quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who stated: "So one week later, Herb's home on his couch with his old man watching his team win the gold medal. Come that close and get nothing. He'll do whatever it takes."?

Answer: Jim Craig

Head coach Herb Brooks brought in another player in late during their training and many of the players were upset about it, thinking is was not fair. This was star goalie Jim Craig's response to those who felt Brooks was just messing with their minds. Jim had an amazing game against the Soviet Union and was a key part in their victory! He sometimes felt he was pushed too hard by head coach Herb Brooks, but all of the boys on the team seemed to respect him and he smiled a lot.
2. When the boys were watching video footage of the Soviet hockey team, who joked: "They're Russians. They get shot if they smile."?

Answer: Jack O'Callahan

O'Callahan was an outstanding defender, but indeed had a temper. He greatly assisted in their first goal scored against the Soviets. This comment was in response to Phil Verchota whispering "Do these guys EVER smile?".
3. After two boys got into a fight during the first day of practice, Herb decided to do some team introductions. Whose response was: "I'm from wherever's not gonna get me hit."?

Answer: Ralph Cox

Jack O'Callahan and Rob McClanahan had an old rivalry that stemmed from when they were playing for different colleges. After they got into a fight during the first day of practice, Herb Brooks decided to do a couple of team introductions. This was Cox's response to 'Where are you from?' Ralph was a very easy going guy, and it made the team (and the audience) very sad when he had to be cut a week before the Olympics.
4. After five or six months of practicing, Herb brought in one of this players from the University of Minnesota to train with the boys, but there was only one roster spot left. Since the boys were upset about it, they decided to have a little word with Brooks. Who said: "You want me to say 'I'm scared of getting cut?' I'm scared of getting cut. Everyone is."?

Answer: Mike Eruzione

Eruzione had a great work ethic, but it has hard to judge how Herb felt about him, considering Brooks was always on him since day one of training. After a road game, a few of the boys spoke with Herb about the new guy he brought in. Since every boy on the team was fighting for the last spot on the roster, they did not think it was fair that a newcomer potentially take one of their spots.
5. "If we play 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not THIS game! Not tonight!" Who made this statement?

Answer: Herb Brooks

Herb Brooks was the head coach of Team USA and before he even took the job, he stated his goal was to dethrone the Soviet Union. He said this in the locker room during his speech before the big game with the Soviet Union.
6. At the beginning of the movie, who saw Jim Craig at tryouts and exclaimed: "What's up, ya sieve!?"

Answer: Jack O'Callahan

O'Callahan, the defender who was 'the first to drop his gloves,' ran into Jim Craig at tryouts and jokingly called him a sieve. Apparently, in hockey slang, a sieve is a goaltender who lets too many pucks past him. Craig did not appear to be offended at all.
7. When speaking with Herb Brooks, who said: "Bottom line: my mom wanted this--me playing on this team. Can't say no to someone who drove me to practice everyday, right?"

Answer: Jim Craig

Jimmy's mom had died shortly before their training began. Herb was worried about the level of concentration Craig would have due to his mother's recent passing. When the two were briefly speaking at the beginning of training, this topic was brought up. Herb seemed to be pretty convinced with Craig's commitment after that.
8. After a road game, some of the boys decided to have a word with Brooks about the newcomer he brought in six months late from the University of Minnesota. They felt it was not fair to the rest of the team who had worked so hard all summer long, because there was not room for everybody on the final roster. Who finally convinced Herb to send the boy home by saying: "Because we are a family!"

Answer: Mark Johnson

Johnson was the starting center for Team USA and scored two goals in their thrilling defeat of the Soviet Union. After the road game in which some of the boys were speaking to Herb about the newcomer he brought in, Brooks was not convinced as to why he should send the newcomer home. Mark Johnson finally said "We are a family!" Brooks never had any intention on keeping the new kid on the final roster.

He just wanted to see how it would affect the chemistry of his team.
9. With his last breath of energy, who yelled out: "I play for...the United States of America!"?

Answer: Mike Eruzione

After an embarrassing 3-3 tie with Norway, Herb made his team stay after the game and do sprints for hours. Tired and beaten up and all hope seemingly lost for the boys, Eruzione screamed this quote with the remaining oxygen he had left in his lungs. Brooks then concluded the sprints. Shortly after that night, he made Eruzione his team captain.
10. In perhaps the greatest moment in American sports history, who made the exclamation: "Five seconds left in the game! Do you believe in Miracles!? YES!"?

Answer: Al Michaels

Although Al Michaels and Ken Dryden redid most of the commentary for the movie, the closing seconds of the game against the Soviet Union use the actual original ABC Sports commentary from 1980. Michaels is one of the most well-known sports broadcasters in professional athletics and does nothing more or nothing less in the movie "Miracle."
