Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1963, Stanley Kramer produced a movie which can be watched over and over due to the staggering number of comedians and comedy actors in the cast and the scope of the action. In one opening scene, a character named 'Smiler' Grogan speeds down a desert highway, evading the police. In attempting to pass a number of cars, he loses control and crashes down a steep embankment. Grogan is played by what veteran movie and TV comedian? Good night, Mrs. Calabash, where ever you are.

Answer: Jimmy Durante

The occupants of the four passed autos somewhat reluctantly go to his side. Badly injured, Grogan describes a large hidden cache of money ($350,000), a location (Santa Rosita State Park) and the "Big W". Then, he literally 'kicks the bucket'. J. Russell Finch, (Milton Berle) describes the accident to the police thusly- "He just sailed right out there, boy! Just sailed right out there!" The passengers of the four autos elect not to tell the police about Grogan's last words.

The Smiler Grogan part was originally to be played by Buster Keaton, but he wound up playing Jimmy the Crook who later tries to help Spencer Tracy (Captain Culpepper) escape with the money.
2. J. Russell Finch (Berle), his wife Emmaline, (Dorothy Provine) and her hyper-critical mother agree to go on a chase to reach the money first, after the other participants cannot agree on splitting the money fairly. Their quest turns into a race to reach Santa Rosita and the money. Finch's mother-in-law is played by what Broadway and movie star?

Answer: Ethel Merman

Merman played the part to the hilt, loudly and carpingly. She felt her son-in-law was not destined to become a success at anything and constantly let him know it. In one scene, as she is hitting Berle with a purse, she actually injured him, putting a good sized knot on his head. Once again, Merman was not originally chosen for the part.

It was written as a father-in-law with Groucho Marx in mind. But Marx wanted too much money, and it was re-written and given to Merman. A happy circumstance, as she was wonderful in the part.
3. In an attempt to get ahead of the others, Melville Crump (Sid Caesar) and his wife Monica (Edie Adams) charter an airplane, only to find that it's a World War I biplane which can't fly as fast as a modern automobile can go. Who played the pilot of this antique?

Answer: Ben Blue

Blue's role was small but hilarious as the deadpan flyer. His plane very nearly fell apart during the flight, but he managed to deliver his passengers as promised. Edie Adams was the wife of Ernie Kovacs, who had lost his life in an auto accident shortly before filming began on the movie. In fact, he was originally chosen for the part of Melville Crump.
4. Ding Bell (Mickey Rooney) and his partner Benjy Benjamin (Buddy Hackett) are two more participants in the race to reach the money. They, too, want to hire a pilot to fly them to Santa Rosita, but their plans, too, go somewhat astray. They find a pilot and plane, but there is something wrong with the pilot, played by whom?

Answer: Jim Backus

The problem is that the pilot is gloriously hung over and sleeping it off atop a pool table. Not to be deterred, Bell and Benjamin stand him in a shower and pour coffee into him. He eventually sobers up enough to agree to fly them to their destination, but once in the air, proceeds to get hammered tight again, resulting in Benjamin having to fly and land the plane with the expected hilarity.
5. Meanwhile, back on the road, Otto Meyer (Phil Silvers) needs to fix a tire at a desert filling station. Here he has a run-in with Lenny Pike (Jonathan Winters, in his first screen appearance). The two attendants think Lenny is mad. Afraid of his violent temper, they get him tied up with duct tape. One of the attendants was played by Marvin Kaplan (Irwin). Who played his partner (Ray)?

Answer: Arnold Stang

The fight is a classic in that, in true comedy style, the station and all its contents are completely destroyed at its end. Pike drives off in the station's tow truck. Ray and Irwin survey the damage and shrug. Actually, Winters was mistakenly left tied up during a lunch break. None too happy about it, he threatened Stang and Kaplan, but nothing came of it.
6. Melville Crump and wife Monica have landed and caught a cab to take them to the park. But they decide to stop first at a hardware store and buy a shovel and spade for digging up the buried money. Who was the cab driver that delivered them?

Answer: Leo Gorcey

Crump and his wife enter the hardware near closing time and wind up getting themselves locked the the basement. This may be the funniest segment of the movie and Caesar is certainly at his frenetic best as he tries to get himself and his wife out. This involves sledge hammers, blowtorches, using a lift truck as a ram, and finally dynamiting a wall adjacent to a Chinese laundry.

This was Gorcey's first appearance on film since 1956, and consisted of two lines. The film was the last appearance for Zasu Pitts, who played the switchboard operator, as she passed away shortly after the picture was completed.
7. At the Police Station, the race to the money is being tracked by all hands. Captain Culpepper (Spencer Tracy) accidentally sails his hat through an open window onto the street, where it is deliberately crushed by a passing automobile. Do you remember who was driving the car?

Answer: Jerry Lewis

Lewis had no lines in the film; this was his only scene. He laughed maniacally as he drove over the hat, much to the chagrin of Captain Culpepper. Kramer had asked every comedian he could think of to appear, including Stan Laurel, who refused. When Oliver Hardy died, Laurel made a vow never to appear in another movie.

It was a promise kept. Don Rickles was among the few not asked, a fact which reportedly upset him.
8. With the aid of two cab drivers (Peter Falk and Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson) the treasure hunters arrive at the park at the same time. The money is buried beneath the 'Big W', but what is the 'Big W'?

Answer: Four palm trees grown in such a way as to form a "W"

Santa Rosita State park does not actually exist. The movie was shot on a private estate. The trees, unfortunately, are no longer there; storms and time have destroyed them.
9. They find the money, only to discover that the police (Captain Culpepper) are present. Culpepper convinces the group to go to the Police Station and turn themselves in, rather than being arrested. "It will go easier on you that way," he says. The policeman, of course, plans to abscond with the money. Why?

Answer: He has been cheated out of his pension

They agree to go, but soon discover that they've been duped. A chase follows and they trap Culpepper in an abandoned building. Tracy was quite ill with diabetes and emphysema during the making of this film; his scenes were shot in a total of nine days. A double was used in many of the scenes in which he had to run, especially in the chase up the stairs.
10. Who wound up with all the money?

Answer: No one

During the group's chase of Captain Culpepper, he wound up on the roof of the building, then tried to get away by using the fire escape. The entire lot of them followed, causing the fire escape to collapse. Wrestling for the bag of money caused it to open, and the money went flying into space, falling to the waiting crowd below.

They were all hospitalized, and as the movie ended, awaited justice.
