Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting at the trial... What color dress was Andy's wife wearing in the flashbacks? It was the same color as Andy's tie during the trial scenes with which the flashbacks were intercut.

Answer: Red

The dress and tie were both red. Intentional? I don't know, but it could have been intended to give a subtle visual tie between the two.
2. What was Andy drinking in the car on the night of his wife's death?

Answer: Bourbon

The prosecutor (whose manner of questioning should have been objected to a few times, in my opinion) listed the bourbon among the incriminating evidence during the trial.
3. Did Andy's tie change during the course of the trial?

Answer: Yes

When he was on the stand being questioned, the tie was red. When he was being sentenced, though, it was a patterned tie with red, black, and silvery white. I guess he wasn't being kept in jail during his trial. It was this last tie that he was wearing when he arrived at Shawshank.
4. What store does Red refer to himself as?

Answer: Sears and Roebuck

He says, 'That's me. A regular Sears and Roebuck' about his ability to get things from the outside and redistribute them inside the prison walls.
5. What was Red's first impression of Andy?

Answer: He thought a 'stiff breeze would blow him over'.

Red bet that Andy would be the first of his batch to break when the new fish arrived. He didn't expect him to last a single night.
6. What are the shape of the Warden's glasses when Andy arrives at Shawshank?

Answer: Circular

This can be clearly seen for the first time when the Warden explains the rules of the prison to the new fish, but they're visible at later points as well.
7. In what state do the new inmates get marched to their cells their first night?

Answer: Naked and carrying their clothes.

The men were naked and still covered with that white powder that they got doused in after their showers.
8. What is Red playing with when the lights go out on Andy's first night?

Answer: baseball

Baseball comes up later in the movie when Andy first approaches Red to inquire about the rock hammer. Could this be foreshadowing? If so, it's awfully subtle.
9. What does the head guard (Captain Hadley) not want to hear?

Answer: a mouse fart

After beating the fat fish, he warned the rest of the block that if they made any noise, they'd be spending time in the infirmary too.
10. What did Andy do his first night in prison?

Answer: He didn't make a sound.

He cost two packs of cigarettes because he was so silent.
11. Who is Jake?

Answer: Brooks' crow.

Jake is the crow that Brooks nurses back to health and raises. After he gets released from prison, he goes to feed the birds, hoping to see Jake, but never does. He figures that Jake, like himself, had become dependent on the institution and was unable to survive outside the prison walls.
12. What did Andy ask about the fish who'd been beaten the first night in prison by the head guard?

Answer: What was his name?

This was in the first cafeteria scene, but Heywood got mad at him for asking and Andy didn't pursue it further. Heywood probably felt guilty for capitalizing on the man's unfortunate fate, as he had bet on his breaking and had, in effect, brought the break about. I imagine he wanted to dehumanize him, and thus denied him the dignity name-recognition.
13. Every serious fan of this film knows about the flub as Red's throwing the baseball around in the yard - he catches it twice without throwing it out in between. What is Andy talking about at the time?

Answer: The rocks in the yard.

He's telling Red about the rocks he's finding in the yard: 'Quartz, mica, shale, limestone.'
14. How long does Red think it would take a man to tunnel under a wall with the rock hammer?

Answer: 600 years

Red says this when he finally gets the joke upon seeing the hammer. He thinks it was foolish to suspect that Andy would be using it to attempt an escape from the prison.
15. What season was it when they went to do the roof?

Answer: Spring

Red says that it was the spring of 1949. He recognizes this as a turning point in Andy's prison life.
16. What made Captain Hadley's brother rich?

Answer: oil wells

Hadley was complaining about how much the government was going to take away in taxes, so Andy went over to offer his advice on keeping all of the inherited $35,000.
17. The guard who thinks Hadley's inheritance is great started appearing on what TV show in 1997?

Answer: ER

Paul McCrane, the actor in question, plays that jerk of a doctor, Robert Romano. His other notable film work consists mostly of 1980's 'Fame', in which he had one of the main parts.
18. How many bottles of beer does Andy get for the men?

Answer: 3 for each

Andy told Captain Hadley that 'a man working outdoors feels more like a man if he can have a bottle of suds'. Because he was going to help Hadley evade taxes, Andy was able to persuade the man into procuring the alcohol for the workers. Red thought Andy did it just so he could feel normal for a few minutes.
19. Did Andy have any of the beer?

Answer: No

He said he gave up drinking. This was probably because the alcohol he'd been drinking on the night of his wife's death had contributed to his conviction.
20. What does Andy want to carve his chess pieces from?

Answer: Soapstone and alabaster

He tells Red this in the yard before Red tells Andy that he's in for murder and it 'the only guilty man in Shawshank'. We're not even halfway through the movie, so check out Part II (and maybe more) of this quiz!
