Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Once upon a time, in a land far, far away; so far away that____."

Answer: "You never knew it existed."

In the beginning of the movie, Bonnie reads a fairy tale, set "far away" to her family, Mrs. Nelson (mother) and Timmy (younger brother). She begins to describe a story about an Elfin prince (Rigoletto) who uses the power of music to heal his people. Rigoletto is struck by an evil sword which leaves his face "pale, deathlike, and ugly."
2. "But when I enter the kingdom of dreams, and face the promise of all I can be, will they see me as a heroine? Won't someone ______?" What comes next?

Answer: "let me in"

The song "Let Me In" is sung during the opening credits and pertains to the subject of fairy tales. "I love the part in fairy tales that's very near the end..." The song starts while the camera is showing Ribaldi move into his new house and leaving his betrothed.

At the end of the song, we see Bonnie singing it in the competition. The symbolism in this line could be similar to Bonnie asking Ribaldi to open his heart for her and let compassion in later on in the story. Bonnie does sing it once again for Ribaldi, but we only hear only the line "Won't someone let me in?"
3. Who wins the first vocal competition?

Answer: Kathleen

"By a vote of three to one, once again, this year's winner is Kathleen Hamilton." Kathleen is from a high social class in the depression era town of Castle Gate. Her curls bounce against her pink dress as she smirks at Bonnie and her friend before taking her place on the stage. "Nice shoes Georgie; a perfect match for the dress." Is all she says. "Hurt for hurt never helped anyone," is Bonnie Nelson's line against her.
4. Why must Bonnie work for Mr. Ribaldi?

Answer: Because her family is being evicted.

Mrs. Nelson receives a telegram saying that her family has been evicted. She goes to visit Mr. Ribaldi and he tells her that if her daughter "The one who sings", meaning Bonnie, will work for him every day they will never be without a place to live. Mrs. Nelson is reluctant to do so, not knowing that Ribaldi is actually an accomplished musician, because Ribaldi hid in the shadows and "was more like a beast than a man".
5. What is wrong with Porter, that Ribaldi fixes?

Answer: He stutters when he speaks.

Porter goes out for a walk on a night his parents are fighting and ends up at Ribaldi's Mansion. As Ribaldi and Porter talk, his stutter goes away. Other residents of Castle Gates' have their diseases, like broken legs, nearsightedness, and tumors, go away also. Ribaldi is the one who pays for them all, but in secret.
6. Finish the lyrics: "There is no curse or evil spell, that's worse than one we give ourselves. The power that will break this curse oh I know, all too well, is ________."

Answer: "locked within myself."

Ribaldi sings this song, "The Curse", to Bonnie after he tells her that she sings like a goat. She then tells him he has an ugly heart, but after he sings realizes that despite his ugly and deathlike face, he is still beautiful.
7. Who does Ribaldi teach to sing?

Answer: Bonnie

Ribaldi agrees to teach Bonnie to sing after he sings to her, and requests that she be invited to compete in the state solo competition. Bonnie is then told that she must choose between singing in the competition or working for Ribaldi.
8. Does Bonnie choose to stay with Ribaldi?

Answer: Yes

Bonnie does choose to stay, breaking the curse that Ribaldi has been under; "Only one of pure heart could break the evil spell." Bonnie showed Ribaldi compassion and love and taught him to do the same.
9. "Every person you have known, has a song of their own. Once they open up you'll hear what's there." What comes next?

Answer: "It's not easy you must listen, with your heart for what lies hidden."

Bonnie sings "The Melody Within" at the state solo finals and wins. During this time, Ribaldi is murdered by the town, after saving Georgie's life. It is then revealed to the town, after Ribaldi's mansion is ransacked, that he has been paying to heal the illnesses of the people in town.

While Bonnie took the time to hear what was inside Ribalsi's heart, the people of Castle Gate judged him by his ugliness, making themselves ugly as well.
10. After Ribaldi's funeral, Bonnie, Georgie, Porter, Timmy and Mrs. Nelson are walking past Rialdi's Mansion. Why does Bonnie go into the house?

Answer: She hears her song on the piano, "The Melody Within".

When Bonnie enter's Ribaldi's house, she finds a man who looks just like Ribaldi, but he is beautiful. This man is playing "The Melody Within" on the piano, then leaves. When outside he says that he is going home. Bonnie asks, "Where is home?" Rigoletto/Ribaldi replies "Far away..." and Bonnie finishes "So far away that I never knew it existed?" When asked his name, he says "Some people call me Rigoletto.

But then you don't believe that now, do you?"
