Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A military tale of marital interruptions and martial mix-ups.

Answer: Carry On Sergeant

Made in black and white in 1958, "Carry On Sergeant" was the first in the franchise.
It stars Bob Monkhouse as a young man who gets his call-up papers up for National Service on his wedding day.

Among those also at the training camp are Kenneth Connor, a seasoned and much complaining hypochondriac who could not believe the medical board had passed him fit.
In all, the squad are a bunch of misfits and the film follows the struggles of their sergeant, William Hartnell, to make something of them.
Oh and there is a sub plot to ensure that Bob Monkhouse spends his wedding night with his bride.
2. A tale of love requited and unrequited amid bedpans and sponge baths.

Answer: Carry On Nurse

Made in 1959, "Carry On Nurse" was the second in the series.
It stars Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor Charles Hawtrey, Hattie Jacques and Joan Sims, all of whom were to become regular cast members.

The movie is set in Haven Hospital, where Ted York (Terence Longdon) is rushed for appendicitis.
He falls for a nurse (played by Shirley Eaton) but her affections are for a doctor.
There is also a flickering relationship between Oliver Reckitt (Kenneth Williams) and a friend's sister, (played by Jill Ireland), but will they admit their love for each other?

With the matron, (Hattie Jacques), striking fear into the lives of everyone, the hospital descends into farce with patients planning their own operations on each other.
3. No passing on military nonsense, rank stupidity or kilted devils.

Answer: Carry On Up The Khyber

Released in 1968, "Carry On Up The Khyber" is set in India and is the story of a British Army regiment trying to keep the peace among restless and revolting locals.
No cliché of stiff upper lip English mannerism is left untold as the 3rd Foot and Mouth Regiment (The Devils in Skirts) try to keep peace near the Khyber Pass.
Did the soldiers wear anything under their kilts?, the locals wondered, and they found out at a key moment.

Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, Bernard Bresslaw and Peter Butterworth lead the cast, with newcomer Roy Castle as one half of the love interest.

The movie was made by the Rank organisation, which allowed Kenneth Williams, playing a local tribal prince, to remark "rank stupidity" when a servant banded a gong to announce dinner was ready. (Those of you familiar with movie trademarks will know that a man banging a large gong was used at the start of Rank's productions.)
4. Don't get wild, just go out and clean up the west. Nuts to those who get frightened by horses backfiring.

Answer: Carry On Cowboy

Made in 1965, "Carry On Cowboy" was the 11th in the series.
Franchise regular Sid James stars as 'the Rumpo Kid" who rides into Stodge City and guns down three strangers just for the heck of it then takes over the town saloon, after shooting dead the sheriff.

With the law authorities at their wit's end, they are delighted when Marshal P. Knutt walks into into their Washington D.C. office and offers to clean up the west. They think he is a law Marshal but he is an innocent sanitation engineer newly arrived from England and Marshal is his first name.

Lots more confusion follows and he is sent to Stodge City to confront the Rumpo Kid.
As well as Sid James, Jim Dale stars as Marshal P. Knutt, with other parts for Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Joan Sims.
5. Clasp that asp, don't drink the asses' milk, and choose between an emperor or two.

Answer: Carry On Cleo

Released in 1964, the story is set in the court of Cleopatra.
When Roman Emperor Julius Caesar (played by Kenneth Williams) arrives, he is accompanied by a Briton slave (Kenneth Connor) who had saved his life.
In the meantime, Mark Anthony (Sid James) arrives to plot against Cleopatra (Amanda Barrie) but falls in love with her.

More slapstick follows when Caesar is warned of a plot led by Cleopatra and Anthony. Caesar defeats the plotters and escapes to Rome where he lives happily ever after.
(No, not really: I am just testing whether you are paying attention.)

The film also produced what was once voted the best 'one liner' in British movie history. It comes when Kenneth Williams' Caesar is attacked by his bodyguards and utters the line: "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"
It was named the best one-liner in a poll of 1,000 comedians, movie people and film fans by Sky Movies Comedy in 2007.
6. Go see what a New World is coming to.

Answer: Carry On Columbus

Released in 1992, "Carry On Columbus" was the 31st in the franchise - and the first in 14 years.
If the hope was that coinciding with the 500th anniversary of the first voyage by Columbus could help reignite the franchise, that was to be dashed.
By 1992, the pick of the 'Carry On" regulars were gone or past their prime. New 'alternative' comedians who joined the cast did not spark.

Peter Gilmore and Jim Dale were the experienced hands, each appearing in their 11th "Carry On". Other regulars, including Joan Sims and Barbara Windsor, passed on starring roles.
The movie attempted to find comedic elements in the well-rehearsed story of Christopher Columbus attempting to find a new, profitable route westwards to the Indies.
7. Is that a dromedary I see before me, or have I got desert sand in my eye?

Answer: (Carry On) Follow That Camel

The "Carry On" franchise had largely been one for the British market, however the 14th outing saw an attempt to make inroads into the USA by featuring Phil Silvers in a leading role.
The film was released as simply "Follow That Camel", but was also known in the more familiar theme of "Carry On...Follow That Camel".

Set in the desert of North Africa, this is a pastiche of many familiar French Foreign Legion themes.
Peter Gilmore stars as an Englishman whose reputation is falsely ruined by a love rival and decides to join the Legion. After discovering what has happened, the young woman (Angela Douglas) decides to follow him but becomes part of a Sheik's harem.

Skirmishes between legionaries and the local people follow and a raid is launched to rescue the captive.
Phil Silvers' characterisation is a barely disguised imitation of the 'Sergeant Bilko' role that had made his name in the USA.
8. Don't drop a stitch when the peasants are revolting and the upper classes are coming apart, literally.

Answer: Carry On Don't Lose Your Head

For the 13th outing in the franchise, the producers turned to the French Revolution as the subject of "Carry On Don't Lose Your Head".
In particular, the movie parodies the novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel", with similar themes - aristocrats under threat of death from the new revolutionary populace being rescued by a mysterious hero, Sid James as "The Black Fingernail".
As well as Sid James, the movie brought out many other "Carry On" regulars, including Kenneth Williams, Jim Dale, Charles Hawtrey, Peter Gilmore and Joan Sims.
9. One marriage may be unfortunate but six is a regal carry on too far, surely.

Answer: Carry On Henry

With Sid James as King Henry VIII and Barbara Windsor as his little piece of fancy, the foundations were well placed for "Carry On Henry", the 21st in the series.
The plot will be well known to those familiar with the real-life story of King Henry VIII.
Sid James plays a king with a roving eye intent on his prize despite all the scheming of people at his court.
Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Barbara Windsor, Joan Sims, Kenneth Connor and Terry Scott all join in the action.
10. Tighten the guy ropes, straighten the ground sheets and beware of flying brassieres.

Answer: Carry On Camping

The "Carry On" franchise was always a bit risqué and near the knuckle, with double entendres of a dubious nature rife throughout the scripts.
The movies were intended, though, for a family audience, and "Carry On Camping" was one of the few in which any naked flesh was flashed. That was the now famous scene in which Barbara Windsor lost her brassiere during some strenuous exercise. (Don't worry, parents, it all happens so quickly that I doubt any of your little darlings will see it, let alone be shocked by it).

Made in 1969, this was the 17th in the series and is set, naturally, in a holiday campsite.

Sid James and Bernard Bresslaw play business partners who have the idea of taking their girlfriends to a nudist camp to see if they will shake off their inhibitions. Sadly for them the camp they choose is a regular site located in a wet and amenities-free farmer's field.

All that is left is for them to turn their attention to a group of lithesome young women from a finishing school.
As well as Sid James and Bernard Bresslaw, the movie stars Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey, Terry Scott and Hattie Jacques.
