Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The novella that the movie was based one was released in 1981 as part of a collection of short novels. Who was the author?

Answer: Stephen King

King released the story in the book 'Different Seasons' in 1981. Interestingly, of the four stories in the book, three movies have been made from them: 'The Shawshank Redemption', 'Stand By Me' (based on 'The Body'), and 'Apt Pupil'.
2. 'The Shawshank Redemption' was not the official title of the novella. Which of the answers below were NOT a part of the story's title or subtitle?

Answer: An Innocent Man

The official title was: 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption'. 'Hope Springs Eternal' was the subtitle (given on the first page of script).
3. In the movie, the character of Red was played by Morgan Freeman. Based on the physical description that Red is given in the book, who would have been a better choice (appearance-wise) to play Red?

Answer: David Caruso

In the book (which was written in the first person), Red's description of himself is as a red-haired white man. The name 'Ellis Redding' was created solely for the movie, to have a reason to call the character 'Red'. Not that Freeman wasn't perfect in the role, because he definitely was.
4. Mr. Hadley was the captain of the guards at Shawshank prison. What was his first name?

Answer: Byron

When tarring the roof and listening to Hadley describe the taxes he'd have to pay on his inheritance, Heywood is heard to say, 'Poor Byron. Terrible luck ...'
5. Which of the following does Warden Norton NOT say to the new inmates?

Answer: You eat when we say you eat

It was actually Byron Hadley, the captain of the guards, who says the 'You eat when we say you eat,' line.
6. When a prisoner breaks down crying at Heywood's prompting on Andy's first night, which of the following phrases does he NOT say in his defense?

Answer: I didn't do anything wrong

Guard Hadley is not very sympathetic, to say the least. He beats the convict to death with a nightstick.
7. After Andy describes the rock hammer to Red in an attempt to procure one, Red asks Andy if he might want to plant it in someone's skull. Complete Andy's reply: 'No, I ____ __ _______ ____.' ?

Answer: have no enemies here

After hearing Andy say he has no enemies, Red replies, 'Yeah? Wait a while ...'
8. When Bogs and his cronies attack Andy in the projector room, Andy manages to break one of his attackers' noses. What was the name of the man whose nose he broke?

Answer: Rooster

After getting Andy on his knees and telling him what he was going to force him to do, Bogs said, 'And after you swallow mine, you're gonna swallow Rooster's. You done broke his nose and he ought to have something to show for it.'
9. After saving Hadley from paying taxes on his inheritance, Andy is assigned to work in the library rather than the laundry. After seeing that it was a pretty easy job, he asked Brooks how long he'd been the librarian. What was his answer?

Answer: Since 1912

Brooks' reply was, 'I came here in ought-five and they made me librarian in 19 and 12.'
10. Jake was Brooks' pet, which he'd had since just before Andy arrived at the prison. Where did Jake fall out of his nest?

Answer: By the plate shop

Brooks tells Andy that he fell out of a nest by the plate shop after Andy gives him the worm he found in his food. We see Jake again on Andy's first day in the library.
11. Andy began sending weekly letters to attempt to increase the funding of the prison's library. How long did it take until he got a response?

Answer: Six years

As Andy told the guard, 'It only took six years. From now on I'll write two letters a week instead of one.'
12. After Bogs and his buddies beat Andy in the projector room, Bogs did a week in the hole. When the guards let him out, one guard said, 'Time's up Bogs.' Complete Bogs' reply: 'It's ____ _____, boss.'

Answer: your world

Bogs is very contrite to those in authority, and full of bluff and bluster when dealing with anyone weaker than him, just like any typical bully. Luckily for Andy, when Bogs gets back to his cell the guards show him just how tough he really is.
13. After Brooks is released after 50 years in Shawshank, he tries to get along on the outside but finds he can't. In one of the most emotional moments in the movie he hangs himself in his room after carving a few words into the wall. What did Brooks carve in the wall?

Answer: Brooks was here

Many long time convicts can't manage on the outside, and suicides are fairly common, as well as deliberately violating parole to get back in jail. This scene is so realistic, and its implications so sad, that it's difficult to watch it without learning some real sympathy for anyone in that position.
14. After Andy takes over as the head librarian he starts to do all of the tax returns for the guards and the warden. Eventually he also does them for guards at other prisons. In one scene, a visiting guard wearing a baseball uniform tells Andy about items he'd had to buy as a part of his job, and Andy tells him that they are tax deductible. What were the items?

Answer: Gun and holster

This guard must have been pretty dumb to not know he could write that stuff off. Well, Andy's nice enough to point it out for him. 'Hey Red, can you hand me a stack of 1040s?'
15. The success of the movie depended greatly on its following the book almost exactly, even down to the majority of the dialogue. However, there is one significant scene in the movie that was not in the book at all. Which scene was it?

Answer: Andy playing the opera over the PA system

Nowhere in King's story is the opera incident mentioned. Brooks is a far less prominent character in the novella, though his release is mentioned and the fact that he died shortly thereafter (nothing is said about how he died). Tommy's story about Elmo Blatch is the same, though in the book he's named Elwood Blatch. Finally, Andy's trial is given a fairly detailed analysis, despite the fact that the narrator (Red) was not present.
16. There is one other item that is significantly different in the movie than in the book. In order to prevent Tommy from telling anyone about Andy's innocence, the warden has Tommy killed in the movie. How did he insure Tommy's silence in the book?

Answer: Tommy is transferred to a minimum security prison

King's story has Tommy transferred to a 'country-club' prison in exchange for his silence.
17. Andy's escape in the movie is almost word for word how it happened in the book. One point that is different is the girl in the poster on the wall. In the movie it was Raquel Welch. Who was the girl in the poster in the book?

Answer: Linda Ronstadt

In the novella, Welch was one of his previous girls, but she got worn out and Andy replaced her with Ronstadt. Also different in the book was the fact that Andy did not escape until the mid 1970s, well after the Tommy Williams incident.
18. When Andy tells Red about Randall Stevens, the fictional man with the bank accounts in case of an IRS audit, Red likens Andy to an artist. Which artist does he describe Andy as?

Answer: Rembrandt

Red tells him he's a Rembrandt. Of course, if he was a Picasso he'd have three heads ...
19. The day before Andy escapes he tells Red about the piece of black volcanic glass in the hay field. What town does he tell Red this field is in?

Answer: Buxton

This was his way of getting Red to find his message if he ever got out, without telling him enough to risk anyone knowing his plans.
20. On the morning of his escape, Andy's friends think he is contemplating suicide. Heywood remembers that Andy came down to the docks and got a length of rope a short time ago. How long did he say the rope was?

Answer: Six feet

He said the piece of rope was six feet long. They become convinced that due to Andy's erratic behavior and the rope, he is going to hang himself in his cell that night.
21. When Red receives a blank postcard from a small town in Texas, he knows that it's a message from Andy telling him where he crossed the border into Mexico. What was the name of the town?

Answer: Fort Hancock

Fort Hancock is just outside of El Paso. In the novella, Andy crossed the border at McNary, Texas.
22. When Red decides to violate his parole and follow Andy down to Mexico, what does he carve on the wall under Brooks' final words?

Answer: So was Red

Under 'Brooks was here' he carves 'So was Red'.
23. When Red meets his old friend Andy on the beach in Zihuatenejo, which of the articles of clothing mentioned below is he wearing?

Answer: Tie

Red has taken off his shoes, and is carrying it and his jacket. Just before he gets to Andy the wind blows off his hat. Therefore, of the articles of clothing listed, the only one he's wearing is his tie.
24. 'The Shawshank Redemption' was nominated for 7 Oscars. How many did it win?

Answer: 0

It did not win any of the 7 Oscars it was nominated for. 'The Shawshank Redemption' was unlucky enough to be released the same year as two other all-time classics, 'Forrest Gump' and 'Pulp Fiction'. Those two movies carried away most of the trophies that 'Shawshank' was nominated for.
25. In both the book and the movie, the entire last soliloquy was identical, and equally moving. What are the last two words of the movie, and of the book?

Answer: I hope

'I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.'
