Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene we see a name etched on a stone plaque in front of a house. What is the name on the plaque?

Answer: Vale

The Vales are a rich and powerful Boston family. The story centers on Charlotte Vale, who is very shy and repressed. There is a bit of irony about the name; Charlotte's true personality is 'veiled' in the beginning of the movie.
2. Who asks Dr. Jaquith to visit Charlotte?

Answer: Lisa, Charlotte's sister-in-law

Charlotte's mother does not think there is anything wrong with Charlotte and is horrified at the idea that her daughter might be having a nervous breakdown. June teases Charlotte unmercifully about her old-fashioned clothes and shy manner. Charlotte's only sympathetic friend at this point in the movie is her sister-in-law, Lisa (who is also June's mother).
3. Where does Dr. Jaquith suggest Charlotte spend a few weeks?

Answer: Cascade

Cascade is the name of Dr. Jaquith's convalescent hospital. Charlotte's mother thinks of it as a place with 'high walls and yowling inmates', but in reality Cascade is a beautiful resort-like place in the country.
4. The movie's title comes from a poem by which poet?

Answer: Walt Whitman

When Dr. Jaquith tells Charlotte she is strong enough to be on her own again after a few weeks at Cascade, she is still unsure of herself. Dr. Jaquith has a quotation from Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass' printed out for her to give her courage and confidence: "The untold want, by life and land ne'er granted/Now, Voyager, sail thou forth to seek and find".
5. What name does Charlotte answer to when we first see her on the ocean cruise?

Answer: Miss Beauchamp

Lisa arranges for Charlotte to take a cruise after her convalescence. A cousin, Rene Beauchamp, was supposed to go on the cruise but cancelled at the last minute, so there was no time for Charlotte's name to be added to the passenger list. This creates more identity confusion for Charlotte; she even ends up wearing Rene Beauchamp's clothes!
6. What gift does Jerry give Charlotte after their day of sightseeing together?

Answer: A bottle of perfume

The perfume he buys for her is called "Joie de Fleur". It is obvious that even though Jerry mentions his wife and family early on, he is smitten with the now beautiful and poised Charlotte, as she is with him.
7. What does Deb say is keeping Jerry's wife from divorcing him?

Answer: Propinquity and propriety

Deb is Jerry's friend. She clues Charlotte in to Jerry's unhappy home life. Jerry's wife Isabel holds him back from his career in architecture and their second child, Tina, is unwanted and unloved. But because she is so concerned with appearances Isabel will not let go of her husband.
8. When Charlotte returns home from her cruise, she is popular and well liked by all who meet her. What other life changing event happens to her?

Answer: She becomes engaged

In South America, Charlotte and Jerry acknowledge their love for one another but realize that because he is married, their situation is hopeless. In Boston she becomes re-acquainted with Elliott Livingston, a rich widower. She agrees to marry him but later breaks it off after running into Jerry again at a party.
9. What is Tina's pet name for Charlotte?

Answer: Camille

Tina, Jerry's young daughter, reminds Charlotte of herself before she blossomed and so she takes Tina under her wing. The two go on a camping trip and they become so close that Charlotte suggests Tina call her something other than 'Miss Vale'. After hearing Charlotte's suggestions, Tina chooses Camille, which is significant because that is also Jerry's pet name for Charlotte.
10. In the end, Charlotte becomes Tina's guardian, and Charlotte and Jerry agree that though they love each other, their relationship will remain chaste. When he asks her if that will be enough for her, she says: "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon; we have ______________________". What does Charlotte say they have?

Answer: the stars

The camera pans up to a lovely star-filled evening, the music swells, and we fade out. This is probably not the way the story would end if the movie were made today! Things were a bit different in 1942, when divorce and mental illness were enough of a scandal to make this film a bit shocking.
