Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the player who got a $30,000 signing bonus, so he wasn't at the Olympic tryout?

Answer: Joey Mullen

Jim Craig mentions his name to Jack O'Callahan when they first meet up with each other at the Colorado tryouts. Mullen was the first US born player to score 500 goals in the NHL.
2. What is the name of the player who Brooks brings in, well into pre-Olympic play, and what college does he go to?

Answer: Tim Harrer/Minnesota

The boys speak out about how they were a family now, so Brooks sends Harrer back to Minnesota.
3. Who assisted on and scored the tying goal against Sweden in the closing seconds of the game?

Answer: Schnieder to Pavelich to Baker

This last second goal kept their medal hopes alive. You have to watch closely to see Schnieder kick the puck to Pavelich, who passes it to Baker, who scores on a one-timer.
4. What year did Herb Brooks get cut from the US Olympic hockey team?

Answer: 1960

This was the same year team USA won its first hockey gold. So the players knew that Brooks would now stop at nothing, until he got the gold that slipped away 20 years earlier.
5. Brooks says, "If you give me _______ you will make my job very easy."

Answer: 99%

This is one of the fist things he says to the original 28 players in Colorado, giving them an idea of the kind of coach that Brooks is.
6. What pro team was trying to sign Jim Craig?

Answer: Atlanta Flames

He mentions this after he refused to take the test and is talking to Coach Brooks about the rough times his family, and his father in particular, is going through. (the Atlanta Flames are now the Calgary Flames, and The Atlanta Thrashers didn't exist in 1979.)
7. Who scored two goals against the USSR in the team USA victory?

Answer: Mark Johnson

One was with just one second left in the period, and after that goal the Soviets pulled goalie Vladislav Tretiak. Although Tretiak never played in the NHL, due to political reasons, he is still said to be one of the best goalies ever to play the game, and Mark Johnson and Team USA drove him out of the most significant hockey game ever.
8. What College is NOT mentioned during the players' introductions?

Answer: Michigan Tech University (MTU)

MTU was a college hockey power in the 60s and early but it had sort of tapered off by '79, and consisted of mostly Canadian born players. Pavelich went to UMD, O'Callahan (along with a few others) went to Boston University and Mark Johnson went to Wisconsin.
9. How much time did the players have to go blue line back, red line back, far blue line back, goal line back?

Answer: 45 seconds

For those of you who don't know hockey that well, that is skating about 1000 feet with stops and direction changes in 45 seconds. That is very fast and very hard to do. The USA Olympic team did it several times per practice too.
10. What team does Mike Eruzione say he he plays for?

Answer: United States of America

This is after they tie Norway and skate for nearly an hour. After he says it, Brooks doesn't make them skate any more that day. He skated them to build team unity and Eruzione shows it.
