Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what time of the year does the first third of the movie take place?

Answer: Autumn

It must be fall, because the friends are hunting, and because football is being shown on TV in the bar just before the wedding.

The football game is between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers. During the 1968-75 period covered by the film, all games between those two teams were played on Sundays. At the reception, Michael says they leave for Vietnam on "Monday" - and the friends have one last hunting trip the day after the wedding. So the timing of the wedding, hunt, and Vietnam departure isn't exactly correct.

Details, details.
2. Why does Michael have so little respect for Stan?

Answer: Because Stan is unprepared and often immature

Mike is a man of few words and always in control. By contrast, in the first hunting trip, Stan shows up still in his wedding tuxedo, with no thermal socks or boots. Saying that he's bailed Stan out too many times in the past, Mike refuses to let Stan use his. Later, after returning from Vietnam, he gets extremely angry when Stan cavalierly points a gun at one of their friends.
3. What Frankie Valli song is used in the movie?

Answer: Can't Take My Eyes Off of You

Valli's 1967 hit "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" is used memorably during the less than three minutes of the movie where it can be heard. It's on the jukebox in the bar just before the wedding, as the men shoot pool, drink, and talk. When Steve's mother shows up and drags him away, the men serenade her with the "I want to hold you so much" line. Later at the reception, the song is playing in the background as Mike asks Nick's girlfriend Linda to dance.
4. How does the Green Beret, who has returned from Vietnam, react to Michael and his friends?

Answer: Mostly ignores them and quietly curses

At the reception, the friends find a Green Beret alone at the bar, buy him a drink, and ask him what it's like in Vietnam. He looks past them or stares straight ahead and just curses "it" - whatever "it" is. After failing to start a conversation with him, they eventually return to the reception.
5. Which is true about Chuck Aspegren, whose portrayal of Axel in "The Deer Hunter" was his first and last film role?

Answer: He was a steelworker in real life.

Aspegren was a real-life steelworker, who showed Robert DeNiro and the film crew around the Gary, Indiana steel mill where he worked. DeNiro found him to be such a natural that he was offered the role of Axel - which called on him to do little more than be crude and frequently curse.

Actor John Cazale, who played Stan, was extremely ill with bone cancer during the shooting, requiring all his scenes to be filmed first, and he passed away shortly after filming was completed.
6. What happens at the wedding reception, to foreshadow trouble ahead?

Answer: The bride spills wine on her dress.

Near the end of their reception, Steven and Angela are given a large double-cupped goblet to drink from, being told that if they don't spill a drop, it will mean good luck for the rest of their lives. Unseen by the couple or their guests, some drops of the red wine fall onto her dress.
7. On the hunting trip, Michael holds up a bullet and says "This is" something. What does he say it is?

Answer: This

"Stanley, see this?" Michael says, frustrated that his friend came on a hunting trip unprepared. "This is this. This ain't somethin' else. This is this. From now on, you're on your own."
8. How does Steve break his legs in Vietnam?

Answer: Falling from a helicopter

Steven, Nick, and Michael are rescued from the POW camp by helicopter and hold on to the landing skids as it flies through the air. Steven, weakened, lets go and falls into a river, breaking his legs. Michael lets go as well, falling into the water to rescue his friend.
9. When asked by the doctor, what kind of name does Nick say he has?

Answer: American

"Chevotarevich - is that a Russian name?" asks the military doctor. "No," replies Nick, "It's American." Nick later breaks down when being asked about his parents.
10. In the movie's final scene, what do Nick's friends do?

Answer: Drink a toast to him

After Nick's funeral, they gather for breakfast. After singing "God Bless America". they raise their glasses in a toast to their friend, the image freezes on the screen, and the scene fades to the closing credits.
