Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What day is Soylent Green day?

Answer: Tuesday

Tuesday was the only day people could receive their Soylent Green rations. Soylent Green was in short supply, and therefore many people in the ration queues did not manage to receive any Soylent Green at all. As a result, riots on Soylent Green day were not uncommon.
2. How did people power their lights?

Answer: Pedaled a bicycle to recharge their battery

In order to restore power when the lights dimmed, you had to pedal a bicycle to recharge a battery. This in turn powered the lights and any other electrical appliances you may have.
3. "Soylent Green" had an unusual method of explaining why current societal conditions existed. What method was used?

Answer: Scenes of overpopulation and pollution prior to displaying the movie's name and actors

The names of the movie and starring actors were preceded by scenes of overpopulation and pollution, which explained the problems society was facing in the year 2022. Although a further cause of environmental problems, namely a year round heat wave caused by the greenhouse effect, was also mentioned once the acting dialogue began, this greenhouse effect was undoubtedly caused by the pollution shown in the early scenes.
4. What were women designated as either a personal or building chattel called?

Answer: Furniture

Some women chose to become 'furniture' as it provided them with better food and shelter than the majority of the population. These women generally remained in service as long as they were wanted by the building tenant or their personal owner. Although they were sometimes mistreated, they were not slaves, and could choose to leave their employment.
5. Which colour of soylent product did not exist?

Answer: blue

Soylent Blue did not exist. Soylent Green was touted as the best product, because it was made from plankton and contained high energy products. It was also the newest Soylent product and in short supply.
6. What were people called who researched information to help law enforcement officers find and arrest criminals?

Answer: Police Books

'Police Books' researched and studied any available information pertinent to known crimes and criminals as requested by the police officer they were assigned to help. They often used 'The Exchange' to research information as 'The Exchange' was not only a valuable source of written information, but also provided a place to discuss and analyze information with other researchers.
7. When Detective Thorn was investigating the murder of Mr. Simonson, what did Detective Thorn take from Mr. Simonson's apartment?

Answer: Food, alcohol, soap, and a book

Except for the very rich, most people survived on a diet of water and soylent products. It is therefore not surprising that Detective Thorn stole items which he could not normally acquire. He also took a book that he gave to his 'police book', Sol, to research, hoping it would help determine why Mr. Simonson was killed.
8. What were the only reference books that Mr. Simonson had in his apartment?

Answer: Soylent Oceanagraphic Survey Report

Detective Thorn found a 'Soylent Oceanographic Survey Report' in Mr. Simonson's apartment and he gave this report to Sol for study, hoping it might shed some light on the reason for Mr. Simonson's murder. Reading this report had a serious psychological impact on Sol as he understood the implications of the report. If the survey report was correct, and the oceans and plankton were dying, then Soylent Green must be made of something else. Both Sol and the members of 'The Exchange' came to a rather disconcerting conclusion as to the ingredients of Soylent Green.
9. What special item did Shirl, who lived with Mr. Simonson, acquire at the market on the day of Mr. Simonson's death?

Answer: Beef

Shirl apparently had a good rapport with one of the market vendors. She reminded the vendor that he had promised to give her something special, and he obligingly gave her a small piece of beef.
10. What did Mr. Fielding, Mr. Simonson's personal bodyguard, say he believed was the cause of Mr. Simonson's death?

Answer: Stupid amateur burglary

Although Fielding said he considered Mr. Simonson's death attributable to a 'stupid amateur burglary', Detective Thorn was not convinced. Thorn could not help noticing that nothing had been stolen, the door lock had not been forced, the building scanners and alarms were out of order, and both Fielding and Shirl were away when the alleged break in occurred.
