Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The night before the circus left their Winter Quarters the storks delivered their "bundles" to the animal mothers. Which mother didn't get the bundle she was waiting for?

Answer: Mrs Jumbo

The storks proudly flew through wind, rain, sleet, snow, thunder and lightning to deliver their precious "bundles". When they arrived at the Winter Quarters in Florida they "deposited" their deliveries into the loving arms of the animal mothers. As Mrs Jumbo reluctantly boarded the train taking them to a new town, she searched the sky hoping to see a stork. She even received a rather rude "push" from the Elephant Matriarch!

Mrs Jumbo and the Elephant Matriarch were both voiced by Verna Felton. You may remember her as Mrs Porter, the domineering maid Lucy Ricardo hired (and Ricky fired).
2. Where was Mrs Jumbo's baby finally delivered?

Answer: On the train

Mr Stork's Special Delivery was delayed. While resting on a cloud he consulted a map and spotted the circus train, hauled by Casey Junior the locomotive. He flew and delivered his bundle to Mrs Jumbo in the elephant car.

Mr Stork was voiced by Sterling Halloway. Halloway, a voice actor for The Walt Disney Company, was the voice of Winnie the Pooh in Disney's "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh"-1977.
3. The other elephants laughed at "Little Jumbo" because of his enormous ____.

Answer: ears

The Elephant Matriarch tickled "Jumbo Jr" causing him to sneeze. When his huge ears flapped open the other elephants laughed and said he should be named "Dumbo". Mrs Jumbo loved and cared for her precious baby. She remained unfazed even when he tripped in the mud during the opening day parade and needed a bath!
4. Mrs. Jumbo was put in the "prison wagon" because she spanked a boy with her trunk.

Answer: True

On opening day of the circus the boy grabbed one of Dumbo's ears and pulled it very hard. Mrs Jumbo angrily spanked him as he yelled. The elephant keepers locked her in a wagon with a sign that read: "DANGER! MAD ELEPHANT! KEEP OUT!"
5. Who befriended Dumbo and gave him encouragement?

Answer: Timothy Q Mouse

At this point in the movie we meet the very important character, Timothy Q Mouse. With Mrs Jumbo locked the prison the other elephants gossiped and shunned poor little Dumbo. When Timothy saw (and heard) how they were treating him he immediately took Dumbo under his wing. He came up with a plan to help Dumbo take advantage of his unique ears, become famous and free his mother.

Timothy was voiced by the character actor Edward Brophy.
6. Timothy's plan was that Dumbo would jump on a springboard and bounce to the top of the elephant pyramid.

Answer: True

At the finale the elephants formed a pyramid balancing act. Timothy had the idea that Dumbo could jump on the acrobats' springboard and bounce to the top of the pyramid--even holding a little flag in his trunk.
7. What did Timothy do to ensure that Ringmaster would "go along" with his plan?

Answer: He whispered his plan to the Ringmaster while he was sleeping.

Much to Timothy's surprise his "trick" worked! After whispering the suggestion to the Ringmaster while he slept, the Ringmaster woke up the next day thinking it was his own idea.

The Ringmaster was voiced by character actor Herman Bing.
8. Sadly the act was unsuccessful and poor Dumbo was made to dress up as a ______ complete with a silly grin painted on his face.

Answer: clown

Dumbo was used in the silliest act of the circus--a fake fire. With clowns dressed as firemen he jumped from a cardboard house into the firemen's net. Dressed in a baby's costume, Dumbo was very unhappy and frightened!
9. Where did Timothy and Dumbo wake up the next morning?

Answer: On a tree branch

Timothy woke up, still perched in the brim of Dumbo's hat--still on Dumbo's head-- but Dumbo was fast aleeep on a branch very high above the ground! He noticed three black crows staring at him and he had no idea how he and Dumbo got on the tree branch.
10. Who told Timothy that Dumbo flew up there?

Answer: crows

When they told him Dumbo flew up there Timothy excitedly told Dumbo the news. Dumbo tried to balance himself on the branch but he slipped and down they tumbled bouncing from branch to branch landing in water.

Jim Crow was voiced by Cliff Edwards and the "Crow Chorus" was the Hall Johnson Choir.
11. What "trick" did the crows play on Dumbo that actually helped him fly?

Answer: They gave him a "magic feather".

Timothy told Dumbo that if he could fly when he was asleep, he could fly when he was awake. Even with Timothy as a teacher and hours of practice Dumbo flapped his ears but couldn't fly.

The crows gave Dumbo a feather and fooled him into thinking it was magic. The trick was a success! With the feather wrapped in his trunk, Dumbo had confidence and soon soared like a eagle!
12. Where did Dumbo and Timothy go next?

Answer: Back to the circus grounds

They flew back to the grounds with Timothy cheering Dumbo on and landed before they reached the tents. They arrived back at the grounds just in time for the clown act. This time Dumbo happily went to his place to wait for his cue to jump into the net.
13. What happened to the feather during the clown act?

Answer: Dumbo lost his grip and the feather floated away.

Dumbo waited for his cue to jump from the carboard house. When Dumbo jumped into the clowns' net the feather slipped from his trunk and floated away. He quickly began to plunge down!
14. How did Timothy help him?

Answer: Timothy told him the truth about the feather.

Timothy knew that Dumbo thought his flying ability was gone without the feather. He shouted to him that the feather was a trick and assured Dumbo that he could indeed fly! Dumbo began to flap his ears and do spins, loops and rolls in midair (much to the delight of the audience).
15. Sadly, Timothy's plan to help Dumbo use his ears to become famous and successful and free his mother failed.

Answer: False

Quite the opposite, Dumbo became a huge success! He forgave all who teased him. Mrs Jumbo, freed from the prison cage, was able to see her precious baby fly. With Timothy as his manager Dumbo was famous from coast to coast and the circus was renamed "Dumbo's Flying Circus".
