Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 'Carry Ons' are a classic series of British comedy films. Who was the producer that first came up with the idea for 'Carry On'?

Answer: Peter Rogers

Peter Rogers hadn't planned a series of films but after the success of the first few he decided to stick with the winning formula. His other films include 'Appointment With Venus' and 'Time Lock', which starred a young Sean Connery.
2. What was the very first 'Carry On'?

Answer: Carry On Sergeant

Known later for game shows, the late, great Bob Monkhouse starred in this film. 'Carry On Sergeant' revolved around a new bunch of recruits assigned to Sergeant Grimshaw (William Hartnell). Grimshaw is retiring and takes a bet of £50 from a fellow officer that the recruits will be the first he's trained to be a champion platoon.
3. An actress synonymous with the films is Barbara Windsor. In which film did she make her first appearance playing the character Daphne Honeybutt?

Answer: Carry On Spying

'Carry On Spying' was a take on the new James Bond films of the Sixties. A secret formula has been stolen by the organisation STENCH. The inept agent Desmond Simpkins (Kenneth Williams) is assigned to retrieve it before it becomes too late. He has help (or help in the briefest sense) from three rookie agents, played by Charles Hawtrey, Bernard Cribbins and Barbara Windsor.
4. Due to illness, Sid James's part in 'Follow That Camel' had to be recast. Which famous American actor took over the role?

Answer: Phil Silvers

Sid was originally set to play Sgt Ernie Knocker, but fell ill during filming of his ITV comedy series 'George and the Dragon' so the part was offered to the American comedian and actor Phil Silvers. Silvers was a massive name in the '50s and '60s thanks largely to his role of Sergeant Bilko in the hugely popular 'Phil Silvers Show'. 'Carry On Follow That Camel' followed an Englishman (Jim Dale) enlisting in the French Foreign Legion after his reputation is unfairly tarnished back in England.
5. Known for the catchphrase 'Stop messing about', Kenneth Williams appeared in 26 of the 30 'Carry On' films. Which of these was he not in?

Answer: Carry On Up The Jungle

Kenneth Williams is another actor synonymous with 'Carry Ons'. With an instantly recognisable voice and his flaring nostrils, Williams had been offered two roles in this film but declined both. 'Carry On Up The Jungle' was set in Edwardian times and centred on an ornithologist's expedition to deepest, darkest Africa in search of the Oozlum bird and the many colourful characters that both accompany him and he meets there.
6. Harry H Corbett from the brilliant 'Steptoe and Son' had a lead in one film. Which of these was it?

Answer: Carry On Screaming

Known and loved for playing Harold Steptoe, Harry H Corbett played the delightfully named Sergeant Bung in this film. In Edwardian England young women are abducted by a huge monster called Oddbod and taken to a creepy house owned by a brother and sister. The women are turned into mannequins and sold to clothes shops. This 'Carry On' was a parody of the highly popular Hammer Horror films.
7. 'Carry On Henry' was a lavish and funny production about the life and loves of which English King Henry?

Answer: Henry VIII

Sid James took on the role of Henry VIII as he chopped and changed his wives with the click of his fingers.
8. A personal favourite of mine is 'Don't Lose Your Head'. In which period of history is this film set?

Answer: French Revolution

The search for the elusive Black Fingernail goes on here, a witty take on the Scarlet Pimpernel story. Wealthy aristocrats are saved from the guillotine by the cunning Black Fingernail (Sid James). Hot on his trail is the revolutionary leader Citizen Camembert (Kenneth Williams) and his assistant Citizen Bidet (Peter Butterworth).
9. Amanda Barrie plays the eponymous role in which film?

Answer: Carry On Cleo

'Carry On Cleo' takes us back to Roman times. Queen Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony all portrayed the 'Carry On' way. Cleopatra and Mark Antony (Sid James) hook up and overthrow Julius Caesar (Kenneth Williams) from power. Williams here utters the immortal line "Infamy, infamy. They've all got it in for me".
10. After a 14 year gap a new 'Carry On' was released in 1992. Featuring comedians of the time and hardly any originals, what was the name of this 'Carry On' film?

Answer: Carry On Columbus

Often seen as a poor imitation of the originals, 'Carry On Columbus' starred Julian Clary, Rik Mayall, Richard Wilson and Alexei Sayle among others. Two actors from the original series also starred - Jim Dale as Columbus and Leslie Phillips and King Ferdinand of Spain.

It centres on an expedition by Columbus to find an alternative route to the Far East funded by the King and Queen of Spain. However the Sultan of Turkey sets out to stop him.
