In the book, the date was the last recorded date of when the nine men from Colorado went into the Little Angel Mine. They were to fake their deaths because the operation to get the Byzanium was so top secret.

Seagram stated that the properties of Byzanium were radioactive, and could be used in a defense shield which would stop any inbound missile targeting the U.S. When these power stations were activated, an invisible wall would be put up. Any missile would disintegrate after coming in contact with this "wall".
