Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Coming 2 America" opens with an important milestone in the life of Prince Akeem. What is this event being celebrated?

Answer: 30 year wedding anniversary

Prince Akeem and Princess Lisa are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary at the beginning of the film. There is plenty of fanfare for the event with decorations and celebrations throughout the day. Humorously Prince Akeem also mentions that this day marks 30 years of delicious fast food in the country as well.
2. While on his deathbed, King Jaffe tells Prince Akeem that he has a son that he does not know about. Where did the encounter that produced Akeem's out-of-wedlock son occur?

Answer: Queens, NY

Comically in this scene King Jaffe (James Earl Jones) and his shaman Baba (one of Arsenio Hall's four roles) poke fun at Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) for not producing a male heir. Prince Akeem does not remember any situation on his trip to Queens, NY decades ago that could have produced a son.

His advisor Semmi jogs his memory about a situation in which he was impaired for a night and a sexual encounter occurred.
3. Shortly before King Jaffe's passing he has a funeral that he attends himself. At this funeral what R&B groups sing the song "Whatta King" that is a parody of their 1993 collaboration of the song "Whatta Man"?

Answer: Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue

King Jaffe's funeral is quite the spectacle with Morgan Freeman giving his eulogy and Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue jamming to "Whatta King". The song "What a Man" was written by Dave Crawford and first performed by Linda Lyndell in 1968. However, the 1993 version retitled "Whatta Man" by Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue was the first version to reach the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 where it peaked at #3.

The song "Whatta King" in "Coming 2 America" had the same familiar beat as "Whatta Man" with some of the lyrics changed.
4. Seeking to find his son, King Akeem enters a barbershop and is informed that his son is doing what for a St. John's basketball game?

Answer: Scalping tickets

After King Akeem announces that he is going back to America to find his son a transition occurs showing his son, Lavelle Junson, at a job interview. He walks out after the interviewer makes prejudicial statements about Lavelle's family and upbringing. Lavelle then goes back to assisting his uncle by scalping tickets at a St. John's basketball game to make money.

While reselling tickets at higher prices (scalping) isn't technically illegal in the state of New York you are not supposed to do it within 1,500 feet of the venue.
5. After the death of King Jaffe, General Izzi of Nexdoria seeks to overthrow Akeem. What prominent actor and martial artist played the role of General Izzi from the country of Nexdoria?

Answer: Wesley Snipes

Prior to King Jaffe's death General Izzi visited Akeem to offer his son to marry Akeem's eldest daughter but Akeem declined. Thirty years prior Akeem had slighted Izzi's sister by breaking off their engagement to be married so General Izzi had several reasons to be upset with Akeem.

General Izzi was played by Wesley Snipes who has earned black belts in the martial arts of both Shotokan Karate and Hapkido. As an actor Snipes is known for playing the title vampire hunter in the "Blade" film trilogy (1998-2004). Other popular roles by Snipes included Syd Deane in "White Men Can't Jump" (1992), Simon Phoenix in "Demolition Man" (1993) and Doctor Death in "The Expendables 3" (2014).
6. Once back in Zamunda Lavelle must go through the 'Princely Test' that involved acts of culture, critical thinking and courage. What animal related task was the final act of courage?

Answer: Trimming whiskers off a lion

Prior to the acts of courage Lavelle learned King Akeem's royal walk that involved clenching the backside, putting shoulders back, keeping the chin up, sucking the stomach in and moving slowly with a 'regal gait'. Lavelle also learned about the prior kings of Zamunda. King Akeem tells Lavelle that he was able to trim whiskers off a lion on his first attempt but his advisor Semmi corrects him letting Lavelle know this was not the case. Akeem's oldest daughter Meeka helps Lavelle prepare for his encounter with the lion in which he built an enclosure to shield himself from the lion.
7. While in Zamunda Lavelle falls in love with Mirembe. What role at the palace did Marimbe have?

Answer: Royal groomer

Lavelle meets Mirembe after other members of the royal staff give him his first royal bath. Mirembe gives him a haircut and they both agree that the tradition of a long princely braid at the back of the head should be eliminated. She convinces him to be himself and she nicknames him the 'Prince from Queens'.
8. Lavelle is arranged to marry General Izzi's daughter Bopoto. However, at a royal party when he shares a dance and talks to her he realizes that they cannot connect emotionally. What response did Bopoto have to the question "What is your favorite movie?" that baffled Lavelle?

Answer: Whatever is your favorite movie.

To questions about hobbies, starting a business and favorite movie Bopoto responded to Lavelle that her answer is whatever he desires. Lavelle pushes her but she responds that she just wants to be his wife and make him happy. These answers are in stark contrast to his conversations with Mirembe where she tells him that she wants to open her own barbershop and that her favorite movies are the "Barbershop" films.
9. Prince Lavelle and Mirembe flee to America to get married in Lavelle's hometown. Who interrupts the wedding ceremony at the Church of Holy Jubilation?

Answer: King Akeem

Lavelle's uncle Reem Junson found the Church of Holy Jubilation for the wedding because it was the cheapest that he could find in Queens on a Tuesday afternoon. It was a rundown place and right as Reverend Brown (one of Arsenio Hall's four roles) was about to say the vows King Akeem interrupts. Eventually Lavelle and Akeem agree that love is the most important part of a marriage and the wedding should continue.

However, Mirembe calls off the wedding in Queens so that they can get married at the royal palace in Zamunda.
10. At Lavelle and Mirembe's wedding King Akeem thanks his eldest daughter Meeka for watching over while he was in America. What does he then tell her that he has issued a royal decree for?

Answer: Eliminating the stipulation that the ruler of Zamunda must be male

Meeka had been training since she was a young girl to be the ruler of Zamunda. While she knew that the laws stipulated that the ruler must be male she was confident that when her idealistic father Akeem was king he would change it to allow a queen to rule as well.

However, once Akeem learned that he had a son and he passed the 'Princely Tests' he changed his mind and went with the hundreds of years of tradition and he named Lavelle as his successor. Even so, Lavelle did not desire to be king and he agreed to his appointment as ambassador to America after Akeem decreed that his daughter Meeka would be his successor and the first ruling queen of Zamunda.
