The cast did not include Sid James - the stalwart of so many 'Carry On' films. The character of Charlie Sage was played by the late lamented Bob Monkhouse. The film script was written by Norman Hudis, adapted from the book 'The Bull Boys' by R.F. Delderfield. 1959 saw the release of the other named films, 'Constable', 'Nurse' and 'Teacher'.

Released in 1968 and set in British India, the 3rd Foot and Mouth Regiment (nicknamed the 'Devils in Skirts') dealt with the Burpa's Revolt. The film starred Sid James as Sir Sidney Ruff Diamond and Kenneth Williams as the Khasi of Kalabar.

Brooklyn-born Silvers made an appearance in 'Carry On Follow that Camel' in 1967, playing the part of Sergeant Knocker. The British singer Anita Harris also appeared as Corktip.

In this 1964 film, Senna Pod was the wife of Henghist Pod, played by Kenneth Connor. Joan Sims' role was that of Calpurnia; Amanda Barrie played the title role and Tanya Binning was Virginia. Warren Mitchell (Alf Garnett in 'Till Death Us Do Part') appeared as Spencius.

The screenplay was written by Talbot Rothwell from "an original idea by William Shakespeare". It was in this film that Kenneth Williams uttered the immortal 'Infamy, infamy - they've all got it in for me'.

Harry H Corbett is better known as Harold, the son of Albert Steptoe, the rag and bone men of Oil Drum Lane in the 1960-70s series 'Steptoe and Son'. Bernard Bresslaw appeared in 14 films of the 'Carry On' series; Terry Scott in seven, while Charlie Drake never had a role in any film of the series.

Bernard Cribbins appeared in only two other 'Carry On' films after 'Jack' in 1963 - as Harold Crump in 'Spying' 1964 and almost 30 years later as Mordecai Mendoza in the 1992 film 'Carry On Columbus'. Latterly he became famous for his 1960s hit records 'Hole in the Ground' and 'Right Said Fred' and for voiceovers in 'The Wombles' children's tv series.

In the 1974 film, the parts of Dick Turpin (aka Big Dick) and the Reverend Flasher were played by Sid James with Jack Douglas as Sergeant Jock Strapp. The slogan attached to this film was 'Dick Turpin Carries on with his Flintlock Cocked'.

Jon Pertwee, (the third 'Dr Who' after Hartnell and Troughton) had roles in the 'Carry On' films 'Cowboy', 'Screaming', 'Cleo' and 'Columbus'. William Hartnell (the first 'Dr.Who') appeared only in 'Carry On Sergeant' whilst Troughton and Davison played no parts in the films.
10. How many 'Carry On' films were made in the 1990s?

Answer: One

'Carry On Columbus' (1992) was the only one made in 1990s, with an all star cast including Alexei Sayle, Julian Clary, Martin Clunes and many others. Only five of the original regular cast appeared as, sadly, most of them had passed away.

Bill Maynard, famous for his portrayal of the conniving layabout Claude Jeremiah Greengrass in 'Heartbeat', played Guy Fawkes in this 1971 film. Sid James was Henry VIII; Hawtrey was Sir Roger de Lodgerley and Kenneth Connor played the character Lord Hampton of Wick.

The 'SS Happy Wanderer' was commanded by Captain Crowther (Sid James) and First Officer Major Banks (Kenneth Williams). This was the first 'Carry On' to be made in colour (1962).

The daffodil scene was comparable to some of the many truly hilarious moments of this series of films. Hattie Jacques played the formidable matron of Haven Hospital amongst a cast including Bill Owen (Compo in 'Last of the Summer Wine') and Joan Hickson (famous for her TV roles as Agatha Christie's Miss Marple) The set was located in the administration building of Pinewood Studios.
