More Quotes from "Pirates of the Caribbean" Quiz

Based on a ride at Disneyland and Disneyworld, Gore Verbinski's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" was one of my favourite movies from 2003. See if you can remember who said these lines.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You'll not lay a hand on someone under the protection of parlay."

Answer: Barbossa

Drawn by the pull of the Aztec gold, the crew of the Black Pearl attacked Port Royal, zeroing in on Elizabeth, who was wearing the medallion around her neck. Instead of yielding to them, Elizabeth invoked the right of parlay, and was taken aboard the Black Pearl to meet with Barbossa. One of the pirates struck her across the face, and Barbossa responded with this line.
Barbossa was played to perfection by Geoffrey Rush.
2. "I suppose if it is worthless then there's no point in me keeping it." (said while dangling a pirate medallion over the side of the ship)

Answer: Elizabeth Swann

Once aboard the Black Pearl, Elizabeth tried to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal. Since she had been told by Pintel and Ragetti that it was the pirate medallion that they were after, she tried to use that as a bargaining chip. Barbossa pretended that the medallion was of no real interest to him, so Elizabeth held it over the side of the ship and threatened to drop it into the ocean. She even went so far as to let the actual medallion drop, while hanging onto the chain, which provoked a reaction that proved Barbossa was lying about his interest in the medallion.
This is also when Elizabeth said her name was Turner, a mistake that led to her being taken to Isla de Muerta.
Elizabeth Swann was played by Keira Knightley.
3. "I'd rather see her at the bottom of the ocean than see her in the hands of a pirate."

Answer: Norrington

After Will helped Sparrow escape from prison, they commandeered one of the ships in the harbour so that they could go after the pirates and Elizabeth. They tricked Norrington into believing they were going to steal the Dauntless, causing him to have the Interceptor readied to give pursuit. Once Norrington's crew boarded the Dauntless, Will and Jack swung over to the Interceptor, sailing away on a ship that was already primed to sail.

When Norrington gave orders to get the Dauntless ready to make pursuit, his lieutenant pointed out that they would never catch up with the Interceptor. Norrington said he didn't need to catch her - he only wanted to get close enough to fire on her.

When questioned about whether or not he really wanted to fire on his own ship, he responded with this line. Norrington was played by Jack Davenport.
4. "But pirate is in your blood boy, so you'll have to square with that one day."

Answer: Jack Sparrow

Will and Sparrow have successfully commandeered the Interceptor and have set sail for Tortuga. Will takes this moment to confront Jack about how he reacted when Will told him his name, and about the fact that Jack once knew Will's father. Jack tells Will that his father was a pirate, and Will is reluctant to accept the news. Jack swings out one of the sails, catching Will and leaving him dangling out over the ocean. Jack speaks this line, essentially telling Will that refusing to admit the truth does not alter reality.
Jack Sparrow is brilliantly played by Johnny Depp.
5. "You know, the first thing I'm going to do after the curse is lifted is eat a whole bushel of apples."

Answer: Barbossa

The theme of apples occurs a few times throughout the movie, as Barbossa is obsessed with not being able to taste them. He is unable to taste any food actually, but the taste of apples is what he seems to miss the most. He offers an apple to Elizabeth, on her first night on the Black Pearl, and his intensity when he offers it has her worried that it's poisonous.

This line is spoken in the cave on the Isla de Muerta, just before he realizes that Elisabeth has escaped, and has taken Will's medallion with her, so they no longer have all the pieces of Aztec gold that they need to break the curse.
6. "I thought I'd lost it the day they rescued me. It was a gift from my father...he sent it to me."

Answer: Will Turner

When Will rescues Elizabeth from the cave on the Isla de Muerta she grabs his medallion, which had fallen out of the chest of Aztec gold. Once they are safely aboard the Interceptor, she takes it from around her neck and gives it back to him. She took if off of his neck when they were both children, and he was pulled from the ocean, and although he has not seen it since, he recognizes it right away.

He questions her on why she took it from him, and she replies that she thought he was a pirate, and didn't want to see him hung. Following close on the heels of his conversation with Sparrow about his father being a pirate, this information does not sit too well with him. Will Turner is played by Orlando Bloom.
7. "I agreed she'd go free, but it was you who failed to specify when or where."

Answer: Barbossa

After Barbossa and his crew once again recover the last piece of Aztec gold and scuttle the Interceptor, things are looking pretty bleak for Sparrow and Elizabeth. Will Turner, thought to have gone down with the Interceptor, appears and reveals that it is his blood that the pirates need to break the curse.

He holds a pistol to his head and threatens to kill himself unless Barbossa agrees to set Elizabeth free, and guarantees the safety of the crew. Barbossa agrees to the terms, but then maroons Elizabeth and Sparrow on the deserted island where he had left Sparrow once before.

When will protests that he's not keeping his end of the deal, Barbossa responds with this line.
8. "The boy's fate is regrettable, but so is his decision to engage in piracy."

Answer: Governor Swann

After Swann and Norrigton rescue Elizabeth and Sparrow from the deserted island, Elizabeth tries to get them to go after Will, who is being taken to the Isla de Muerta on the Black Pearl. This is her father's response to her request. She only manages to talk them into rescuing Will when she appeals to Norrington to do it for her as a wedding gift, finally giving him an answer to the question he had asked her at the beginning of the movie.
Governor Swann is played by Jonathan Pryce.
9. "That's what you call ironic."

Answer: Ragetti

Returning to the Isla de Muerta with Will in tow, pirates, Pintel and Ragetti, explain to Will how they knew his father. Bootstrap Bill, as he had been known, was the only one on the crew who did not approve of the mutiny that Barbossa led against Sparrow.

In response to this, Barbossa had him weighted down with a cannon and sent to the bottom of the ocean. It was only after this that they realized that Bootstrap's blood was also needed to break the curse, which is when Ragetti remarked on the irony of the situation. Ragetti is played by Mackenzie Crook, and his partner Pintel is played by Lee Arenberg.
10. "I feel...cold."

Answer: Barbossa

These are Barbossa's dying words. For the years that they lived under the curse, Barbossa and the crew of the Black Pearl were unable to feel anything. When Sparrow shoots Barbossa, with the one shot he'd been keeping for that purpose for years, Barbossa, still immortal, told him he had wasted his shot.

However, Sparrow cut himself and bled on the Aztec coin that he had taken, tossed the coin to Will who returned it to the chest and added his own blood, thus ending the curse. Barbossa became human, and immediately started bleeding from the wound in his chest where Sparrow shot him.

He spoke these last few words and died.
