Idgie is angry that people make fun of her (especially her other brother, Julian). Buddy tells her that all the oysters in the ocean were the same until God put a piece of sand in one of them and it made a beautiful pearl. This story cheers her up and helps to show that she is a unique person.

Buddy also tells Idgie a story pertaining to ducks later in the movie. Idgie in turn tells this story to Smokey Lonesome and Ruth Jamison later in the film.

Evelyn loves candy bars and is addicted to them. She says she hides 10 or 11 candy bars all over her house. Evelyn is also seen munching on Cracker Jack during one of her scenes with Ninny.

Evelyn shares her Krispy Kreme doughnuts with Ninny, thus leading to another installment of her story which develops the friendship between Ruth Jamison and Idgie. Also, this scene develops the friendship between Ninny and Evelyn. Throughout the entire film, each scene shared by Evelyn and Ninny involves a food of some kind... usually something sweet.

Ruth is played by Mary-Louise Parker. The adult Idgie Threadgoode is played by Mary Stuart Masterson.

Evelyn's transformation into a healthier person begins after she repeatedly crashes her car in the Winn Dixie parking lot. She begins eating raw vegetables like baby carrots and celery, which she refers to as "crudites".

The children run away happily to the cafe. At this point, Ruth says that her father always said there was a separate God for children. Buddy, of course, is named after Idgie's brother. Idgie insists on calling Buddy Jr. "Stump" after this incident.

The closing shot is of the front of the Whistle Stop Cafe. We can see such advertisements as 7-UP, Frostie Old Fashion Root Beer, and (of course) 'Fried Green Tomatoes Served Hot'.
