Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Sean Ryan's position when the camera closed in on him after the battle at Omaha Beach?

Answer: He was face-down

After the D-Day scene, the camera moved across the carnage and eventually zoomed in on a dead soldier. The soldier had the name Ryan. S printed on his backpack. He was one of the three brothers that was killed, which led to a search party for the fourth, James.
2. Cpl. Upham said he hadn't held a weapon since when?

Answer: Basic training

Corporal Upham was recruited by Capt. Miller because he could speak both French and German, and both of Miller's men were dead. Upham protested that he only translated and worked with maps, and that he hadn't held a weapon since Basic Training, but Miller took him anyway.
3. In the skirmish at Neuville, there was a French family living in what remained of their house. The man in the house wanted his family away where they would be safe, and proceeded to hand down which family member of his?

Answer: His Daughter

The family was living in a half-destroyed house. Caparzo decided to take the child down from the second floor, even though the entire squad protested, claiming it reminded him of his niece. The child was taken away, and Caparzo thoughtlessly moved backwards into the open, while trying to explain himself, where he was shot.
4. Caparzo was shot through the chest by a German sniper after standing out in the relative open. Jackson moved forward to find the sniper before he could shoot anyone else. The German sniper saw Jackson just as Jackson fired his shot. Where did that shot hit the German sniper?

Answer: The Eye

Caparzo died just when Jackson shot the German sniper. Caparzo had pulled out a letter had written to his father, asking for Fish to copy it and send it. The squad sent encouraging words, telling him that he'd live, but were unable to help because they would have been shot had they ventured out into the open.
5. In Neuville, the squad decided to stay for a while to rest up. In what building did they stay?

Answer: A Church

After the small skirmish in Neuville, the squad decided to catch up on a little sleep and dry off their cloths after being soaked in the rain. This was one of the quieter moments in the movie in which the characters are further developed, with stories about the lives of the individual squad members.
6. The pilot of the crashed glider said it was like trying to fly a freight train because of what?

Answer: There were steel plates welded onto the bottom to protect the passengers from the anti-air guns.

The pilot of the crashed glider explained that they had steel plates wielded onto the bottom to protect the on-board general, but neglected to tell the pilot until takeoff. The glider was too heavy and plummeted right after being released. Everyone died in the crash with the exception of the pilot.

There was a comment about how much people would do for one man, and the squad sympathized with him, given that their own mission was to find and retrieve Private Ryan.
7. How far did the squad tell the German P.O.W. to walk?

Answer: One Thousand Paces

At the German radar site, none of the squad members wanted to take the risk, but Captain Miller felt it was his duty to not leave the burden for the next squad that came along. In the raid, the squad lost their second member, T/4 medic Wade. There was only one surviving German, whom the squad abused liberally in their grief.

After burying the dead soldiers, most of the squad wanted to execute the German P.O.W., but Upham convinced Miller to do the decent, humane thing to do, which was to let the P.O.W. go.

They blindfolded him and told him to walk 1000 paces in the direction they pointed. Once he had done that, he was to turn himself into the next Allied patrol he came across.
8. Does the squad ever encounter British forces in their search for Pvt. Ryan?

Answer: No

The only two factions you see in this movie are American and German. Canadian and British forces would still have been recovering and formulating their own plans after their respective D-Day landings.
9. When the squad finally found Ryan, what weapon was he holding?

Answer: A Bazooka

The squad was walking through a grassy field when a German half track came out. It was blown up soon after it appeared, and the squad saw its three hidden allies after securing the area. Private James Ryan was the one holding a bazooka when he stood up in the tall grass. This was the first time the squad saw who it was that they were trying to save.
10. Who said, "Saving Private Ryan"?

Answer: Sgt. Horvath

After Private Ryan refused to abandon his post at the bridge at Ramelle with his squad, Captain Miller and Sergeant Horvath walked away from the crowd to discuss how they were going to incorporate this change of events into their plans, as they both agreed with Ryan when he asked why he should be so privileged to go home when all the men around him had fought just as diligently. Miller asked Horvath what he thought they should do. Horvath explained that there were two ways he could see.

They could either leave Ryan at the village and go home, or they could stay, and hope to make it through the mess they'd gotten into, and that "someday they might look back and decide that saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing they were able to pull out the whole God-awful mess."
11. Capt. Miller said he wanted Pvt. Jackson, the sniper, up in the bell tower, and then asked if he wanted any company up there. What did Jackson request?

Answer: A 30 caliber machine gun

Miller was formulating his plan to counter the German offensive that was sure to come. The first thing he did was ask Jackson to be up in the bell tower. Jackson asked for a 30 caliber machine gun with about 1000 rounds. The bell tower is where Jackson and Parker, the soldier operating the 30 cal., met their demise when a German tank blew apart the top of the tower.
12. After he was helped across the bridge, and shot a few times, what did Sgt. Horvath say?

Answer: "I'm fine, just got the wind knocked out of me."

Horvath had a tough time in the battle of Ramelle. He took out multiple Germans, including armored vehicles, as well as saving the lives of many Americans, most notably, Upham. He ran out of ammo and even resorted to throwing his helmet to beat the Germans back.

He was shot many times, in the leg, back, side, etc. but continued to fight the pain and Germans. He actually made it behind the barricades on the other side of the bridge, and merely said, "I'm fine, just got the wind knocked out of me," when Miller asked if he was alright.

He soon died afterwards.
13. What was the codename of the fallback point on the bridge, with the detonator?

Answer: The Alamo

The Alamo was a small building with the detonator that would blow the bridge. They would hold the bridge for as long as possible, but if it couldn't't be helped, the last man across would just blow it. They were warned that the last man across would have to hustle, as it had a thirty second fuse.
14. How many Germans did Upham kill?

Answer: One

Corporal Upham only killed one German in the entire movie. Upham was the French and German translator for the squad, and had a certain sympathy for life, and disliked conflict, regardless of who was shooting and who was dying. That's why he vouched for the German P.O.W. back at the radar station.

When Upham saw that same German, who was originally supposed to turn himself into the Americans had really gone back to his own side, to fight again, he was furious that he had taken advantage of Upham's good will.

In his disgust, Upham killed the German, after he confirmed that it was the same soldier from the radar station. This particular German was the also the one who was responsible for killing Captain Miller, as he shot him last.
15. Did the Americans detonate the bridge?

Answer: No

Captain Miller was on his way to the fuse, to detonate the bridge, when he was shot. As the tanks were slowly moving across the bridge, Miller could only use a colt and fire uselessly at the approaching tank. However, halfway across the bridge, the tank itself blew up, and everyone looked up to see the P-51 airplanes coming in on bombing runs.

After the first wave of bombs, reinforcement infantry also showed up. The Germans retreated, and the Americans held the bridge intact. Miller died right after, his last words to Ryan being "Earn this."
