Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alan Rickman played the role of Professor Snape in the movie adaptations of the "Harry Potter" book series. Snape is known to be Harry's least favorite teacher; what is his first name?

Answer: Severus

Severus Snape was formerly on the bad side - he was part of Lord Voldemort's group The Death Eaters, but shortly before Voldemort's downfall, Snape renounced the dark ways and became a double agent for Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts. Snape took up a teaching post in Hogwarts School, teaching Potions class. Albus, Filius, and Rubeus are names of other Hogwarts teachers; Profs Dumbledore, Flitwick, and Hagrid respectively.

Because Snape's character becomes more complex as the books unfold, Alan was given special information on his character from books yet unpublished by J.K. Rowling, to allow him to portray Snape better.
2. Alan starred in the 1988 film "Die Hard" as German-born terrorist Hans Gruber. How did Hans meet his death?

Answer: Falling from a window

Hans Gruber leads a group of terrorists to try to steal $640 million in bonds from Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. They take a group of partygoers in the building as hostages, including Holly, the estranged wife of NY Detective John McClane, who is there to try to reconcile with her.

Gruber is killed in the climax of the movie when McClane knocks him out of a window; however, he is caught on Holly's watch, and Gruber tries to pull Holly out after him. Luckily, McClane manages to unclasp Holly's watch and save her from falling. For this scene, director John McTiernan dropped Alan Rickman on the count of two instead of three to produce the look of genuine surprise when Gruber falls from the building.
3. In "Sense and Sensibility" (1995), Alan's character falls in love with Marianne Dashwood. Whom did he play?

Answer: Colonel Christopher Brandon

When Mrs Dashwood becomes widowed, and her husband's estate left to his son from a previous marriage, her cousin Sir John Middleton offers her a cottage on his estate called Barton Park. Here, one of her daughters, Marianne, meets Colonel Brandon; however, John Willoughby woos Marianne. Willoughby moves away to London after it is discovered he has gotten Brandon's ward pregnant.

Later, Colonel Brandon rescues Marianne after she becomes ill from being out in a torrential rain, and after she recovers, she falls in love with him and they become married.
4. Alan starred in the 2007 musical film "Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Barber Street" as the evil Judge Turpin. Why does Todd vow revenge on Turpin?

Answer: Turpin raped his wife, and has his daughter captive

Todd's real name is Benjamin Barker. Judge Turpin has him falsely charged and deported to Australia in order to woo Barker's wife Lucy. Turpin's affections are unwanted, and he rapes Lucy, who is so distraught she poisons herself. Turpin keeps the Barkers' young child Johanna as his ward, and becomes attracted to her as she grows up; however, his affections toward Johanna are also unwanted. Barker returns from Australia expecting his family, but upon hearing what has happened, he reopens his barber shop and hopes to finally enact his revenge on Turpin.
5. In "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991), which enemy of the title character did Alan Rickman play?

Answer: Sheriff of Nottingham

The Sheriff of Nottingham rules over England, along with two of the incorrect answers of the question - his cousin Guy of Gisbourne, and the Bishop of Hereford. Robin Hood (originally Robin of Locksley) is an English nobleman who was captured, and returns to find his home in ruins and his father murdered by the Sheriff. To get revenge on the Sheriff, Robin joins a band of outlaws named the Merry Men (one of which is the third incorrect answer, Will Scarlet, who is also an illegitimate brother of Robin), and trains them up to defend themselves against the Sheriff.

They also of course rob the rich and give to the poor. Robin vows to avenge his father by killing the Sheriff.
6. In which 1999 comedy film did Alan Rickman play Metatron, a seraph who acts as the Voice of God?

Answer: Dogma

In "Dogma", Metatron comes to a woman named Bethany, to present her with the task of aiding two fallen angels with their return to heaven from Wisconsin, where they are currently exiled. Bethany is the last relative of Jesus Christ. Metatron comforts her about this revelation, and also divulges that God comes to Earth every once in a while in human form, but this time, He has gone missing, and is unable to return to heaven. All must work together to prevent the fallen angels trying to find their own way back to heaven - and potentially destroying all existence.
7. In 2004, Alan starred in a movie as a surgeon named Alfred Blalock, who teamed up with cardiac pioneer Vivien Thomas to treat a heart defect called the Tetralogy of Fallot. Based on a true story, the movie explores Blalock's recognition for his work, as he was white, and Thomas's contributions being completely ignored, as he was black. Which movie was this?

Answer: Something The Lord Made

The relationship between these two men began in Nashville, Tennessee, in the 1930s, when Blalock hired Thomas to work as a janitor in his lab at Vanderbilt University, before the team moved to Johns Hopkins Hospital, Maryland. Thomas, due to his manual dexterity and intelligence and despite his limited education, became Blalock's assistant and cardiac research partner. Thomas eventually coached Blalock in surgeries to repair the heart defect, having himself performed the procedure on dogs to practise. Sadly, due to his color, Thomas spent a lot of his life being ignored for his work.

However, after Blalock's death, Thomas stayed at the hospital training doctors, and eventually received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his life's work.
8. Alan starred as Antoine Richis in the 2006 film "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer", which was based upon a book by German author Patrick Süskind. The main character Grenouille kills Richis's daughter Laura for her scent; does Richis kill Grenouille in revenge?

Answer: No

Surprisingly, he doesn't. Grenouille is a murderer with a very strong sense of smell, and he kills young women to preserve their scents in the perfect perfume. When he catches Laura Richis's scent, he decides it will be the final scent in this perfume.

After Laura's death, Richis is convinced of Grenouille's guilt, and goes at him with a sword; however, Richis catches the scent of Grenouille's "perfect" perfume, and becomes overwhelmed, declaring Grenouille as his son! At Grenouille's sentencing, the town also becomes overwhelmed by the scent, and he is free to leave the town unscathed, and return to the town he was born in.
9. Which character does Alan Rickman voice in the 2005 science fiction movie "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?

Answer: Marvin the Paranoid Android

All are actually characters in the movie, but it's Marvin who Alan voices. In the movie, a human named Arthur finds his house about to be demolished by bulldozers, and his friend Ford reveals that he is an alien from a planet close to the star Betelgeuse.

He also reveals that Earth is going to be destroyed, so the two hitch a ride on a spaceship, which they are thrown out of when they are discovered. They are picked up the ship Heart of Gold upon which they find various creatures, including Marvin and Ford's half-brother.
10. In "Truly, Madly, Deeply" (1990), Alan plays a cellist called Jamie, who is in a relationship with an interpreter called Nina. What is unusual about the film?

Answer: Jamie is dead.

Jamie has recently died, and returns as a ghost just as Nina is becoming unable to cope with her grief. It is never explicitly explained whether Jamie has really returned, or whether the whole thing is just in Nina's imagination. Not long after the reconciliation, Jamie's behavior starts to really annoy Nina.

For example, he turns up her heating to very hot levels. Nina meets another man, but doesn't want to pursue a relationship with him while Jamie is still around - Jamie leaves to allow Nina to get on with her life.

It appears he only returned to push her away from him enough so that she would be able to move on from him.
