Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the film "The Last House on the Left" (1972), where were Mari and Phyllis going to celebrate Mari's birthday?

Answer: The girls were headed to a concert.

Mari's parent did not like the fact their daughter was friends with Phyllis. They thought Phyllis was a bad influence on their daughter. They reluctantly allowed Mari to go with Phyllis to the concert. The girls are soon meet by a young stranger, Junior. They all head back to Junior's motel room to party. Everything was going great until Junior's dad, Krug showed up. Krug along with his cronies, Sadie and Weasel, kidnapped and assaulted the girls. Junior did not take part in any of the wrong doing to Mari or Phyllis. At one point in the film, Krug tried to make his son assault Mari. Both girls managed to escape the psychopaths, but Phyllis was caught and killed. Mari managed to get to the river, but was shot and wounded by Krug. She eventually made it home, but died in the presence of her parents.

Mari was played by Sandra Cassel and Phyllis by Lucy Grantham. This film was the first film Wes Craven directed. The film was released in 1972. Sean S. Cunningham was the producer on the film. Sean was also the director of my favorite film, "Friday the 13th". The first time I saw this film, I was really freaked out by the character Sadie. Jeramie Rain, who played Sadie, was way over the top. The film seemed so real to me just because Sadie enjoyed torturing the girls immensely.
2. In the 1996 film "Scream", what did Sidney use to kill Stu?

Answer: Sidney killed Stu by dropping a television on his head.

Sidney had just learned that Stu and Billy, her boyfriend, had killed her mother one year ago to the date. The boys had developed a plot to kill everyone and then appear as the sole survivors. Sidney escaped while Billy and Stu argued. Stu found Sidney and chased her into the living room. Stu was knocked to the floor and Sidney dropped the television on his head.

Neve Campbell played the role of Sidney Prescott. Matthew Lillard played the role of Stu. Matthew in my opinion was a great choice for the role; he played a psycho killer wonderfully. This was not the first time he played a horror/comedy role. He played the role of Chip Sutphin in the 1994 John Waters film, "Serial Mom". Neve was probably best known at the time for her role on "Party of Five". She played the role of Julia Salinger. "Scream" was the 21st film directed by Wes Craven. It was released in 1996 and was a great success for Wes. He had a cameo in the film; he played Fred the janitor. He wore a red and green stripped sweater reminiscent of the one Freddy Krueger wore in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" films.
3. What did Bug and Leah's dad, Abel, make for them in the film "My Soul to Take"?

Answer: Abel made a rocking horse for Bug and a doll house for Leah.

We first saw Abel in the basement; he was placing the finishing touches on the horse for Bug. Abel's wife came down to the basement and asked him to come upstairs and watch the news with her. She told Abel it was too scary for her to watch alone. The news that night featured a story on the serial killer "The Riverton Ripper". He had been murdering people in the area and was caught on camera killing someone. The camera picked up the image of the Ripper's weapon, a knife. Before Abel went upstairs, he found the knife under his work bench. It was later disclosed that Abel suffered from multiple personalities. The personality that killed the people overtook Abel and murdered his wife. He then went to the room of his young daughter, Leah. We saw the enormous doll house that Abel made for his daughter. Abel attempted to kill his daughter, but was stopped by the police.

"My Soul to Take" was released in 2010. I must admit the first time I saw it, I did not understand the plot. It was not until I purchased it on DVD that I understood. All of Abel's personalities transferred to the newborns the night he died. As each youth died, their souls and their traits were transferred to Bug. It was finally revealed at the end that Alex, Bug's best friend, had the killer personality. Bug stabbed Alex with a large knife from the kitchen. Max Thieriot played the role of Bug. Leah was played by Emily Meade. Raul Esparza played the role of Abel. Wes Craven served as both writer and director on this film. This was Wes's 29th film.
4. In the 1977 film "The Hills Have Eyes", who saved Katy from the cannibals?

Answer: Ruby

Ruby, the daughter of Papa Jupiter, was the one to save baby Katy. She had taken Katy moments before her family was going to kill the baby. Ruby had wrapped a piglet in a blanket and placed it in the back of a pickup truck. The cannibals found the piglet and were enraged. Ruby ran into the hills to escape her brother, Mars. Katy's father, Doug, chased after both Ruby and Mars to get his daughter back. Doug killed Mars by stabbing him several times.

I had put off watching this film for several years. I put it off for so long because it reminded me immensely of Zombie movies which I dislike. I finally broke down and saw it. I was pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed the film immensely. I was thrilled when the male dog, Beast, got revenge on several of the cannibals. His female companion, Beauty had been killed by the cannibals. The film also featured one of my favorite performers, Dee Wallace. She played the role of the oldest daughter, Lynn. She was married to Doug and was the mother of Katy. She was unfortunately one of the victims in the film. Wes Craven directed this and the 1985 sequel. "The Hills Have Eyes" was the first quiz I authored.
5. Alfred Hitchcock was famous for having cameos in his film. Peter Jackson appeared in "The Lord of the Rings". What film directed by Wes Craven featured a significant part for its director?

Answer: Wes Craven's New Nightmare

This 1994 film brought back Freddy Krueger. He was much darker in this film. He no longer had the sense of humor he had in previous films. It also brought back the heroine from the first and third films. In the film, Heather Langenkamp played herself. She had lost her husband to what she thought was a traffic accident. Her son, Dylan, was starting to act strange. He did not like to sleep in his bed unless his stuffed dinosaur, Rex, was at the foot of his bed. Dylan told his mom that Rex protected him from his dreams. Heather realized Freddy had returned and was responsible for all her recent misfortunes. She had a meeting with Wes to discuss her fears. Wes and Heather discussed that Wes dreamt the scenes the night before and would write them down later.

Wes has had several cameos in his films, but they were brief. In this film, he played a major part. Wes was the vessel Freddy used to make his actions possible. This was one of my favorite horror films of the 1990s. It was like a reunion; it brought back several of the cast members from the first film. John Saxon came back as himself, but as the movie progressed he slipped into the role of Nancy's dad.
6. David Arquette reprised his role of Deputy Sheriff Dewey Riley in "Scream 2". Who was the first person to recognize Dewey in the film?

Answer: Sidney

Sidney and Randy, along with some of their friends, were talking about the murders the night before. The murders had occurred during the performance of the movie "Stab". "Stab" was based on the experiences that both Randy and Sidney had lived through. Sidney looked across the lawn of her college and saw Dewey. He was lost and looking around. They were both glad to see one another and embraced. Dewey was soon reunited with Gale. The two exchanged words over Gale's depiction of Dewey in her book. Gale and Dewey would soon rekindle their romance as they tried to find the killer. Dewey was stabbed while Gale looked in horror. It appeared as if the killer had succeeded this time. Later on in the film, we found out that Dewey had survived the attack.

David has played the role of Dewey four times in all the "Scream" films. He brought comedy to the films that in my opinion really escalated the films. Wes directed this sequel as well as the other installments of the film series. I enjoyed the film and the actors. The actors are what made the movie for me. They were all likable and I found myself caring about them. I was especially upset when Randy was killed. The film was released in 1997.
7. What type of monster was the film "Cursed" based on?

Answer: Werewolf

The film revolved around brother and sister, Jimmy and Ellie Myers. The two were attacked by what they believed was a dog or a wolf. They soon started to display the traits of a werewolf. Jimmy was the first to realize it, but his sister was not convinced. Ellie soon came around when she saw Jimmy burned by a silver cake server. Jimmy and Ellie tried to find the werewolf who did this to them so they could destroy him. If the wolf was killed they would go back to normal. Ellie discovered that her boyfriend, Jimmy, was the one who attacked them. She managed to kill Jimmy by beheading him.

"Cursed" was directed by Wes Craven and was released in 2005. I really enjoyed the film because of the cast that Wes had picked. Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg played Ellie and Jimmy Meyers. Joshua Jackson played the role of Jimmy, Ellie's boyfriend. I always thought the film should have been a bigger hit for Wes. I really enjoyed the way the film progressed. The action and the effects were great as well.
8. In the 1989 film "Shocker", what was the profession of the killer?

Answer: Television repairman

Horace Pinker was the name of the killer in the film. He murdered the parents and brother of Jonathan Parker. He was captured and sentenced to death before he was able to kill Jonathan. Pinker was executed, but came back as pure electricity. He was able to enter his potential victim's home through electrical devices. He mostly traveled through televisions as he was a television repairman. Jonathan was able to bring back Pinker in human form and defeated him. Pinker was arrested and he swore revenge on Jonathan.

I remember the film was very highly promoted right before it was released. It seemed as though there was a commercial constantly running. The film turned out to be a failure at the box office. I myself didn't see it until it was released on VHS. I found the film to be ok. It was definitely not worthy of the hype that surrounded it. I also recall that it was intended to be a franchise, but since it was considered a poor performer it did not get a sequel. Mitch Pileggi played the role of Horace Pinker. It was revealed during the film that Pinker was actually the father of Jonathan. Jonathan had shot his father while he murdered his mother. Jonathan was played by Peter Berg. Wes Craven was the writer, director, and one of the producers of the film.
9. In the 1991 film "The People Under the Stairs", what was Poindexter's nickname?

Answer: Fool

Poindexter was desperate for money; his family was being evicted from their apartment. Also, his mother was gravely ill and required surgery. Fool, as everyone called Poindexter, planned a robbery of a wealthy home. Fool got into the house and discovered a number of atrocities were going on there. The most disturbing was the people who were in the basement in a caged area. It was later revealed that the people were once the children of the owners. The owners had placed them in the basement for breaking their rules. Fool befriended their daughter, Alice, and helped her escape from her captors. The parents of Alice were known as Mother and Father. Both parents were killed at the end of the film.

Poindexter Williams was played by Brandon Adams. This film was apparently based on a true story. A father had chained his daughter under the stairs to stop her from getting in trouble. I don't know if that was fact or fiction. The film was released in 1991 and was considered a success. The over the top antics of the parents brought a comedic note to the film. This film was written and directed by Wes Craven.
10. In the 2009 remake of the film "The Last House on the Left", how was Wes involved with the film?

Answer: Executive Producer

Wes originally directed and wrote the original 1972 film. He was involved with the 2009 remake as producer. The remake stayed pretty consistent with the original film. It told the story of two young girls, Mari and Paige. The girls were hanging out when they met a young stranger, Justin. The teenagers were having a good time when Justin's dad showed up. Paige was killed by Krug and his gang. Mari managed to escape and get home. Her father and mother discovered her almost dead. The Collingwoods hid their daughter and then went about getting revenge on their daughter's tormentors. The kill scenes were much more graphic in the 2009 film. John Collingwood tied Krug to a table and placed his head in a microwave.

I preferred the original to the remake only because the original seemed real. Both movies were good, but the first seemed more realistic. The film was released in 2009. Wes was listed as Executive Producer on the film.
