award. "In the Heat of the Night" achieved the Best Picture Academy Award which was presented to Mirisch, United Artists. "Child's play" was the clue referring to the word "baby".

The movie itself centered around Rosemary Woodhouse, a wife who craved to have her first child, and her struggling actor husband, Guy, who also wanted to be a parent, but not until their living circumstances improved. Upon arriving in New York City, they moved into an apartment complex known as the Bramford. Although they were warned that the apartment was the home of both witchcraft, as well as unexplained occurrences, they still took up tenancy in the complex. They were soon befriended by the Castevets, an elderly couple who are best described as "different". Rosemary disliked their attention, whereas Guy continued with the friendship. A lucky break for Guy arrived in an acting role that changed his mind about giving Rosemary the child she so desperately wanted. Rosemary became pregnant, and also realized that the Bramford was everything that they were warned about and worse. Fearing that the witches and the warlocks of the complex wanted her child to be a sacrifice to appease their evilness, Rosemary tried to convince Guy that things were not right. What she did not realize is that things were worse than what she imagined. Much, much worse.

9. Let's move on to 1968. All of the four actors/actresses listed below appeared in at least one movie that made it into the list of the top 10 grossing films for the year according to Wikipedia, but which cool artist was able to escape the year being the only one to appear in two films that made it into this category?

Answer: Steve McQueen

We gave two clues with this one. Steve McQueen was known as the "King of Cool" and appeared in "The Great Escape". In 1968, McQueen starred in "Bullitt", which grossed over $20 million and came in at No. 3, as well as "The Thomas Crown Affair", which scraped in at No. 9 with box office figures of $11.6 million. He was the only actor to achieve this amazing feat. Of the other choices, Heston appeared in "Planet of the Apes" (No. 7 with $15 million), Hepburn in "The Lion in Winter" (No. 10 and $10.006 million), and Fonda came in at No. 8 in a movie that also earned $15 million and was titled "Yours, Mine and Ours".

Take a bow, fredsixties, for this ripper.
10. 1969 saw the sixth installment of James Bond, but this time George Lazenby was 007. The film also featured Telly Savalas as Blofeld. Don't keep it to yourself - what was the title of this Bond movie which received mixed reviews?

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

To fail to keep a secret is when you "don't keep it to yourself". This was the clue for this little teaser. Once again, the movie had Bond in the company of some very beautiful women. None more so than Tracy Draco, who Bond persuaded not to commit suicide. Tracy turned out to be the daughter of a very powerful mob boss. Wanting the best for his daughter, the boss tried to get Bond to marry her. He offered Bond information that would lead Bond to his arch enemy, Ernst Blofeld, if Bond was to look after his daughter. Bond agreed, purely to get to Blofeld, but along the way, his feelings grew for Tracy, and he faced the decision of loyalty to his country, against his romantic feelings for Tracy. A very intriguing story. George Lazenby originally hailed from Australia and this was his only appearance as James Bond. He made some lesser budget movies after this movie but nothing that set the world on fire. Telly Savalas went on to become the bald headed, lollipop carrying detective in the long running series "Kojak".

Lord Digby was at his most devilish when he thought up this great question.
