Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The actor who plays the main character in the remake of "The Karate Kid" is the son of a famous rapper, TV star, and movie star. Name this actor who plays Dre.

Answer: Jaden Smith

Jaden is the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. In the movie he plays Dre, the son of a widowed single mother, Sherry (played by Taraji P. Henson). Her job forces her to move them to China, where most of the movie takes place.

Jaden's first acting job was opposite his father in "The Pursuit of Happyness", a biographical drama about the life of Chris Gardner. Will plays Chris, a single father struggling to keep his family from homelessness, and Jaden plays his son.
2. Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han, the new Mr. Miyagi, in the movie. What is his profession?

Answer: Maintenance man

Mr. Han is the maintenance man at the building where Dre and his mother move to in Beijing. He is distant at first but watches Dre and what is happening to him. Then one day when Dre is getting beat up by Cheng and his friends, he steps in and saves Dre. Later on we find out Mr. Han is tortured by memories of the loss of his wife and son in a car accident in which he was the driver.
3. The movie features what type of martial arts?

Answer: Kung Fu

Although the original movie is about karate, the remake is about kung fu. In the original, Mr. Miyagi is an Okinawan immigrant. Okinawa is where karate originated. In the remake Mr. Han was taught kung fu by his father, which he then teaches Dre. Kung fu comes from China where the movie is set. Jackie Chan thought the movie should have been called "The Kung Fu Kid" because of this.
4. What instrument does Mei Ying, the girl Dre likes, play?

Answer: Violin

Mei Ying plays the violin and is training for an audition to get into the Beijing Academy of Music. At one point Dre notes that the acronym for the school spells BAM, like a sound effect from a comic. The joke is lost on Mei, who does not understand.
5. When they are on the train to the Wudang Mountains, Mr. Han tells Dre they are going somewhere to learn about the life-force that flows through all things. What is the name of this force?

Answer: Chi

On the train Dre asks, "So, what are we learning today?"

Mr. Han replies, "Chi, internal energy, the essence of life. It moves inside of us, flows through our bodies, gives us power from within."

When they arrive they journey to the top of the mountain to drink from the Dragon Well. While there Dre sees a woman who is a kung fu practitioner (Michelle Yeoh of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame in an uncredited cameo) dancing with a cobra. Mr. Han explains it is the snake dancing with her because of her Chi, not the other way around.
6. Dre refers to a movie to explain what the life-force Mr. Han tells him about is like. What movie does he reference?

Answer: Star Wars

Dre thinks of "Star Wars" when Mr. Han tells him about Chi. In "Star Wars", Luke must learn to master the Force. As Dre notes, he is like a Jedi and Mr. Han is like Yoda, the Jedi Grand Master. The Chinese concept of Chi and George Lucas' concept of 'the Force' do share many similar characteristics.
7. Dre and Mei Ying meet at the Qixi Festival to see the shadow theater. According to Mr. Han, what Western holiday does the Qixi Festival most closely resemble?

Answer: Valentine's Day

Mr. Han states that the Qixi Festival is much like Valentine's Day. When Dre and Mei Ying meet at the shadow theater, she tells him the story of the lovers separated except for one day a year. Dre then tells her what it means to pinky swear and they both agree to be at each other's event - her audition and his tournament.

In the end they kiss and their kiss is projected onto the shadow screen.
8. The movie takes place mainly in China. In which city does most of the action take place?

Answer: Beijing

Dre and his mom move to Beijing. The Olympic village is pointed out to Dre because he once states that everything in China is old. His class also takes a field trip to the Forbidden City, the home of the Chinese Emperors. The movie was filmed on location in China.
9. The evil instructor of the martial arts academy teaches his students three things. Of the following, which is NOT one of them?

Answer: No crying

Master Li is the evil instructor who teaches his pupils, "No weakness! No pain! No mercy!" When Mr. Han takes Dre back to the academy to try to make peace with Cheng and his crew, Master Li will have none of it. He says either Dre or Mr. Han fights before they can leave. Mr. Han offers a solution by saying Dre will fight in the upcoming kung fu tournament but the bullies, Master Li's students, must leave Dre alone to train. Master Li agrees and so Mr. Han now must teach Dre kung fu, something he was unwilling to do earlier.

Yu Rongguang plays Master Li. He is a Chinese actor and martial artist who started his career in Hong Kong, like Jackie Chan, and has appeared in numerous Chan films.
10. What is the name of the team that Dre's nemesis, Cheng, belongs to from Master Li's martial arts academy?

Answer: Fighting Dragons

The Fighting Dragons are a formidable force at the tournament. Two members of the team make it to the semifinals along with Dre. Cheng wins his semifinal so Dre needs to defeat two Dragons in order to win. Master Li tells the first Dragon to injure Dre to knock him out of the tournament, which he reluctantly does.

He is disqualified but Dre is hurt too badly to continue. Mr. Han works his magic with the cupping and Dre is able to continue to fight Cheng in the finals. Again Master Li orders Cheng to injure Dre instead of fighting fair.

Although badly injured, Dre overcomes the odds and defeats Cheng. At the end of the movie all of the Fighting Dragons come over and bow to Mr. Han in respect for what he taught Dre.
