Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character was a Hobbit?

Answer: Frodo

The two possible answers for this question were Bilbo and Frodo. Bilbo had to be used for the Rivendell question, so Frodo had to be used here. Hobbits were short creatures who generally enjoyed food, parties, and simple lives compared to the other races.

It was a big deal when Bilbo, in "The Hobbit", left for an adventure. Decades later, when Bilbo left the Shire, he left his possessions to his nephew, Frodo. The other main Hobbits in the "Lord of the Rings" were Sam, Merry, and Pippin.
2. Which character was an Elf?

Answer: Legolas

The two possible answers for this question were Arwen and Legolas. Arwen was used for the woman question, so Legolas gets used here. Elves in "The Lord of the Rings" looked like beautiful humans with pointed ears, unlike the short or ugly elves you might see with Santa at the North Pole, or at Hogwarts. Most high fantasy media created since has been influenced by Tolkien, with similar depictions of elves.
3. Which character was from Gondor?

Answer: Boromir

The two possible answers here were Aragorn and Boromir. Aragorn was used for the king question, so Boromir goes here. Boromir's father was the steward of Gondor, the man overseeing the kingdom while the king was absent. He was the twenty-sixth consecutive steward.
4. Which character was from Rohan?

Answer: Theoden

The two options for this answer were Eowyn and Theoden. Eowyn was used for the Nazgul question, so Theoden goes here. Rohan was a kingdom in Middle-earth between the Misty Mountains and the White Mountains. Their neighbour to the south was Gondor, which acted as a buffer between them and Mordor. But when Gondor called for aid in "The Return of the King", Rohan answered the call.
5. Which character was a woman?

Answer: Arwen

The two possible answers for this question were Eowyn and Arwen. Eowyn was used for the Nazgul question, so Arwen goes here. There were very few named women in "The Lord of the Rings", with the only other major character being Galadriel, the queen of Lothlórien.

When the novels were adapted into movies, some characters and plot points were reworked to give women more screen time, such as Arwen saving Frodo in "The Fellowship of the Ring".
6. Which character was a wizard?

Answer: Saruman

The two possible answers for this question were Saruman and Gandalf. This was the only question that Saruman was a viable answer for, so he goes here. Saruman started as Saruman the White, but he gave up that title when he joined forces with Sauron. In the book, he adopted a rainbow cloak. Gandalf started as Gandalf the Grey, but became Gandalf the White in "The Two Towers".
7. Which character was a king?

Answer: Aragorn

The two possible answers for this question were Theoden and Aragorn. Theoden had to be used for the Rohan question, so Aragorn has to go here. Theoden was the king of Rohan, and Aragorn became the king of Gondor.
8. Which character lived in Rivendell?

Answer: Bilbo

The two possible answers here were Arwen and Bilbo. Arwen was used for the woman question, so Bilbo gets used here. Rivendell was the house of Elrond, and Arwen was his daughter. Bilbo lived at Rivendell after he left the Shire on his 111th birthday.
9. Which character killed a Nazgul?

Answer: Eowyn

The only person to kill a Nazgul (and the Witch King himself, no less), was Eowyn at the Battle of Minas Tirith, so she goes here. The other eight were destroyed when Sauron was defeated, so maybe their deaths could be ascribed to Gollum, who accidentally destroyed the one ring to rule them all.
10. Which character was a member of the Fellowship of the Ring?

Answer: Gandalf

The possible answers for this question were Frodo, Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gandalf. The only other question Gandalf was viable for was the wizard question, which was taken by Saruman, so Gandalf goes here. The other members of the fellowship were Gimli, Sam, Merry, and Pippin.

The fellowship was created and fractured in "The Fellowship of the Ring". The nine actors all got a matching tattoo of the elven word for "nine", with the exception of John Rhys-Davies (Gimli). His stunt double, Brett Beattie, got the tattoo instead.
