Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie "Inferno" 2016 is based on a 2013 novel of the same name. Who wrote the novel?

Answer: Dan Brown

The novel "Inferno" was published in 2013 and was the fourth in the Robert Langdon series. Ron Howard directed the film adaptation. Tom Hanks returned in the role of Robert Langdon and Felicity Jones played Dr Sienna Brooks.
2. In the beginning of the film, the main character, Robert Langdon, wakes up in a hospital after a head trauma. He thinks that he is at home in Boston but where is he actually?

Answer: Florence

Professor Langdon regains consciousness in a hospital room that he thinks is Mass General Hospital in Boston, however he looks out of his hospital room window and recognizes the skyline as Florence, Italy. His physician, Dr Sienna Brooks, has to help him escape the hospital because someone dressed as a police officer soon arrives and kills an employee and is looking for him.
3. Langdon goes through his pockets at Dr Brooks' apartment and finds a projection device. What does the projection depict?

Answer: Hell

The device projects an image of of Sandro Botticelli's "Map of Hell", which is an illustration based on "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri. This 14th century manuscript defines Hell as we know it today. Hidden in the illustration are several alterations from the original that leads him to believe that he needs to examine a work of art at Palazzo Vecchio.

The message tells him to seek and find.
4. Langdon realizes that his first clue is located at the Palazzo Vecchio (a former palace that now serves as the Florence City Hall). What type of work is the message hidden in?

Answer: A fresco

Fresco is a technique for paining murals in which the pigment is mixed with water and added to fresh plaster. This resulting in the painting actually becoming a part of the wall. The clue is found written on a banner in the corner of the mural. This clue tells him to look through the eyes of death, which leads him to another area of the building for his next clue.
5. Professor Langdon and Dr Brooks are instructed to "look through the eyes of death" for their next clue. What do they look for?

Answer: Dante's death mask

In the Middle Ages a death mask would be made of royalty or other notable people at the time of their death by making a plaster or wax impression of their face. It would them be used in the funeral ceremony and later displayed somewhere such as a library or university.

They find out that the mask is owned by Bertrand Zobrist and is on loan to the museum. When they arrive at the exhibit they find that the mask is not there.
6. Langdon and Brooks find out that an artifact they are looking for is missing from the museum. When the CCTV footage is reviewed it is revealed that it was stolen. Who stole it?

Answer: Robert Langdon and Ignazio Busoni

The CCTV footage show that Langdon and his friend Ignazio stole Dante's Death mask on their previous visit the day before. Of course at the time the footage is reviewed Langdon is still suffering from retrograde amnesia and has no recollection of the incident. The police arrive just as this discovery is made which give Langdon and Brooks time to escape.
7. We find out that the World Health Organization (WHO) has been trailing Bertrand Zobrist for two years and suspect that he is planning to release the inferno virus soon and that Langdon may be able to help them discover the location of the virus before it is released. Why does he want to release a virus that will kill half of the world's population?

Answer: As a cure for overpopulation

We find out that Bertrand is a scientist who has concluded that the Earth's population is growing at an unsustainable rate and if something is not done humans will become extinct. He is obsessed with Dante and leaves clues related to him along the way and the WHO thinks that Professor Langdon can help them solve the clues and find the virus before it is released.
8. The trail of clues in Florence eventually tells them they must go to another city. What is their next watery destination?

Answer: Venice

The information of the back of Dante's death mask leads them to Venice. They consider Venice a good location to release the virus since people from every corner of the globe visit there. They visit St Mark's Basilica for their next clue but they find that the statues of the four horses were taken from Constantinople during the fourth crusade in 1204, so they realize that they are in the wrong place.
9. While at St Mark's Basilica, they realize that the real target city is Istanbul. It is here that we also learn that Dr Brooks isn't who she claims to be and is actually Zobrist's former lover and wants the virus released. What event is to be the target for the release of the virus?

Answer: Summer Solstice Concert

The Summer Solstice Concert is being held in the underground cisterns that are no longer used to supply water to the city. The clue written on the back of Dante's Death mask mentions a lagoon that does not reflect the stars. Since the cistern is underground, it does not reflect the stars and the virus is found at the last minute and contained.
10. At the end of the film we learn that Robert Langdon and Elizabeth Sinskey (who is heading up the WHO investigation) once were involved in a relationship and she was actually with him when he was kidnapped. Langdon lost something in the attack and Sinskey returns it at the end of the movie. What does she return to Langdon?

Answer: His Mickey Mouse watch

Langdon's parents gave him the watch and he is very sentimental about it. It is mentioned in the other Robert Langdon novels also. We see the watch being torn off and broke in a flashback scene that shows Langdon's kidnapping and it also shows Sinskey recovering the watch.
