Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Meet Kate Armstrong, a solitary woman whose cooking dominates her life; even the therapy sessions her employer requires her to attend revolve around her recipes. As the executive chef at an upscale restaurant in New York City, she demands and is confident in, perfection in her dishes. However, in an early scene, a client complains that what dish is undercooked?

Answer: Foie gras

The customer should always be treated as if they're right, or so the restaurant's owner Paula (Patricia Clarkson) tries tell Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones) - but Kate refuses to cede the point that the "undercooked" foie gras (fattened goose liver) she prepared for the client's wife is anything but perfection.

The couple, of course, leaves - and it's no skin off Kate's back. In a later scene a customer complains that the rare steak he ordered was overcooked: Kate, after a second attempt to please him, sets a raw steak in front of the man! "Rare enough for you?"
2. Kate, preparing for the arrival of her visiting sister, Christine, and niece, Zoe, receives a phone call that her sister has died in a car accident. Kate becomes Zoe's guardian, and with much uncertainty on both parts, they struggle to adjust to their new circumstances. The first day of school is a bit hectic, and Kate has to help Zoe find what item?

Answer: Scarf

Zoe (Abigail Breslin) is nearly late for her first day at school - Kate oversleeps, and Zoe has to wake her up. Zoe needs her scarf before she is ready to go, and though Kate offers Zoe one of her own, she searches through the unpacked boxes to find just the one Zoe wants.

After a failed attempt at getting a babysitter for Zoe, Kate brings the little girl to the restaurant with her, where she helps out as kitchen assistant (despite a tendency to discard certain unappealing, and very expensive, ingredients) to the rhythm of "Sway" by Michael Bublé.
3. Kate and Zoe both have difficulty settling into new routines: Zoe is depressed over the tragic loss of her mother, and Kate, not at all used to children, tries just a little too hard. After being relieved of her duties at work for a week, Kate returns to the restaurant to find a rather unwelcome new sous chef, Nicholas Palmer, doing what in her kitchen?

Answer: Singing opera

An exuberant, easy-going sous chef, singing along with Pavarotti opera music, is not what Kate expected to return to! This leads to an argument with Paula, since Kate insists on choosing her sous chefs herself. Although Nick (Aaron Eckhart) could have taken a position anywhere he wanted, he chose 22 Bleecker so that he could work with Kate, whose culinary talents he admires.

After he volunteers to quit if Kate so wishes, Kate relents and Nick stays on at the restaurant.
4. For their afternoon meal, the restaurant's chefs (except for Kate, who never partakes) eat a meal cooked by one of the chefs. When it is Nick's turn, he makes spaghetti. Trying to entice Kate to taste it, Nick takes a plate over to her and tells her that he got the recipe from whom?

Answer: His grandmother

Nick tells Kate that, as she lay on her deathbed, his grandmother told him her recipe for the spaghetti. He's soon caught in this fib when reminded that his grandmother lives in Miami. Sticking to his story, he claims it was a miracle and she pulled through. Nick also serves his spaghetti to a very hungry Zoe (who refuses to eat Kate's gourmet cooking), whom he "tricks" into eating it by making a plate for himself, sitting beside her as he begins to eat, savoring every bite, and then handing the unfinished plate to her.

At first she takes a tentative bite, but soon digs in, much to Aunt Kate's surprise.
5. Kate comes home from a long day, only to realize that she forgot to pick Zoe up from school. Zoe is rightfully upset over this, and Kate grants her a wish to make up for it. What happens while Kate is buying food for the restaurant that causes her to forget about Zoe?

Answer: Leah, a sous chef, went into labor.

While Kate is purchasing some truffles (for her signature quail dish) that go for a shocking, yet not unrealistic, $2200 a pound, Leah (Jenny Wade) declares that her water has broken. Not wanting the police around, the truffle dealer at first balks at calling 911, but Kate convinces him it will only be an ambulance. Kate accompanies Leah to the hospital, and subsequently comes home without Zoe.
6. Zoe decides to save the wish Kate gives her for a while, but when Sunday rolls around and neither Kate nor Nick have to work, she tells Kate what her wish is: for the three of them to have dinner together. Nick comes to Kate's apartment, and they have a pizza party with what theme?

Answer: Safari

Banishing Kate from her kitchen, Zoe and Nick make the pizza together. When they are finished and Zoe comes to get Kate, she oddly requests that Kate take off her shoes. They have a safari-themed party in Zoe's bedroom, accompanied by the classic song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

After Zoe goes to bed, Kate, who has thawed considerably towards the sous chef, spends the evening with Nick, eating tiramisu, although Kate "never" eats dessert. Nick claims that tiramisu means "food of the gods" in Italian, but Kate knows better (it actually translates to "pick me up" or "pull me up").
7. One morning, Kate and Zoe make a confession to each other: neither wants to go to work or school, respectively. So, they stay home and have some time to themselves. Kate wins and gets rich playing what board game with Zoe, prompting a pillow fight?

Answer: Monopoly

While the two are playing Monopoly together, Kate is thrilled at raking in the fictitious money, but Zoe has to mortgage her properties to keep afloat. The pillow fight starts slowly - but then it's war! Parker Brothers' Monopoly, patented in 1935, bills itself as having been played by more than 750 million people, making it one of the most popular board games.
8. When Kate returns to work, after spending a few days with Zoe, her boss, Paula, seems to push Kate aside in favor of Nick. Confronting each other in the freezer, Nick tells Kate that he has been offered her job. He subsequently quits, but leaves Kate a message on her answering machine, telling her what?

Answer: He has turned down the job offer.

Kate, believing her trust in him has been misplaced, accuses Nick of having been deliberately trying to take over her job from the start. But Nick gets to the heart of the matter when he asks her how long it has been since she trusted anyone. When she comes home and plays his message twice, telling her that he had refused the position at 22 Bleecker, Kate begins to see how wrong her conclusion was.
9. No longer able to work at the restaurant, missing Nick's formerly frequent visits, and desperately in need of her mother, Zoe disappears one day. Kate panics and fears that she has run away, until she sees that Zoe's favorite stuffed animal is still in her bedroom. She calls Nick, and together they try to find Zoe. Where do they find her?

Answer: At her mother's grave

As Kate finds out from her teacher, Zoe has been sleeping in class due to staying up so late, and telling stories that Kate makes her work at the restaurant to earn her keep. Unless Kate stops bringing her to the restaurant, she could lose Zoe. When she tells Zoe, it devastates her and she thinks Kate just doesn't want her there.

When Zoe goes missing, after calling Nick and checking the restaurant and school, Kate deduces that Zoe has gone to her mother's grave; Zoe is afraid of forgetting her mother.

She leaves a peacock feather, the one she played with as she and her mother were together for the last time, at the gravesite.
10. Nick tells Kate that he has taken a job as an executive chef in San Francisco; Kate realizes how much he has come to mean to her and is less than pleased with this news. While making it clear that coming to a man's apartment and asking him not to go to San Francisco is something she "never" does, Kate does exactly that. With a happy ending to this film, the three open their own restaurant. What do they call it?

Answer: Zoe's, Nick's and Kate's Bistro

Earlier, when discussing how such a venture might work, Nick jokingly figured that they'd do like they always did: "You tell me what to do, and then I'll go behind your back and do whatever I want!" The trio's bistro has a spinning, triangular sign with each partner's name to a side.

After delivering a heavily sugar-dusted plate of pancakes to Kate's neighbor, Zoe adjusts the sign to read Zoe's Bistro.
