Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie begins with statements that were pertinent during the Korean War.

Answer: True

"The quotes were added at the insistence of the studio after director Robert Altman had removed most of the references to Korea intending it to be mistaken for a Vietnam film, which would reinforce the anti-war statement." - from IMDb.com.
2. The lyrics of the opening theme song were written by Mike Altman, director Robert Altman's son. How old was he at the time?

Answer: 14

Reportedly, Mike Altman made more money from the movie than his father did.
3. The movie is based on what author's novel by the same name?

Answer: Richard Hooker

All of the characters are composites of people Hooker knew, met casually, worked with, or heard about.
4. Which actor played the same character in BOTH the movie version and TV series of "M*A*S*H"?

Answer: Gary Burghoff (Radar)

Radar loves all animals, but only in the television version of "M*A*S*H", not in the movie or book versions.
5. Rene Auberjonois, who played Father Mulcahy, later became well-known for playing which "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" character?

Answer: Odo

You wouldn't think the soft-spoken Father Mulcahy and the gruff Odo were played by the same man, but it goes to show Auberjonois' incredible talents.
6. "M*A*S*H" and another film satirizing a recent American war were released the same year. Which was this other film?

Answer: Catch-22

"Catch-22", based on a bestselling novel, featuring a huge cast, and boasting director Mike Nichols fresh from his success with "The Graduate" (1967), was expected to be the more successful film. When the reverse proved true, Robert Altman hung a banner in his office reading: "Caught-22."
7. When Hot Lips wanted to discuss the nurses on Hawkeye's shift, what was Hawkeye pretending to be eating?

Answer: Lobster

Hawkeye hailed from Crabapple Cove, Maine, where lobsters abound.
8. Hawkeye's nickname was given him by his father, after a fictional character from which novel?

Answer: Last of the Mohicans

This bit of info isn't actually mentioned in the movie, but it's in the book and Hawkeye frequently mentions it in the TV show. It was Hawkeye's father's favorite novel.
9. In the New Era Hospital and Whore House, Hawkeye sees a well-dressed man walk into the establishment. What is his response?

Answer: Whispers, "Is that a client?"

The Geisha girl then laughs at him. In fact, the Geisha girl laughs at everything.
10. In the TV series of "M*A*S*H," Hawkeye is chosen chief surgeon. Who is chief surgeon in the movie version?

Answer: Trapper

During the TV series, Alan Alda's "Hawkeye" was by far a more popular character than Wayne Roger's "Trapper". In fact, Rogers quit the show because his character barely got any good lines, if any!
