Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Martin Scorsese wasn't the first director who used Robert de Niro in more than one film. In fact, Bob's first role worth mentioning was one of three he made with Brian De Palma. This one was in 1968. What was the title?

Answer: Greetings

De Niro played Jon Rubin, an aspiring filmmaker and Peeping Tom. Keep your blinds closed if you live in HIS neighborhood!
2. De Niro's second De Palma film was made in 1969. Bobby had a comic role as one of two guys who first try to prevent their friend from getting married, then later try to talk him into it. What was the title of this pretty-much-forgotten movie?

Answer: The Wedding Party

Bob showed his comic side early on, but few directors have made use of it.
3. De Niro played the same character in two movies, "Analyze This" and "Analyze That", but he also did the same thing early in his career. In his third de Palma film, he played a character he had done in an earlier De Palma movie. In what two films did he play the role of Jon Rubin?

Answer: "Greetings" and "Hi, Mom"

Bob played Jon Rubin in both films, made in 1968 and 1970. In the first one, he was the aforementioned aspiring filmmaker and Peeping Tom. In the second, he's a Viet Nam vet who's filming his neighbors through their windows. I told you to watch out for this guy! Didn't I? Hey, I'm talking to you! I've been hearin' things about you, so you better watch yourself!
4. Kate "Ma" Barker was a legend of crime in the 1920s and 30s. In 1970, Roger Corman made a movie about her, and he cast de Niro as one of her sociopathic sons. What was the movie's title?

Answer: Bloody Mama

In true Corman style, the movie's tagline was "The family that slays together stays together". Words of wisdom!
5. On the telecast of the AFI Tribute, James Woods jokingly said that De Niro "sucks" as an actor, and then he introduced a film clip that showed Bob as a gypsy cab driver, and the dialog and acting were (let's be kind) not up to his usual standard. What was the title of this cinematic classic?

Answer: Jennifer on My Mind

Bob got the part of Mardigian, who says he wears a bandana because he's a gypsy cab driver! Noel Black directed this 1971 classic, with screenplay by Erich Segal, author of "Love Story".
6. In 1971, James Goldstone filmed a Jimmy Breslin novel about organized crime in which Robert had fifth billing. What was the title?

Answer: The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight

Breslin created a comic bunch of hoods who never could get it right. Jerry Ohrbach had top billing as Kid Sally Palumbo. De Niro was Mario Trantino.
7. So far, Bob had not gotten a lot of attention from the critics, and his name was not well known to the movie-going public, but in 1973 he had a co-starring role in a movie that would really jump-start his career. What was the title of this sports film?

Answer: Bang the Drum Slowly

Robert played somewhat-mentally-challenged major league catcher Bruce Pearson, who had cancer. He had second billing to Michael Moriarty as his pitcher friend, but his portrayal made him stand out. Surprisingly, this film was not mentioned at the tribute, and Moriarty did not appear.
8. In 1973, De Niro made his first appearance in a Martin Scorsese film, and he got his first top billing as well. What was the title of this film?

Answer: Mean Streets

These were the streets of New York's Little Italy. De Niro played John "Johnny Boy" Civello, who reminded many of real-life mob figure "Crazy" Joe Gallo. Second billing went to Harvey Keitel as Charlie Cappa.
9. In 1974, Bob stepped up quite a bit with a role that would land him his first Oscar, this time as Supporting Actor. This was also the first film where he appeared with Al Pacino. What was its title?

Answer: The Godfather: Part II

Francis Ford Coppola directed this classic, the first sequel to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Some think it's even better than "The Godfather". Two good trivia points here: What character was played by both Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro? Answer: Don Vito Corleone. Robert played him as a young man. Also, in what movie does De Niro play Al Pacino's father? Answer: "Godfather II". De Niro is 3 years younger than Pacino, but he plays the father of infant Michael Corleone, played by Pacino as a man.

The two therefore had no scenes together. That wouldn't happen until "Heat" (1995).
10. Robert's next picture after his Oscar was in 1976. He played Travis Bickle. What was the movie?

Answer: Taxi Driver

Travis was a very memorable character indeed, especially in his "You talkin' to me?" scene. Travis had a crush on nice girl Cybill Shepherd. He got a date with her and took her to a porn movie! He didn't get a lot of dates after that! In our next segment: The Middle Years.
