Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As "Django Unchained" began, Dr. King Schulz (Christoph Waltz) "purchased" Django (Jamie Foxx) from a pair of slave traders. What type of doctor was Schulz?

Answer: Dentist

Dr. King Schulz arrived with his dentist wagon with a giant bouncing tooth on it, but he later confessed to Django that he hadn't worked as a dentist for five years. He was now a bounty hunter, and he needed Django's assistance in locating three brothers who had worked on the plantation where Django had worked. Schulz didn't know what the men looked like, but Django could identify them. Christoph Waltz won his second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his quirky portrayal of the German bounty hunter; his first was for another Quentin Tarantino film, "Inglourious Basterds".
2. When Dr. Schulz and Django arrived at the saloon to collect their first bounty, the startled innkeeper ran off to get help. Dr. Schulz told the innkeeper "to get the sheriff, not the marshall". Why?

Answer: The sheriff was the fugitive Schulz was hunting.

When Sheriff Bill Sharp arrived at the saloon and ordered Schulz and Django outside, Schulz shot the sheriff in front of the townsfolk. Schulz then told the innkeeper, "Now you can get the marshall." When the marshall arrived, Schulz informed him that the sheriff was actually Willard Peck who was wanted for cattle rustling.

He then told the marshall that the marshall owed him the $200 bounty.
3. Dr. Schulz agreed to share the reward money for tracking down the Brittle brothers with Django. What did Django plan to buy with his share of the money?

Answer: His wife's freedom

Django explained that his wife and he had been sold separately after they tried to escape. Schulz became particularly interested after finding out that Django's wife was named Broomhilda (or Brunhilde, as Schulz pronounced the name). Broomhilda, or Hildy, as she was known, had worked for a German woman who taught her some German. Schulz explained the legend of Siegfried and Brunhilde to Django and realized that Django's quest to save Hildy made Django a "real life Siegfried". Schulz told him he'd go to the town in Mississippi where there would be a record of the sale to help Django find Hildy.
4. After locating and killing the Brittle brothers, Dr. Schulz and Django were camping in a valley when their campsite was attacked by a group of vigilantes. Before attacking the site, what was the comic topic of debate among the mob?

Answer: Not being able to see out of the bags on their heads

In a scene that could have been right out of "Blazing Saddles", the vigilantes complained amongst themselves that they couldn't see out of the bags they were wearing on their heads. Willard's wife had made the masks and he became rather irritated about the complaining and rode off.

The group then debated on whether to wear the bags or not before the leader (Don Johnson) declared that it was a raid and they didn't need to see. When they arrived at the campsite, the mob realized that no one was there, just as Dr. Schulz shot the wagon which he had loaded with dynamite.
5. After his man was killed in the Mandingo fight at the Cleopatra Club, Amerigo Vessepi (Franco Nero, the original Django in the 1966 film) stood at the bar with Django and had a drink. He asked Django his name and asked if he could spell it. When Django said "the 'd' is silent", what was Vessepi's response?

Answer: "I know."

The 1966 film had little in common with Quentin Tarantino's film other than that both were very violent. The 1966 film was called "Django" and took place in the old west and Mexico, although like many other spaghetti westerns, was filmed in Italy. Franco Nero played the titled character who was out for revenge after the murder of his wife. Nero basically had a cameo in Tarantino's film; he was the owner of a Mandingo fighter who lost his bout, and he had a quick drink with Django and a memorable line before leaving the film.
6. When Dr. Schulz and Django arrived at Candyland, the plantation of Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), what did they discover had happened to Hildy?

Answer: She had been put in a hot box for trying to escape.

Dr. Schulz had confirmed that Hildy was at Candyland as he was riding in Candie's carriage. When they arrived at Candyland, Dr. Schulz asked if he could see Hildy. Candie's house slave Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson) told Candie that Hildy had tried to escape so she was being punished in the hot box, a metal box set out on the ground.

A frustrated Candie asked, "How many people ran away while I was gone?" He then ordered for Hildy to be cleaned up and taken to Dr. Schulz.
7. How did Calvin Candie realize that Dr. Schulz wasn't really interested in buying the Mandingo fighter, Eskimo Joe?

Answer: Candie's house slave, Stephen, told him.

Calvin and Stephen had an interesting relationship. Stephen was completely indignant when he first saw Django riding on a horse and threw a tantrum about having Django stay in the house. Candie tolerated his outburst before finally ordering him to do as told.

At dinner, Stephen had noticed the looks between Django and Hildy and correctly realized that they knew each other and that the reason Schulz and Django had come to Candyland was to get Hildy, not a Mandingo fighter.
8. What finally made Dr. Schulz shoot Calvin Candie?

Answer: Candie insisted Schulz shake his hand.

Dr. Schulz had paid $12,000 for Hildy's freedom, and Calvin Candie had signed the documents confirming the sale. Mission accomplished. But as Schulz, Django and Hildy were about to leave, Candie insisted that Schulz shake his hand to confirm the deal. Schulz had had enough of southern traditions, and as he reached for Candie's hand, he shot Candie with the pistol in his sleeve. Schulz then turned to Django and said "I'm sorry, I couldn't resist" before being shot by one of Candie's men.

A massive bloodbath then ensued as Django shot up the house.
9. After Django shot up the Candyland Big House, the people at the Big House had several ideas for killing Django, according to house slave, Stephen. What decision was finally made?

Answer: Give him to a mining company

According to Stephen, the people at the Big House had been discussing creative ways of killing Django such as whipping him to death or throwing him to the Mandingos because "the white folk ain't never had a bright idea in their life". Stephen had been suggesting that they sell Django to the LeQuint Dickey Mining company because of how the slaves were treated, and then Miss Laura "come up with the bright idea" of doing just as he suggested. Django would be a nameless slave "swinging a sledgehammer turning big rocks into little rocks" for the rest of his life.
10. At the end of the film, what happened to the Big House at Candyland?

Answer: Django blew it up.

Django had kept a copy of his first bounty notice and he showed it to the mining company employees who were escorting him to his new owner. He told them that the fugitives on the paper were actually at Candyland and that he would help them capture them and share the reward.

The men agreed to do so and freed Django, only to be immediately killed by him. He then rode back to Candyland with dynamite that the men had been carrying, and he rigged up the Big House while the occupants were at Calvin Candie's funeral.

When they returned, Django told the servants to leave, except Stephen, and then proceeded to shoot everyone. He left Stephen wounded in the house and lit the fuse before leaving to join Hildy.
