Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kurt Russell played a supporting role in a film that was released in 1968. It is unlikely he knew at the time the actress, Goldie Hawn, who played the minor part which was billed as "giggly girl" in that same film, would later become his long-time life partner. Which of his movies was it with the backdrop of the 1888 U.S. Presidential elections?

Answer: The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band

"The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band" was a 1968 release from Walt Disney Productions. It paired two stars, Lesley Ann Warren and John Davidson, who were previously featured together in the (also) successful film, "The Happiest Millionaire" (1967). Both Russell and Hawn have mentioned that during the filming of "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band" they noticed each other but did not pursue any romantic relationship - then.

They both have commented at the time their ages seem to be a significant difference for a relationship; in 1968, Goldie Hawn was 21, Kurt Russell was 16.

It would appear they changed their minds some years later.
2. The Hollywood adage "never work with children or animals" has some basis of good advice but sometimes it can be a recipe for success. Kurt Russell certainly seemed to shine as he shared the spotlight with a pet chimp in this 1971 release from Walt Disney Productions. What movie?

Answer: The Barefoot Executive

"The Barefoot Executive" was considered typical for movies produced by Walt Disney Productions in the mid-twentieth century - it was a light-hearted comedy designed to be appreciated and enjoyed by children yet palatable enough to be of interest to adults. Kurt Russell played the leading role in this movie and for the most part his work was well received.

The movie continued to be popular as a television re-run for Disney for many years. "The Barefoot Executive" also starred Wally Cox, Heather North, Joe Flynn and John Ritter.

It was John Ritter's film debut and Wally Cox's last movie to be released.
3. The 1980 release of the movie "Used Cars" featured Kurt Russell in an R-rated film and the satirical content was definitely geared toward an adult audience. It was the first time Kurt Russell worked with the film's director. Who was this director who later made such favorites as "Romancing the Stone" (1984), "Back to the Future" (1985) and "Forrest Gump" (1994) possible for us?

Answer: Robert Zemeckis

Robert Zemeckis was given credit as both writer and director of "Used Cars", although co-writing credit was also given to Bob Gale. The movie featured a style of comedy that has been described as "black comedy", "cynical humor" and (as in the question) "satirical"; much about that style became a trademark for Robert Zemeckis. "Used Cars" did well at the box office during its initial release but not as well as had been anticipated.

In retrospect, it has been noted the studio (Columbia Pictures) rushed the release of "Used Cars" which prevented necessary marketing for it and gave it a release date very close to that of the hugely popular movie, "Airplane" (1980) - both movies would most likely have appealed to a similar audience. For many years, "Used Cars" was the only movie from Robert Zemeckis to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America.
4. Moviegoers saw Kurt Russell in one of his most unforgettable roles - as S.D. "Snake" Plissken - when he starred in a John Carpenter directed film that was released in July 1981 (USA). What was the film with the tagline: "The world's greatest leader is a hostage in the most dangerous place on Earth. Now only the deadliest man alive can save him."?

Answer: Escape From New York

"Escape From New York" was only one of several very popular and very successful films that was directed by John Carpenter and that starred Kurt Russell. For many years after its 1981 release Kurt Russell would go on record as saying the movie was his favorite (of those with him in the starring role) and "Snake" Plissken had been his favorite character to play.

At the time of the film's release, Adrienne Barbeau, who played "Maggie" in the film, and John Carpenter were married, as were Kurt Russell and Season Hubley, who played The Girl in Chock Full o' Nuts in the movie.

A sequel for the film was released in 1996; it was "Escape From L.A." and, of course, starred Russell and was directed by John Carpenter.
5. Billed as a psychological thriller, this 1992 released film starred Kurt Russell, Madeleine Stowe and Ray Liotta. Although it was not a box office super-star all three artists were praised for their performance. What movie starred those three and gave us a glimpse at the sinister side of unrequited admiration?

Answer: Unlawful Entry

One movie poster showed the following tagline for "Unlawful Entry": "A man obsessed will do anything for love. A cop obsessed can get away with it." Ray Liotta was given a role which was perfect for him. He could play a psychopath as well as anyone in show business and the way he played the unstable/obsessed policeman who was in love with someone else's wife in this film was no exception.

The roles played by Stowe and Russell may have been more on the mundane side but they portrayed their "average citizens trapped in a situation they could not escape" parts to excellence.

Much of the filming of "Unlawful Entry" was done in and around Los Angeles, CA. The house (where Stowe and Russell's characters lived), the school (where Stowe's character taught) and the jail (where Liotta's character worked) were all actual places, as shown.
6. "Captain Ron" was a goof-ball comedy that premiered (in the USA) in the autumn of 1992. It starred Kurt Russell (as Captain Ron) and Mary Kay Place. While playing the lead character Russell was given most of the comedic responsibly. What Canadian-American actor - usually known for his comedic roles - played the more serious role opposite Russell?

Answer: Martin Short

By the early 1990s Martin Short was already well known for his comedy work both on television and in films. Short was a cast member of television's "Saturday Night Live" during its 1984-1985 season and, apparently, it was a symbiotic relationship. "SNL" was in desperate need of "new" talent and it was exactly what Short needed to boost his career. Soon after that year at "SNL", Short would enjoy a string of popular movies, including "Three Amigos" (1986), "Cross My Heart" (1987) and "Father of the Bride" (1991). "Captain Ron" was not considered to be a box office success and critics were quick to surmise it was because Russell had been cast in a comedic role opposite Short who played the more somber role.
7. This movie starring Kurt Russell was billed as an action thriller. It was released (in the USA) in the spring of 1996. Kurt Russell did not portray the President; he played an American intelligence analyst who advised the U.S. Army. What was this movie packed with as much "star power" as it was action and suspense?

Answer: Executive Decision

The plot of "Executive Decision" concerned the efforts of military unit of specialists accompanied by an intelligence analyst who was an expert in chemical weapons (played by Kurt Russell) as they attempted to thwart the intentions of highjackers who were aboard a commercial airliner.

The highjackers carried a "gas bomb" that if detonated could potentially annihilate millions of people. Those also seen in "Executive Decision" included: Steven Seagal, Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, Joe Morton, David Suchet, BD Wong, Len Cariou, Whip Hubley, Andreas Katsulas, Mary Ellen Trainor, Marla Maples, J.T. Walsh and Ingo Neuhaus. Three must know facts: (1) Although he may not have been qualified to fly a 747 (the commercial plane shown in the movie), Kurt Russell had earned his pilot's license and had FAA certification for several types of aircraft prior to being cast in the movie. (2) This was the first film for which Halle Berry would be paid $1 million.

She had initially refused to do the movie until that salary was offered to her. (3) At the time of the movie's release Marla Maples was married to the man who would become President of the United States - Donald Trump.
8. This movie was released in early 2001 (in the USA) and starred Kurt Russell, Kevin Costner, Courteney Cox and Christian Slater. It may be best remembered because many reviewers rated it so very bad. What was this film that was nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Actor, Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Couple at the 22nd Golden Raspberry Awards?

Answer: 3000 Miles to Graceland

It would have been hard to imagine that "3000 Miles to Graceland" would have ever been taken seriously - really. The plot was simple: A gang of acquainted (use of the word "friends", avoided here) ex-cons dress as Elvis impersonators when they plan to rob a casino (in Los Vegas) during Elvis convention week. What could have possibly derailed such a superlative plan? Come on! The movie was criticized for its shallowness, its violence, its language, its sexual content, for its predictability and for being unbelievable.

It probably was all of those - and more - but again what was the level of expectation? Take away trivia about the movie: (According to IMDb) Kurt Russell was the only one of the Elvis impersonators who had a part in "3000 Miles to Graceland" to have actually shared the screen with Elvis Presley. Kurt Russell had a role in "It Happened at the World's Fair" (1963), which starred Elvis.
9. The Kurt Russell movie "Dreamer" (2005) received a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Family Film. It was, generally, well received and appreciated by both critics and audiences. What competitive sport was the basis of the story in "Dreamer"?

Answer: Horse racing

The movie "Dreamer" was billed as "Inspired by a True Story" - the story of a thoroughbred race horse. Thoroughbred horse racing is the competition demonstrated in the well known races of the (in USA) Breeders Cup series (of races) and the horse races known as the Triple Crown - The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont Stakes.

In addition to Kurt Russell the movie, "Dreamer" featured Dakota Fanning, Kris Kristofferson and Elisabeth Shue. It was many of things movie goers crave from a family film - emotional, thoughtful, inspiring and, yes, predictable. Yet, who does not appreciate being reminded that dreams do come true?
10. In 2015 Kurt Russell joined an all-star cast to work with director Quentin Tarantino on a movie that was billed as an American western thriller crime drama mystery. Really. It was also billed as "The 8th film from Quentin Tarantino". What was this film set in the late 1800s, in Wyoming Territory?

Answer: The Hateful Eight

"The Hateful Eight" was also seen written as "The H8ful Eight" to greater emphasize the significance of the number 8. "The Hateful Eight" was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The eight characters were: The Bounty Hunter, The Hangman, The Prisoner, The Sheriff, The Mexican, The Little Man, The Cow Puncher and The Confederate.

They were played by: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. (Both lists are in corresponding order.) "The Hateful Eight" won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Score, recognizing the work of Ennio Morricone and proving Tarantino made a wise choice to use an original for this film.

It was the first time Tarantino had used an original score.
